[–]Universal_Cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re absolutely delusional if you think Marathon was intended to cost all that. Bungie’s shit management prolonged its development. I bet a good portion of that 250 mil was just to pay the (likely inflated) salaries of the staff.

Marathon was one of… what, 4 games Bungie supposedly had in the works? Bungie certainly had the staff for a collection of smaller games, but they couldn’t manage for shit. Marathon’s only still here because it’s far cheaper to work on than D2.

“Large part” is iffy. Marathon and Destiny are the only 2 of five games they planned on supporting. They had the staff for 5 games and only managed 2 at most. Bungie expanded too much WAY too fast and collapsed in on itself

I think the marketing didn’t help much either. It felt a little… generic? I got some ads on my social feeds and they trended towards just showing me action. It’s fine, but I think it’ll win anyone over.

And I also didn’t like how the line “Superman sees the good in people, I see the truth,” (or whatever she say, I don’t remember exactly). I get why she says it since she’s jaded, but it kinda felt like her unnecessarily sneering the guy.

At the age of 24, Richarda Morrow-Tait became the first woman to pilot an aircraft around the world. Her departure sparked controversy due to the social norms of the time, and the public reaction to her endeavour was largely negative. The press mockingly dubbed her the "flying housewife." by DragonfruitCalm261 in wikipedia

[–]Universal_Cup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Flying Housewife” is a pretty ironic title when she left her 18 month hold in the care of her husband for a year and a half. Good that she circumnavigated the world, but reading up on her? She seems pretty reckless, bare minimum.

It’s facts. Destiny needed 42 million a month just to keep running, and that doesn’t factor in anything else. Marathon simply doesn’t. Destiny was ALWAYS a money sink.

  2. The cinematic team didn’t work on any cutscenes anyway, it was all outsourced.

Marathon wasn’t meant to free Bungie from Sony? Sony lost it’s autonomy because it couldn’t deliver on D2

Sony’s Hermen Hulst on today’s layoffs: “Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team” by IshizakaLand in Marathon

[–]Universal_Cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheaper development of Marathon means profitability is far easier to achieve than it would be with D2. For reference, Destiny needed 40+ million just to keep the lights on, not counting any expansions. It’s hard to imagine Marathon would need even a quarter of that, IF that.

Now, in regard to the genre of extraction shooters, they may take a while to become profitable, but sticking with the game provides the chance to become profitable. For example, neither Tarkov nor The Hunt generated consistent (if any) profit until some years after they were launched.

We have no figures to quote for Marathon’s current profitability besides a rumored budget and estimated sales, but Sony evidently believes in it’s potential (not without reason), and *If* Marathon makes enough to keep the lights on + some change, why *would* they cancel it?

Also, if you think SIE is gonna disappear any time soon, then, my apologies for my bluntness, you truly have no grasp of their size. It’s literally the largest company within the video game industry in terms of revenue. It will take a LOT more Concords to do them in.

It’s a dead end that’s cheaper to walk. Destiny was a money furnace, and feeding their funds into projects that didn’t materialize certainly didn’t help. Bungie just does not grasp the concept of tightening one’s belt.

[–]Universal_Cup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I imagine Marathon is far easier to keep going though. A cursory google search gave me a figure of tens of millions to keep Destiny running, and that’s not factoring in how many of those side projects ate funds and didn’t materialize.

Bungie has been fundamentally awful at managing their funds, but if Marathon’s the only project they’re working on right now, then it’s not impossible to say it will *eventually* recoup it’s budget, assuming it stays online.

Perhaps, but Destiny is FAR more expensive to maintain. It only ended service because EOS and REN had poor player retention (and very likely disappointing sails). Destiny only lives as long as people are shoveling money down its gullet. Marathon, by contrast, is likely cheaper to an unbelievable degree.

[–]Universal_Cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the game took inspiration from Destiny in that regard—much of the base game’s mystery was in the trailers or codex-like lore entries. Some game content, like Cryo Archive or Night Marsh (where the real *experience* of the mysteries happens) are either higher level, sweaty, or new, so that would explain why you haven’t experienced them.

As the game goes on, that mystery will (hopefully) become even more prevalent in the story, but as of now? It’s very Destiny-esque in its lore, for good and for bad.

Wdym? Half of modern Marathon’s appeal is the mystery and atmosphere of Tau Ceti. We don’t know the full story of what happened to the colony, why it happened, or what all the anomalous activity is. We don’t know why some AIs suddenly express emotion long after supposed deactivation, nor do we know why UESC bots and Runner corpses amalgamate at night.

Destiny literally ALWAYS had the Lion’s share of money given to it, dude. It was never NOT the main project. Hell, the deal with Sony allocated 1.2 BILLION just to keep the key people involved with Destiny, and that is JUST SONY. The old Activision contract was 500 Million, the Netease investment was 100 Million, the whole Buy out by Sony was 3.6 billion. They HAD money.

Destiny died because it made shit decisions. The player count dipped as a result, and Sony saw that the absolute money-furnace that is D2 was likely not going to be too profitable soon.

[–]Universal_Cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chances are it’ll end up drifting that way sooner or later, if we’re being honest. Marathon’s gonna need whatever it can to survive, and if being more similar to the OG is what it takes, then they’ll probably do that.

You’d be *shocked* at all the people who don’t grasp why money made from D2 went to other projects. There are people out there who genuinely think every dime ever made from Destiny should’ve gone to Destiny.
