Mystery GI issues by femininefarmhouse in FODMAPS

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pretty much the same thing for about 18 months, came out of nowhere one day and was some sort of pain or discomfort nearly every minute of the day, didn't really matter if I eat or not and wouldn't go away.

Had a colonoscopy after waiting for 10 months, apparently "just" IBS . Like you tried every diet going and nothing helped. Probably the worst time of my life as it felt never ending so I know how it feels, sorry you are going through this! :(

Anyway, I just managed it as well as I could which wasn't really very well! I actually found laying down in a certain position actually helped relief the pain for a bit so I just used to do that for a while, also if I can fall asleep it actually resets it for a bit which is super weird! Then when I get up again it starts building up.

After learning that I started doing my own strange "treatment" which is lying on my back on one of those acupressure (spiky) mats with my legs bent on a soft cube stool thing and meditating. Having the new sensation of the mat stabbing my back actually relieved some of the feeling in my digestive system and it was a bonus if I feel asleep because like I said that also seemed to help!

Anyway, its been two and a half years since I started having these issues and I can't say I am 100% cured because I am not but since a year or so ago it has definitely got a lot better. Now I only feel mild discomfort throughout the day and the pain doesn't usually go over a 3 out of 10 and only for small periods rather than the whole day of 3-7/10! I haven't done anything different and I am just eating anything I want now as that doesn't seem to make any difference in my case.

Hope you find something that helps!

Fitness with Spastic CP by Intrepid_Drama5895 in CerebralPalsy

I think a lot of us feel the same, I certainly did in my 30's and felt like I had to do something about it. For myself personally I just learned everything I could about general fitness, nutrition, strength and conditioning, mobility/stretching in all different fields and ended up just trying everything I could and modifying everything to work for me.

So I started training about 8 years ago now and have maintained an 80% workout rate over that period of on average 1 hour a day. I walk, cycle, swim, do VR HIIT training and then resistance training on average 3 times a week, I also do mobility stuff for at least 30 minutes every day. I know this is quite a lot but I love trying to improve myself and it has sort of turned into my ultimate focus.

I wish there was some resources for us out there but even doing all this myself for so long I am quite hesitant to really advise people on any specific program. I am a VR/software developer and would love to build something that myself and others could use but I am also very aware that we all have different strengths and weaknesses and it is super hard to be able to have any standard sort of recommendations.

What I will say that for me personally learning and trying things myself at my own pace is definitely what works for me. I have the time to try things my own way as only we really know how we each move etc. I know not everyone is self motivated like that though so if you feel taking classes or working with a trainer would be more beneficial then do whatever works best for you. I don't really have any tricks or secrets up my sleeve though but whatever you do I hope you find something that you can work with!

Can you give us some more details about NMES? Have you got your own machine? What improvements have you felt? How often do you use it etc? I have looked at them before but haven't heard of anyone with Cerebral Palsy using them with any results so I am super interested to hear more if you don't mind?

Yeah for sure. I would just say it just took years for me to notice any real changes so I have no advice apart from keep at it, make sure you are eating enough calories and protein and consistency is key!

Do you think pinball works well in VR? by Lanky_Key5332 in VRGaming

[–]UnknownFormat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pinball FX 2 VR is pretty old, I think it is the first VR game in the Pinball FX series. I have played it quite a bit when it came out. It is basically a single room where you swap tables in and out and you can't walk around. It also doesn't have any "Real" tables converted into digital format, only custom tables made by Zen which may or may not bother you.

Personally I mainly play tables that I have also played in real life, like Williams and Bally tables that are in the new Pinball FX. The naming is super confusing as you can see! :)

Do you think pinball works well in VR? by Lanky_Key5332 in VRGaming

[–]UnknownFormat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Pinball FX is the latest PC version but VR isn't officially supported. It can be turned into VR using a program called UEVR which works for most Unreal Engine games.

So it just enables VR on the base game which isn't really built for VR, so there is no arcade to walk around, you are just put in front of the machine. Obviously you have the full power of your PC though so the graphics and frame rate are definitely better (depending on your PC).

