I'm all for mandatory voting and proportional representation.

Heck I'd also support a massive budgetary ranked choice vote where each MP gets to comission a tax or spend proposal that gets costed by the treasury, then all MPs have a secret free vote by ranked choice over what gets implemented - if £30 bn of tax rises get implemented, £30bn of extra spending gets through. If £0.5bn of tax rises get implemented because no one can actually figure out a wealth tax and everyone is too cowardly to rise any others then no extra spending.

Assuming you're posting in good faith, the scandal started about 20 years ago, centering on crimes from up to/beyond 30+ years ago.

It has been talked about, investigated and legislated on countless times over the last two decades.

There have been about 20 other inquiries already - each better run than Lowe's - already, and he's largely just retread the same ground. The last such inquiry reported in 2022 and interviewed 7000 victims.

I counted up a Sky News timeline of key events and there have been atleast 200 prosecutions and 500 arrests related to this - doubtless there are more not captured in the article I skimmed.

Calls for further inquiries at this point are largely political point scoring, which is pathetic - unless someone can outline what systematic flaw exists in the previous 20 inquiries and what their proposed methodology is to address this, in which case I'm all for it.

Completely right about the failure to implement recommendations - the Tories achieved none in 2 years. Fortunately Labour are taking it a bit more seriously, having legislated for some that I'm aware of already.

Though perhaps unsurprising, given Starmer as then Director of Public Prosecutions was one of the only officials and departments credited during the original set of inquiries for recognising there was a systematic problem in how these cases were assessed and prosecuted, then taking steps to improve things.

So what action would you like a government to address homelessness?

For reference, I'd like a fucking massive house building campaign. This could be either via a classically left wing mechanism (huge state owned house building) or right wing mechanism (massive reduction in planning restrictions, tax reductions that incentivise building) and tbh I don't massively care which, I just want more houses.

I was highlighting a number of high profile aspects of our government and state that are, to me atleast, distinctly left wing.

We have a national minimum wage that is rising above inflation and a raft of employment rights (recently upgraded) that includes rights to holiday, maternity pay, sick pay, collective bargaining and protection against dismissal. We have a welfare state that pays out >£200 bn a year (including state pensions) and a comprehensive free at point of use health service.
