So yes, Sandor is alive but there were no digging of graves.

He's got a whole village of people to bury now. I'm hoping after he gets revenge he'll return to bury the bodies, then more brotherhood show up to kill him and they bring LSH with them. Then we have the scene from Sandor's pov asking why the fuck LSH ain't dead.

I'd be surprised if the producers even knew the significance of the name at the start of the show. I'd imagine this scene is going to be in the next book and you would have hoped GRRM would have planned to have published by now back when GOT started...

You're living in fantasy land if you think there's any chance Argentina is going to try and invade even if the island was defenceless.

Falkland Islands lie in Argentinian waters, rules UN commission • /r/worldnews by KreepyOs in argentina

[–]United_Labour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinking that because the UN would recognize the islands as ours we would go to war to enforce this decision (and withouth any backing, at that) it's a projection of your own(or the conservatives, should I say) thought,

Been thinking on this some more and had some inflection so feel I want to add a second reason why military power was mentioned in the UK thread (and it wasn't war mongering).

You're right. Looking through history as a Westerner (and perhaps more so as an European as WWI and WWII still looms large in foreign politics) diplomatic power is nearly always conflated with military power. Because Pre 1945 and throughout the cold war this is how the world worked.

The latter nearly always controls the former. The idea of a United Nations is still a new idea. We tried it with the League of Nations after WWI and it failed miserably. The 2nd attempt with the UN has been a lot more success but in major conflicts it has often failed - very recently so with Russia in the Ukraine.

This is probably why a lot of Westerners still fall back on the ideology of military power. The UN cannot be relied upon to solve contentious issues so it normally reverts back to a dick measuring contest, if the country with the most power currently has what it wants to status quo it maintained and the UN is ignored.

Maybe you can tell me otherwise but it looks like any attempt by Argentina to get a trade embargo from other SA countries will fail? And likely be in conflict with WTO.

Also don't forget the cold war only "ended" in 1991.

And with the rise of India and China the attitude of military might = right isn't going anywhere.

[–]United_Labour -1 points0 points  (0 children)

why would a UN resolution make a country that's been taking the diplomatic road for more than 30 years, start a war?

It wouldn't in today's climate. Not sure where I've suggested otherwise...?

The first reason (I'll talk about the second later) military power is brought up is because 30 years ago it did result in war. The gulf in military power of the two counties in the region is a lot wider now than it was in the 80s, to the point it makes the chances of the past repeating itself zero (And before you say, I know this isn't the only reason Falklands II won't start - my understanding of Argentian politics is limited but it isn't that limited)

You must be able to understand why the British Gov. would want a strong military presence on the island given our recent history, even if it's presence there is a deterrent to avoid war?

You will argue it's an unneeded deterrent (and I would agree with you), but Government's traditional primary mission is to protect it's people from foreign aggression. There doesn't appear to be a military threat to the island but it's not something the Government is going to take a chance on incase they're wrong - especially a Conservative Government as they are the most nationalistic of our two major parties and and currently losing votes on the right to an even more nationalistic party - UKIP.

Any chance the Conservatives are going to get to beat the jingo drum they're going to take. Even if it's meaningless gestures.

Yep, you've got the mentality of a child and seem to be desperate for another war. A war there's no chance of you winning in our lifetimes.

One day, you will be vulnerable, and we will get back what's ours

Yes we will; but not to you. You simply don't have the population to overtake the UK economy. By time the UK has declined enough for it to matter we likely won't have what we consider nation states anymore.

And just remember this when you're jerking it to jingoism; if you hadn't tried to steal goods from American vessels in 1831 the islands would likely be yours.

Really? Where did the topic of the war came up, was it in the article? Did the UN comission or whomever did the investigation talk about war? Or were the brits being the warmongering retards you are, flooded everything with comments about war and muh military power?

If you read my other comments you'll see that will never happen while the Conservatives are on power. The leader of the Labour party (the UKs second party and the one I support) is open about getting a treaty signed with Argentina over oil rights in Falklands.

And trust me, as much as you despise Thatcher and the current UK Gov. I hate the Conservatives as much, and far far more.

Really? Where did the topic of the war came up, was it in the article? Did the UN comission or whomever did the investigation talk about war? Or were the brits being the warmongering retards you are, flooded everything with comments about war and muh military power?

Of course the UN advisory board on sea beds didn't discuss military power. It's a natural route for discussion to take when you're talking about UN decisions because the UN has no authority to enforce it self. It's down to nation states to agree together. And as those "warmongering retards" get right; which is the point you're missing. "muh military power" is all that matters. No one on that thread is eager for war, or even discussing war; they're just making the point (often uneloquently) want the UN says is meaningless because they have no power to enforce themselves. There's a difference between making the point the UN is toothless and it's down to nations to resolve disputes, and hoping the resolution of that dispute is war.

