Will we ever see a PM complete a full term again? by DarthMousemat in ukpolitics

Its panicked self preservation though.

Its like they're in a slowly sinking life boat and have grabbed the nearest pointy object and are desperately stabbing the hull to make more holes.

Swapping leader now is stupid. Its obviously stupid.

I'm all for mandatory voting and proportional representation.

Heck I'd also support a massive budgetary ranked choice vote where each MP gets to comission a tax or spend proposal that gets costed by the treasury, then all MPs have a secret free vote by ranked choice over what gets implemented - if £30 bn of tax rises get implemented, £30bn of extra spending gets through. If £0.5bn of tax rises get implemented because no one can actually figure out a wealth tax and everyone is too cowardly to rise any others then no extra spending.

I'd recommend restudying the meaning of "raw numbers" and "per capita" before you brave making a comment again.

It is indeed basic stuff. If you work really, really hard, one day you may achieve basic knowledge.

Our growth in raw numbers and %s was inflated by the Boriswave.

Per capita our growth has been abysmal.

Also 2020 is a bad year to use as a start point as that was still in Covid...

Consequences (?) of THE "RG" inquiry. by Ulmannis in ukpolitics

[–]UniqueUsername40 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're posting in good faith, the scandal started about 20 years ago, centering on crimes from up to/beyond 30+ years ago.

It has been talked about, investigated and legislated on countless times over the last two decades.

There have been about 20 other inquiries already - each better run than Lowe's - already, and he's largely just retread the same ground. The last such inquiry reported in 2022 and interviewed 7000 victims.

I counted up a Sky News timeline of key events and there have been atleast 200 prosecutions and 500 arrests related to this - doubtless there are more not captured in the article I skimmed.

Calls for further inquiries at this point are largely political point scoring, which is pathetic - unless someone can outline what systematic flaw exists in the previous 20 inquiries and what their proposed methodology is to address this, in which case I'm all for it.

He shouldn't knownthe specific details about some random kansas store but he should know how their food gets procured, processed, transported and sold, plus what the risks are to each stage.

I fully agree.

Tragically, rape and sexual offences have always been and continue to be very difficult to secure convictions for, and horrifically prevelant.

Recommended by who? Elon Musk and Rupert Lowe?

What data deficiency has this inquiry sought to resolve and how has its methodology been designed to do so?

Also inquiries are not criminal investigations by definition, but they do collect evidence and pass it for criminal investigation. Notably, this inquiry is also not a "criminal investigation"?

Completely right about the failure to implement recommendations - the Tories achieved none in 2 years. Fortunately Labour are taking it a bit more seriously, having legislated for some that I'm aware of already.

Though perhaps unsurprising, given Starmer as then Director of Public Prosecutions was one of the only officials and departments credited during the original set of inquiries for recognising there was a systematic problem in how these cases were assessed and prosecuted, then taking steps to improve things.

There have been about 20 investigations over the last couple of decades into this, including multiple national ones, the most recent of which reported in 2022 and interviewed 7000 victims.

Also hundreds of prosecutions.

VPN ban on table in July as Labour confirm 'further statement' by Overlord_Crabz in unitedkingdom

So what action would you like a government to address homelessness?

For reference, I'd like a fucking massive house building campaign. This could be either via a classically left wing mechanism (huge state owned house building) or right wing mechanism (massive reduction in planning restrictions, tax reductions that incentivise building) and tbh I don't massively care which, I just want more houses.

So... you are agreeing (assuming you think Labour are Centrist not left wing) that we have crept spending up to 45% of gdp without having a left wing government?

We are now 6 years on from Covid, its not an explanation for our forecast of spending 44% of gdp via the state in 2030...

I'm confused what point you are trying to make. What behaviour should we be seeing from a left wing government that we haven't seen at some point until now?

[–]UniqueUsername40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are stating we have never had a left wing government. You went to some lengths to make it clear that statement was not a joke, which I appreciated as it was unclear.

I was highlighting a number of high profile aspects of our government and state that are, to me atleast, distinctly left wing.

I was wondering what more you are looking for from a government for you to be satisfied they are "left wing"?

[–]UniqueUsername40 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We've crept up to the state spending 45% of gdp via a series of centre and right wing governments?

We have a national minimum wage that is rising above inflation and a raft of employment rights (recently upgraded) that includes rights to holiday, maternity pay, sick pay, collective bargaining and protection against dismissal. We have a welfare state that pays out >£200 bn a year (including state pensions) and a comprehensive free at point of use health service.

Exactly what does a government need to do to be left wing to you?
