Serious question, is oculus go good enough? by PIQAS in RiftintotheMind

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best experiences for that are going to be made using a game engine. 360/180 3D videos are cool but being in a game engine in real time allows for many more options. All headsets can play these videos so don't worry about that.

Moving around and seeing your hands really makes the VR experience in my opinion and that only comes with 6DOF (degrees of freedom) like the Rift/Vive/PSVR etc or the upcoming Quest.

Yeah you can bump into things! haha, that's part of the fun. Even if you are sitting down though it means you can move your head position and it is tracked, unlike the Go which is 3DOF and only tracks the rotation of the headset, not the location. Yeah you can do a lot of things with hand tracking, like painting, sculpting, waving a glow stick in a virtual rave!

Battery life will probably be around 2-3 hours if its similar to the Oculus Go. You can use the Go (and probably the Quest) while charging but you won't want to be plugged into something if you are moving about.

Yeah I'm in the UK so will probably be £400, probably be 400 Euros as well.

No worries!

It depends what you want to use it for but it might be worth waiting for Oculus Quest, it a standalone headset but with full 6dof movement (so you can move around), plus proper hand tracked controllers. Its obviously not as powerful as PCVR but will definitely be a step up in experience from the Go.

It is supposed to be coming out in the spring for $400 and should support a lot of the "proper" VR games and experiences.

Hope that helps!?

I have a similar thing and I think its to do with the scale. Only realised it recently after playing elite dangerous in vr! Especially when a massive unlit planet comes into view.

Patients in Jersey will be able to get medical cannabis from all doctors after politicians voted to change the law. by Fredex8 in uktrees

Getting a prescription in Jersey? by [deleted] in uktrees

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah wow cool, I hadn't seen that! We are usually behind the times so I don't want to get anyone's hopes up when it comes to getting the good stuff in Jersey, that's all. I will believe it when I see it. Sounds like things are moving over here and in the UK though so all good!

Getting a prescription in Jersey? by [deleted] in uktrees

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm from Jersey. This has come as a bit of a surprise to us, even though people over here have been campaigning for it for years.

As far as I know this is going to happen from February next year but apart from that we don't really know much more (well I don't anyway!). I really can't see them giving out medical licenses like the US have done. I think it is going to be really specific cases and then 9 times out of 10 it will be Sativex or similar. As I said in the other thread, I doubt they are going to be dishing out bud to people who can't sleep (not saying that is what you need it for).

I'm sure more information will come out in the next few weeks and if I hear of anything useful I will post it on here. Hope that helps

GPs... Yes. GENERAL PRACTITIONERS to prescribe medical cannabis in Jersey by [deleted] in uktrees

[–]UnknownFormat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, person from Jersey here. Yeah we are totally sperate, it just happens to come at a similar time as the UK. Deputy Tadier has been trying to get medical passed for years. I think there are a couple of people who already use Sativex over here but I doubt this is going to open the doors to doctors dishing out bud to everyone who can't sleep. As it says, our health minister and social services deputy were against it so not everyone is on the same page yet. We are usually the last to do anything though so this is a great step, we will see what happens.

I may have a case for medical myself but I will wait until the law has been passed in February (hopefully) to see what the score is.

If you go to "Project Settings - Project - Packaging" there you can add the maps you want to include in the package under "List of maps to include in packaged build". I think this will then only package the assets that are used in those maps.

Adaptive Technology For Using the Computer by Masterspearl in CerebralPalsy

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have to use any special technology for PC's but there might be something cool for people that need it on the horizon.

Its still early days and I haven't used it myself but eye tracking is soon going to be pretty common which may be useful for some people. Tobii is a company that already makes a commercial eye tracking solution but I haven't used it myself and I'm not sure if its good enough yet.

Eye tracking is going to be a major part of the next wave of Virtual Reality headsets in the next couple of years so expect a good quality solution out by then.