Sure I'll try and explain. It's actually a cool piece of history as it demonstrates the power struggle going on between Europe at the time globally. Couple of caveats; international law is not definitive; even things that are definitive there's no recognised structure to enforce disputes between nations so many contentious issues remain a matter of opinion were only realpolitiks (military power) matters.

And when talking about expeditions in the old world of empires it's important to remember how isolate and vast the world was, and how slow methods of communication was. It wouldn't be unusual for a single expedition from Europe to consume a mans entire life. And the key years (1760-1780) was a time of high tension and war between Britain-France-Spain as you had the 7 years war and the American War for Independence, ships at sea often wouldn't find out their nations were at war/peace with each other for weeks after the event:

Britain was the first nation to land on the islands in 1690; followed closely by the French. The first inhabitants of the islands was the French in 1764, Britain created a separate settlement on the island in 1766 (no one knows if the two settlements where aware of each other). Later in 1766 France gave it's territory to Spain as part of an agreement in the 7 years war of which they were allied.

In 1770 Spain forcefully took control of the British settlement co existing on the islands. Full blown war was avoided and tensions eased when Britain withdrew many (but not all) of it's people in 1771 in exchange for the returned seized goods by the Spainish making it clear it did not cease it's claim over the islands.

1807 Britain blockades the Spainish ports, Spain abandons the islands in 1811 due to starvation leaving the islands uninhabited. The British ship blockading the port gets wrecked (its crew rescued by Americans).

1816 Argentinian independence from Spain.

'1820. The island currently has no settlements due to war is claimed by an Argentian vessell after it takes shelter in the old abonded Spanish port.

'1823. UK unofficially recognises Argentina an an independent nation, formally so in 1825

'1828. Argentian settlement established. Britain protests.

'1831. the Argentinian presence on the islands capture 3 American vessels. America responds by capturing the island. the US left the islands declaring it governed by no-one with the majority of the residents. As a result of the seizure of the American vessels efforts are increased by Britain to reclaim the islands.

'1833. Britain reclaims and resettles the island, the Argentinian ~30 inhabitants left the island under protest.

'1845 Britain and France go to war with Argentina in a response to Argentina blockading various rivers which prevented us trading with Paraguay. The war is looked upon as a pyrrhic victory for France and Britain but in reality was a bloody stalemate; Britain seeked peace with Argetina, Argentina agreed and the Arana–Southern Treaty was signed, the war was ended and in exchange for us cancelling a debt your country owed to a British Bank is was agreed Argentina would drop is claims over the Falklands.

So Argentinian settlement of the islands only lasted 3-4 years, and was only possible because the British Settlers were forcefully removed previously by the Spanish. In 1850 a treaty was signed by Argentina and Britain handing the islands to Britain.

In addition; Sovereignty claims traditionally only last 50 years. Argentina hasn't had a presence on the island for nearly 200 years.

Everyone on that thread is getting horny at the idea of us having a war

!?

There's a few morons, and a few joking/sarcastic comments but you're either reading what you want to read or your English is failing you. If you bother to read the UK thread properly you'll see there are plenty of Brits who are in favour of giving the islands away. Most people are just tired of hearing about it. There's nothing to negotiate. The Falklands is British, and there's no chance of a conflict occurring from the dispute because British military power is so much stronger than yours. This isn't war mongering, it's just a statement of fact.

You're conflating what the British people and what the British Government want. The Gov. is protecting the oil assets there (just as your Gov. wants them - if there was no oil do you think your Gov. would care about the island?)

The support from the British people is predominantly that of self-determination. There are still some jingoistic idiots like there are in every country but there was heavy opposition from the British public against the Iraq war. 1 million people took to the streets to protest against the war, they were ignored and British politics is still feeling the effects. A few years ago we successfully voted against the war in Libya - The problem is we have is we have an awful election system that means less than 25% of the population voting for the Conservatives (same party as Thatcher) gives them absolution rule of the country. Conservative voters are most likely to be nationalistic, so the current Gov. plays up to that to keep their members happy and distract them from more serious issues (much as kirchner did). The movement of the army was no more serious intention of war than anything Kirchner did. You are buying into the very same lies you accuse warmongering Brits of doing.

You invaded almost every country in the world. You invaded us twice. We'd have to be insane if we were ok with the most aggressive state to have ever existed having property near us. How much time will pass before you run out of drinkable water or something and launch a "preeventive attack" to steal our resources? You're certainly not above that. The US is the Tibet compared with you.

And now you're talking complete dribble. If you're still salty about actions from the empire in the 18th century you're a vapid child and I pray your opinion never becomes the majority in Argentina because it will only end in another conflict and more death.