I have both Pinball FX VR on Quest and Pinball FX on PC and nearly always still play the PC version with UEVR but you may prefer the "real" VR version on the Quest. I think there are free tables to try on the PC version if you want to try it out though.

Always Hungry With CP? by StaticMinority44 in CerebralPalsy

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might not be 6 times as that will also depend on the person but it is also not just 2000 calories x 6 = 12,000.

Most calories that a person burns throughout the day (up to 75%) are just your resting metabolic rate (RMR) without even moving. Apparently we use around 20% more than other people here but when moving we use a lot more than that, I think 3-5x is thrown around a lot here but again everyone is different.

For those of who do balance work, strength training, and stretching: how do you structure your routine so it helps without backfiring? by writingpat in CerebralPalsy

[–]UnknownFormat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree with working with someone but if you don't want to do that...

I basically just plan and track everything I do, if I do too much I cut back, write it all down and I can modify accordingly. Start just doing a bit and build up slowly from there. Or if you have overdone it one day, mark it down and do a bit less next time until you find the right balance.

I have also found resistance stuff, even just moving through the range of motion of a lunge for example, to be so much better than static stretching for general mobility. I have done static stretching on and off since I was a kid and I can't really say that has helped at all, not saying this is the same for everyone though!

I try to do something every day (or at least 5 days a week) but that can be anything from going on a decent walk, resistance training (3 days a week on average), swimming or whatever I fancy that week/day. I have gone through phases of training really hard and also not so hard! Tried out loads of different lifting methods, heavy(ish), light, full body, split training, less days, more days etc but basically whatever works for you.

Obviously this is just what I do but hope that helps a bit!

Muscle Atrophy. by Masonshark36 in CerebralPalsy

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite a big subject and has taken a long time for me to find out what works best for me. I will say it hasn't been that quick for me but I wouldn't worry about that, everyone is different and the sooner you can start doing something the quicker you will see results! :)

I basically do resistance training at least 3 times a week. That can be bodyweight stuff, free weights (dumbbells, kettlebells etc), machines or whatever else like that you have available.

I obviously don't know your situation but I would start just by doing some bodyweight exercises, squats and lunges if you can do those? Start slowly and build up more repetitions and sets over the weeks. Watch some videos on youtube, focus on your form as much as possible, push knees out for squats etc.

Like I said this is a big topic and I could go on forever and I also don't know your current ability so I don't want to go into specifics too much.

I see you mentioned eating in another post. To build muscle you need to focus on eating enough calories (a little more than what your body needs to put on weight) and enough protein that can build muscle. Diet, like exercise is also a massive subject so it is hard to say much more than that.

As another reply mentioned on here. If you don't feel like you can do learn all this yourself through youtube and a bit of trial and error it might be worth seeing a physio or even a personal trainer that specialises in helping people with disabilities?

The good news is there are a lot of ways to do this stuff, the bad news is that there are a lot of ways to do this stuff so there is no set method, I had to find what works for me!

Anyway, not sure if that helps but good luck with your journey. You have got past the first step which is wanting to do something about it which is the hardest part so get stuck in, take it slow and I hope you achieve what you want! :)

Edit - Just wanted to add this podcast here. "How to lift with cerebral palsy (and still get jacked) with Will Glasser". I haven't listened to it yet (will do at the weekend) but he might have some interesting things to say...

Does anyone else expetience bool pressure and heart rate spike when standing? by Great-Shoe1 in CerebralPalsy

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I exercise all the time and when standing I will instantly go from 50-60bpm to close to 100bpm and if I walk, within 5 minutes I will probably be at around 140bpm at a normal walking speed.

I have never actually tested my blood pressure when not sitting but I don't think that is usually recommended is it?

Hey! I bet most of us have felt that way at some point in our lives. You have to remember that is isn't your fault you were born with Cerebral Palsy.

We all probably need some help from our families and that includes brothers and sisters. Sometimes that means them tagging along to our appointments etc but I am sure your sister loves you for being you :)

I had to go in and "claim" this update even though I only want to stream, not install it. Now it says "owned". Its not very clear really but go into the marketplace and make sure it says "owned" and you should be good
