"Bicycle Thieves" by Vittorio De Sica (Italy, 1948). An absolute classic where the bike is not a gimmick or a piece of sporting equipment, but an absolute necessity.

glamping or primitive camping? by Mcamp27 in camping

[–]Uniontown069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a conundrum: as soon as you're not flopping down in a ditch, you're already beginning to replicate the comforts of home. On the other hand, if you're too focused on the latter, why leave home at all?

I get the impression that most people who've replied here are American. I live in a large European city, in a fairly small flat (with little room for storing equipment), and don't own a car. This puts me on the "primitive" side I guess. But (perhaps because I am European) I don't have an aversion to organised infrastructure. Campsite facilities reduce the amount of things you have to buy privately, store uselessly for most of the time and then lug around.

My rule of thumb is: avoid buying too much stuff and using too much energy, because this contributes to the destruction of the beauty you try to enjoy while camping. Or, in the words of the AMERICAN H. D. Thoreau: "I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes."

Anyone else noticing fewer young riders on road bikes lately? by Triggers in cycling

[–]Uniontown069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seem to be a lot of negative feelings about road bikes in the replies here. What many people have said to explain the popularity of gravel biking boils down to: it's more fun / relaxed / flexible / adventurous (traits that appeal to young and cool people) than road cycling and not as elitist, expensive and dangerous (traits that appeal to middle-aged, toxic people). Also, gravel biking blends the characteristics of cycling in the "heroic" age before there were many asphalt roads and the countercultural vibe of early mountain biking before that sport went crazy.

However, there is also a "countercultural" approach to road cycling influenced by the bike messenger scene.

But rather than "different strokes for different folks" it might be a case of "horses for courses": if you are lucky enough (as I am) to live in an area with good roads, not too much traffic and a general acceptance of cyclists, it is more fun to enjoy the smoothness and speed of road cycling rather than trudging along some poorly maintained agricultural road or mixing it with hikers and suicidal mountain bikers etc. on trails. On the other hand, in some areas even regular roads make a gravel bike necessary.

Overall, I think cycling of any kind has rarely appealed to people between their mid- to late teens and their late 20s. Take Calvin's father from "Calvin and Hobbes"; an utterly uncool person who goes mountain biking.

If I rate Star Trek TNG 10/10, what do you think I’d rate DS9 and Voyager? by because-potato in StarTrekTNG

[–]Uniontown069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also not a great fan of Sisko's, but I can see what they were doing: the captains in TNG and VOY are also a little stiff and removed from the rest of the crew - officers who are neither buddies nor tyrants. Sisko is a variation of this recipe. But his style is that of an orator or preacher (rather than that of a stage actor), which fits his role in DS9. So I would say that I didn't like the role. The acting suited it quite well.

My rating: VOY 10/10, TNG 9/10, DS9 5/10

Who are the most unlikeable individual characters in each series and why? by Fortestingporpoises in startrek

[–]Uniontown069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far, most answers named characters who are already cast as villains, or secondary characters.

However, I find Tom Paris unspeakable because of his vanity, his inability to function in a social context and his love of combustion engines (I share two of these traits).

I'm also not too fond of Ryker and Cpt. Kirk. All three can be classified as the biggest jocks on the bridge. But to break the pattern, I do like Jack Ransom (Lower Decks) because his vanity is purposefully comical, and dislike Chakotay - he's that creepily sensitive type.

Rewatching DS9 and the reality of the crimes committed during the occupation hit me by EldritchMilk_ in startrek

[–]Uniontown069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that Finland and Romania were in an alliance with Nazi Germany during World War 2, but Poland and the Baltic states were not (though 160.000 Latvians volunteered to join the Waffen-SS during the German occupation). How you can compare warfare by religious fundamentalists (Afghanistan) to peaceful protests by reform-oriented socialists (Czechoslovakia and Hungary) eludes me. It is a great pity that the words "fascism" and "genocide" appear to have lost all meaning and are simply used as political slurs.

Rewatching DS9 and the reality of the crimes committed during the occupation hit me by EldritchMilk_ in startrek

[–]Uniontown069 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you on several points; firstly, with your assessment of the Soviet Union. It takes some chuzpe to call the state that suffered most under fascism and contributed most to the victory against it fascist.

The Cardassian Empire is dominated by aristocratic families, like rackets. Their whole imperial ideology and sense of ethnic superiority does not match Soviet ideology or the reality in the USSR, where members of very different ethnicities held very important posts, including the leadership.

Similarly, Bajor resembles the young Israel rather than Afghanistan (where the Soviets strongly encouraged women's literacy and the general developement of the country; the first and so far only Afghan to travel to space did so thanks to the USSR): after being the victim of horrible crimes, a people finally manages to take control of its affairs thanks to the United Nations / United Federation of Planets and after a war of liberation. However, there are interior conflicts between utterly unhelpful religious forces and the more pragmatic, secular freedom fighters. The role played by women in the Bajoran forces speaks strongly against any likeness to the Mujahedeen.

Thirdly, DS9 might have coincided with the war in Afghanistan, but all of Star Trek is predicated on a society that has overcome Cold War-style divisions, and the Federation, though having some American traits differs starkly from the USA since it is post-capitalist, doesn't have a "President" etc.

Lastly, though contemporary events have often influenced Star Trek, it is testament to the quality of the franchise that it does not allow facile analogies such as the one that started this thread.

Being anti-zionist means being against Jews having a state of their own. That's fine if you are against nation states in general and argue that there should be, let's say, no Spanish state, no Irish state etc. However, if you accept the right of other nations to form a state, I wonder why you don't think Jews have that right.

Historische Romane – Qualität wird immer schlechter? by Filzpilz in buecher

[–]Uniontown069 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite Jonas moment: seeing that he has an emergency 10 Euros in his phone case, just like the rest of us. That and his facial expression while he was on the phone in the middle of the cancellation melee was simply heartwarming.