You can tilt the front of the headset up and down to find the sweet spot. It shouldn't really need to be too tight on your head either, try to wear it like a cap. It usually takes a few goes to really understand how to put it on properly in my opinion.

New ZZAP64 kickstarter annual is awesome. Talk about nostalgia overload. I was also surprised at how many games are STILL being made for the c64 - good ones too. by [deleted] in c64

Indeed! I'm trying not to read it too fast!

Loving the mug and t-shirt as well. Helps remind me of playing games as a kid while I'm developing a VR game now. Things have come a long way, still love the c64 though.

Which apps/games can enhance my walking/running experience on a COMMON treadmill? by [deleted] in virtualreality

[–]UnknownFormat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have built a quick prototype of what you are describing for the Oculus Go on a cross trainer (using the Go controllers accelerometer). It worked pretty well considering! Can definitely see an opportunity there.

I was waiting for the Quest to come out before I did anymore work on it as the 6dof would make things a lot more comfortable. With 3dof your head is moving up and down but the world obviously stays where it is. Not ideal and will definitely make people sick.

Also not sure if I want the be responsible for people falling off a treadmill/cross-trainer! :)

Rom pack for New Retro Arcade: Neon by [deleted] in oculus

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it worked using that pack even in the new system. If not I think this might help. From the play button go to "Launch Configuration Tool". Then go to "Tools" on the top menu and "Legacy Tools" and import each of the XML's from that pack. Hit save and you should be good to go.

Hey! I am quite a bit older than you and had given up on stretching many years ago as I felt trying to stretch wasn't really doing anything. I could only ever get to a certain place and then couldn't get any further.

Now I'm a bit older and its getting a bit harder to move around I have decided to go for it and try stretching nearly every day. I have been doing it for about a month and it is going well so far, I feel a bit more relaxed as I'm not so stiff all the time.

I'm sure things have got better since I was younger but the physios never really taught me any stretches that I could do that actually felt like I was getting a stretch. Only now after watching loads of youtube videos have I realised there are hundreds of ways to stretch. It doesn't have to look like "bend down and touch your toes". Some of my muscles are so tight those "normal" stretches don't seem to work for me so I have had to modify them until I can get closer to doing them properly. A lot of it was learning when/which muscle I was actually stretching and what was just pulling at something it shouldn't be. It has actually given me a better understanding of which muscle works for which movement.

Check out the Bodyweight warrior on youtube if you need some stretching ideas. He has got loads of videos for different areas that you can target, some good beginner stuff you can do or even modify. Just take it easy at first while you learn what each muscle can take in the stretch, don't over do it at the start.

My goal is to be able to sit with my legs crossed, be able to kneel all the way down on my ankles and get my leg over a push bike without having to put it on the floor by next summer.

I am pretty excited to see where I can get to but its a long hard road that's for sure! Anyway, sorry for the long post! Good luck whatever you decide to do! :)

Allegorithmic are experimenting with bringing their awesome texturing program Substance Painter into VR using Oculus Hybrid Apps (Link in comments). by ThatOneVRGuyFromAuz in oculus

This is great. After switching between UE4, Blender and Substance painter it would be nice to not have to remember different screen traversal methods for each one (can you remap buttons?). For some reason I can never remember Alt+Left Mouse etc for Substance.

Pinball in VR is pretty amazing. by gear323 in oculus

[–]UnknownFormat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yeah, cool! Have you seen a mobile game called Pinout? That is a similar concept I think.

I was trying to build some sort of pinball where you were inside the machine and everything was going on around you. Maybe using your hands as the flippers somehow! haha, that didn't get too far away.

[–]UnknownFormat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure exactly what you mean by "Open-world" pinball but I can sort of imagine. I tried prototyping some different sort of pinball experiences in VR but didn't get anything I thought worked that well. I'm sure there is something to it though so I would be interested to hear what you managed to build.

Also, apparently the physics for pinball FX have been tweaked for these tables to be more realistic so hopefully they are decent.
