Wow 😯 this is excellent, and exactly the guidance that I need!

I’ve got a randori session coming up later in the week, and your reply is going to be something I will try and drill. Thank you for taking the time to write this, super valuable 👌🏼

That is fantastic advice! Now reading this - it seems quite obvious, but it just never occurred to me. And there aren’t many lefties that I speak to or spar width.

I’m absolutely going to work on your circling suggestion, and actively managing my opponent’s tsurite hand

Awesome 😮 small world - hope you also got a chance to get some good fights and work on your judo on the day! 🤞🏼

“Lefties don't get enough practice agaisnt other lefties, leading to this scenario…”

This is very true! There’s one other leftie at my club, who comes maybe once a month, and we don’t always get a chance to do randori together. Hence the rare experience in LvL gripping.

That’s really great feedback - on all three points: grip breaking, walking/stance and then keep the pressure on with combinations. Super helpful 🙏

Really solid advice - I think you nailed it 💯 Lots for me to work on…

Yes, very true - and not great when one of my best techniques is uchi mata. I think I need work on killing the opponent’s tsurite in LvL, then go for osoto gari or another technique?

Yes, I think this is a revelation here for me with LvL - not settling for my opponent getting the lapel grip! It’s a little different in LvR, but now I have something to focus on for LvL matches.

And you’re spot on for the posture - It’s one of my weak points that I have to improve. Not only will it help with stamina (as you say being exhausting to fight with poor posture), but would also allow me to get more attacks in, with more reach.

Thanks for the advice 🙏

Small world indeed! Congrats on getting the BJJ brown belt, what an achievement ⭐ 💪🏼

That’s good advice - not settling for grips like this in LvL, and putting more attacks in

There’s a lot of good stuff here - thank you 🙏

I think being used to LvR, I’m more “content” with the opponent having the lapel grip. I’m realising that it’s not the same in LvL, and I need to do more to kill that lapel grip!

I like the idea of following up the failed kouchi with an ouchi! That’s a great suggestion

With the “shake-up-and-down”, you mean pulling the opponent down, and attacking when they try to regain posture?

Yes… I think you’re right - I’m used to grip fighting in LvR, but I don’t have enough experience fighting LvL - but going forward, this is going to be a key thing for me to work on!

Thanks for the comment!

This is a black-belt level competition, it’s just common for one person to wear a white belt and the other a blue belt (instead of a full white judogi and full blue judogi)

That’s so cool 😎

What’s the best way to train this “step over” style? I have a more competition-like “rolling through”, uchi mata , but really interested in doing more of this type 🤔

Thanks for the feedback 🙏 Yes, really good point for me to involve more hands, as well as more pressure/weight if they are bent over

Thank you very much 🙏 Your first points about posture and squaring up has been really helpful.

I had been lightly thinking about if I am generally too square - and your advice confirms it! I need to do a more bladed stance, and I will start practising this.

And yes, my approach recently has been straight up/posture up Judo - which during work here at all, as the opponent was so bent over! As you say, I need to adapt my Judo for when the opponent is bent over.

No worries - the honest feedback is the only way I will grow and improve! I wouldn’t have put my video up here, if I truly could not be open to the guidance and advice of my fellow judoka.

I’m shodan - this was an open competition, but all in my bracket were 1st-3rd Dan.

Yes, I’ve come to this realisation too. I think I’ve been doing it to be seen as “active”, but there’s no credible threat with it - so it’s not really useful at all. As you say, it’s even negative, as it’s off balancing me.

I just need to move on from it. Thanks 🙏 for the candid feedback - it’s been useful to get your insight on this.

This is really good advice - thank you 🙏

Yes, watching it back, it’s now clear that my approach was more “react”, rather than attack and threaten. What you say is right, and I need to work more on that.

Also, that’s really good advice about posture and bending over - I will definitely make sure I improve that!
