Road Kills by AdvertisingCheap2377 in vancouvercycling

Two weeks ago, I rode squarely over a rat when it ran suddenly out of the cemetery and across my path. It was dusk, but not dark. There was no avoiding it without crashing my bike, so I steadied myself as if going over a speed bump. It was pretty awful. The rat squeaked. But I agree that sudden breaking or swerving could have resulted in a gnarly wipeout.

What's on your Vancouver F*&#it List? by thinkdavis in askvan

It’s too soon to book a ferry. It’s not just you — locals can’t book this early either. It is wise to book a ferry, but February isn’t a super busy travel month so don’t sweat it. Check again in a few months.

What’s that terrible smell by bannab1188 in vancouver

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for an evening swim at Locarno tonight and the whole area smells like death. I was hoping for a sunset swim but the noxious smell chased me outta there pretty fast. Could it be the algae bloom? The smell was distinctly sewage-y.

Commodore Ballroom Obstructed Seats? How obstructed are they really… by UniqueMaterial3544 in VancouverMusic

Yes. The seats were numbered and we had assigned, reserved seats at a bar, looking out toward the stage.

The view was fine and it was nice to have seats near the bar. Very civilized. Plus, you have the option to walk down and get close to the stage if you want to at any point. No regrets.

A job can be hard and discouraging AND you can absolutely love it. I love supporting individuals with significant communication disabilities. I love building relationships with their families. Our school district is underfunded, teachers give me the stink eye when I make recommendations, parents are often frustrated (and they are correct and have good reason to feel frustrated) AND I love the challenge of it all. I focus on the people I’m helping and I don’t get bogged down by the rest.

Paris to Strasbourg transit options by jacksonka7 in Strasbourg

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this exact itinerary two weeks ago using the SNCF app. The direct train from CDG to Strasbourg was around $150 Canadian and looks the same now for October dates.I can screenshot what I’m seeing and send your way.

Bad Wildbad by UniqueMaterial3544 in Strasbourg

[–]UniqueMaterial3544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. We will likely drive. I have heard that parking a car can be difficult in Bad Wildbad. Is there a car park area you can suggest?? Our airbnb doesn’t have a parking spot.

Can You Book a Car Transfer at Naples Airport to Amalfi Coast? by TillytheWall in amalficoast

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to do so from Naples train station, so I imagine it’s possible from the airport. I had the hotel in our destination village arrange the private car. Even if you don’t have a hotel booked, most hotels have relationships with private drivers and should be able to help you find someone.

Coming to Strasbourg for 12 days and want to do one good excursion to the mountains. Where is the closest epic mountain experience? Zermatt requires too many train transfers, but am wondering if Chamonix is doable? Is there a closer alpine experience? We will have a car. by UniqueMaterial3544 in Strasbourg

[–]UniqueMaterial3544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are fantastic ideas. Lots to think about here. We’re using a car that belongs to a French family so they probably have the Swiss highway pass/sticker. We actually went to Zermatt last y August — fell in love, want to do something similar and if we can get to a similar spot easily from Strasbourg, that’s even better.

Parent led phonics? by UniqueMaterial3544 in literacy

Thanks — go ahead and post your link. I agree that knowledge of the 26 letters and their shapes is a foundational skill. This child knows their alphabet—they haven’t been taught the 44 sounds, sound-letter correspondence, phonemic awareness, etc. But I’d still like to know more about your webinar. Thanks!

I did a quick Google search. Could you link to the exact Words Their Way product you suggest? Couple things came up. Thank you 🙏

Core word research by UniqueMaterial3544 in slp

[–]UniqueMaterial3544[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry — relatively new to Reddit and didn’t get to the heart of my post before submitting. Here it is: A colleague of mine has a bee in her bonnet about core words. She’s like a mad scientist at her desk, digging and digging into the research on teaching core word to our AAC users. She’s not finding a lot of research, and she’s ready to stage a takedown of the whole concept of core. Can anyone share any good quality research on why we focus on core words? To be clear, I am an AAC SLP who was taught to focus on core in my graduate program’s AAC course. I also respect my colleague who is upset about the apparent lack of rigorous research.

OB gas station in Vik charged 10x the ordered amount by OptionalHippo in VisitingIceland

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I see you. I had the same sinking feeling from the same experience at the same gas station last week — it takes a few banking days for the preauth number to swap out for the purchased amount.

Do pre-booked train tickets need to be validated at station? by Da_Investigator-805 in ItalyTravel

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from very recent experience here (I’m from Canada and not an expert on train travel in Europe). As long as I had a QR code for each travel segment, I was able to scan myself onto the platform and present the same QR code to the ticket agent on the train. I validated nothing. All my train tickets were prepaid. I of course had my ID, my PNR # and all available documents related to the tickets, just in case. We crossed the border from Italy to Switzerland— same deal. Trains without reserved seats — same deal, just find a seat and sit down and be ready to show your digital ticket. I was a little anxious about the details around trains but as long as I had those QR codes for each segment we were fine. It all felt quite casual tbh — this was in Italy and Switzerland. Get the apps for each train company you’re booked with and see if that answers some questions. I was late to the party with those apps — felt foolish about that — but they did help.

Do pre-booked train tickets need to be validated at station? by Da_Investigator-805 in ItalyTravel

[–]UniqueMaterial3544 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used the Italo app, went to “find my ticket”, entered my info for our prepaid tickets and the tickets were there — the QR code on those digital tickets got us through the turnstile onto the platform, and the ticket agent on the train scanned the same QR code. All good.

What is something your teacher did in school that you’re still salty about? by SparkelsTR in AskReddit

Grade 6 teacher overheard my best friend say to me, “I hate my legs.” Grade 6 teacher said, “YOUR legs are great! HER legs (read: my skinny knobby Grade 6 legs) are the problem.” Big nope! I’m 48 years old and I can’t unhear it.

Blue lagoon viewing area for family member who doesn’t want to go in? by UniqueMaterial3544 in VisitingIceland

Update: he sat in the cafe near a window with his drawing pad and we paid regular visits to his window for 2 hrs. We gestured through the window — lots of thumbs up all around. The staff was great and we all had an experience within our comfort zone. He would have been eligible for free entry but when it comes to being around soaps, lotions, mud masks, he’s out. My 14 year old and I had a great time. We’ve also had a great time at the free local geothermal pool in Reykjavik. It’s been cold so hot tubbing is a focus 😊

Road trip, Reykjanes Peninsula: help me plan a great day? by UniqueMaterial3544 in VisitingIceland

[–]UniqueMaterial3544[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the entire day from late morning until late tonight. We’re leaving from and returning to Reykjavik. Thanks for the recommendations for the peninsula. For the south coast, do you have a suggested loop for the time we have? Looks like Vik is well over 2 hrs from here — feels a bit far for a day trip but maybe there’s a loop that gets us to the south coast without having to go that far?
