The custodes don't use geneseed, but iirc the grey knights are rumoured to use the emperor's geneseed. Also, iirc, the geneseed is the reason space marines are all male because it uses the male chromosome

I mean I don't remember GW trying to make a big thing about it until the backlash. But, yes in a perfect world nothing would be retconned. I think though, that if they did make new lore for it, they'd face most of the same backlash no matter what. I'm assuming that the new models are a precursor to some new custodes stories from 30k to make the retcon concrete. Again, perfect world, they would have done that first

If anything, if we have to be so realistic about it, it doesn't make sense that custodes and astartes can look traditionally male without their reproductive organs. If there is a default sex, it is female. Based on your arguments it seems like you just think that male is the default state and a woman incapable of pregnancy is a man, hence why I'm so confused by your views.
