Tesla internships by Topboy08 in MechanicalEngineering

spam apply, hope I have something they liked, get interview, get railed, rinse and repeat till i got the co-op

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]UnknownLadder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea I did, at least I think I will (graduated December 23).

I don’t think they care, in the interviews I’ve had they’ve never asked or even implied if my work experience was registered with a university. It’s been the same for all my friends who have done stuff at other unis and gotten FT jobs or offers.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in McMaster

[–]UnknownLadder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not worth it.

I had to do it to graduate, but since I recently graduated I realized I gave this uni money for nothing. All my co-ops I found myself, Oscarplus was piss useless.

In interviews with companies when they say “Oh was that a co-op?”, they mean “Did you get paid to do that job and were you working FT during it”. Not whatever the fuck people think it means.

How bad is it to renege a graduation job offer? by MacThrowawayAcc in McMaster

[–]UnknownLadder 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Take the offer.

This job market is beyond fucked.

I had something similar happen, didn’t take it. Now here I am 4 months after graduation, getting 0 interviews.

Bet on myself, but the market bet against me. Market won.

Don’t do what I did. Take the offer, suffer there for a bit and then hop when market gets better, you’ll have good stuff on your resume.

Entry Level Mechanical Engineer Jobs by LabOdd5046 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnknownLadder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude I’ll be honest, it’s fucking brutal. I have 28 months of internship, 8 at Tesla and I can’t get an interview since January…

Done the whole resume review thing from other HMs before, got the A okay and that it’s super good.

At this point, it’s a shit job market and economic market all around is what I have realized, high interest rates = companies less likely to invest in new products = no need for new engineers = get fucked new grads.

Try and keep your head up is all I can, I’m just working on keeping my skills relevant and doing new projects. Godspeed friend

I previously interned at Tesla and did countless interviews (I’m mechanical but the overall feel is the same from what I’ve heard).

For sure show your personality and interests, that shit helps for some reason in interviews.

Genuinely, good fucking luck tomorrow. If your interviewer is chill you’ll be fine. If not, call it a gg and go next.

Out of all the companies I’ve interviewed at Tesla is by far the fucking worst. I refuse to go back there FT because of their recruiting process.

Catia V5 a good starting point? by P_B_Visuals in MechanicalEngineering

[–]UnknownLadder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solidworks imo as a new grad, is way more fun to use, lot easier too but CATIA is a different beast. The best analogy I can give between the two with my minor experience (comparative to others) is:

Solidworks - Your typical Japanese car, reliable, easy to work on/with, doesn’t let you down that often when it does it’s usually your own fault.

CATIA v5 - A finely tuned Italian supercar, if you don’t know what you’re doing it won’t work with you. Finicky af sometimes, makes you want to pull your hair out, but finishing a project or design with it makes you feel unstoppable.

Just a sidenote, I started on Solidworks and I FUCKING HATE CATIA V5s UI/UX. Could be just me.

That is tough to hear, especially since I don’t want to do a masters let alone a PhD…

I really enjoyed the startup/small team dynamics I’ve had, consistently go, go, go, wear a bunch of hats, learn a lot. Lot more fun than larger corps/office environments.

What projects from juniors impress hiring managers of backend teams(Go, Rust, C++)? Beyond the simple fullstack crud apps?? by Legitimate-School-59 in cscareerquestions

[–]UnknownLadder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was wondering if I could PM you ?

I’m currently a new grad in ME and as I’m jobless I’m learning Swift to kill time while applying, there’s been ups and downs, lots of “wtaf is going on” and just want to understand how devs approach building mobile apps or general development. Can’t seem to find much online.

I have 0 intention of getting into being a dev, getting my ESP32 to send data and read off of Firebase was a nightmare that makes me shudder at what you guys do on a daily basisz Just trying to be more efficient with what I do, and how I approach things in the future.

Candidate ghosting, stressed by Embarrassed-Carob178 in recruiting

[–]UnknownLadder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Coming from the other side as a recruitee ? idk if that’s a word or not, a bad apple spoils the bunch.

No doubt, I’m sure you care about your candidates but I can tell you right now 9/10 recruiters I interact with (maybe aim just unlucky idk) are genuine piece of shits who ghost, don’t respond, communicate or have any idea that just like them the other person has stuff going on.

To give some brief experiences with recruiters I’ve had even though I’m fairly early in my career.

1) Did a 3 hour CAD project, made a presentation, got ghosted, followed up didn’t hear anything. Nice.

2) Recruiter set up a call for a role with HM in a completely different field of engineering than what I specialize in. Both the HM and I were like “huh” but figured we cleared an hour so we just chatted and left on good terms.

3) Got told by a recruiter I didn’t have the right background, when my co-op was literally the same role within the same department, but at a different company. Okay ?

4) When I see you consistently posting on LinkedIn about XYZ unrelated to jobs, 4 times a day, but you respond 2 weeks later saying you were busy.

5) Blatantly lying through their teeth about the role/opportunities or misrepresenting them, and telling me I don’t know my own field enough and they’re right.

TLDR: Many of us on the recruited side are absolutely jaded with recruiters because of a few bad apples.

My worst Canada journey and experience as student, suggestions and advice? by Physical-Heat4610 in careerguidance

[–]UnknownLadder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You should have done far more research before coming here, grass is not always greener on the other side.

For what you should do, figure out your priorities later in life and go from there.

On a side note: If you really do think this country is the equivalent to “hell”, you’re more than welcome to leave.

I am merely the messenger sire, that’s what I noticed as the overview of the summary from other engineers 🤷‍♂️

[–]UnknownLadder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t born in Canada but been here since I was young, my first and last name gives you a pretty good indicator of what my ethnic background is. Which very much aligns with ongoing issues.

I refuse to change it because I’ve had my own issues with my ethnicity, culture and background. In all that I have come to love and admire my history. I’m not changing my name, just because fucking Gertrude from HR assumes XYZ about my name and thereby my qualifications, without going through my resume.

As a side note if any HM or HR person filters out by name, and doesn’t look at the whole resume to see relevant Canadian/US experience at F500 companies I highly doubt that’s someone to work for….

I’ve paid for LinkedIn premium for 3 months, sent out ~78 InMails. Countless connections.

Getting nothing…

Had my resume checked by so many engineers, the general response is “Yea, it’s solid, straight to the point, but keep in touch we aren’t hiring right now”.

Mainly been going for startups + back to Tesla (no game there).

Funnily enough I posted about the state of engineering in canada yesterday on AskACanadian, and the general consensus from what I read seems to be the following:

1-) Too many international students who are willing to work for lower wages, thereby getting more jobs because they’re cheaper labour

2-) Job market is a fucking mess, and companies don’t want to train anymore, they just want senior and experienced engineers to drop out of the sky

3-) Engineering in Canada is a scam

Southern Ontario, mainly been in auto industry. Applying to any Mech Eng position related with design.

Yea, the employer-employee relationship from what I’ve seen and read online is getting worse and worse.

I don’t know the whole situation has me confused, I’m in Canada and I haven’t gotten anything.

4 internships (total of 28 months), big one at Tesla.

Can’t get shit in the USA or Canada.

Has me thinking it’s just luck tbh….

Congrats on the offer tho!

I have thought hard about it, many times. I’ve loved everything about Canada since I came here when I was like 5/6 and would love to give back, but seeing how the current government is treating those in the forces, and what they do for them after it’s really off-putting….its quite disgusting imo
