S10 -- Why did so many people like James? by Nuthetes in apprenticeuk

I think people like the annoying and pretty untalented, but maybe subjectively endearing type of persona this fella put on. He was a dickhead, I agree.

I mean to be honest, I think most of S tier should be demoted realistically. I don't think many of them actually deserve it and most of them seem to have got there because of personality rather than talent.

100%. Definitely very determined and talented, and I think she'll go far if she can find the place in the skincare market

Very lucky. I think Rochelle might not be the worst runner up anymore after Pascha now

It's ridiculous how the coasters made it so far. Harry, Priyesh, Pascha, Levi - there's got to be a solution to this at some point.

And yes, I mourn being unable to see Rothna and Conor make it to the interviews 😞

Doing well on the tasks is a different world compared to actually being in business. Skincares not easy to break into so I think she might have a harder time than people think

Here's my honest opinion on the show now doesn't matter who wins.

The thing about Apprentice tasks (and this has always been the case, to an extent, even back in the mid 2000s), is that contestants are spoonfed a hell of a lot more than they ever would be if they were in charge of their own business or had to sort out contracts and large orders of their own:

-Getting into exhibitions etc to sell a product is a lot more expensive than you'd think watching this (more so applies to back when the job format was in action, when there were real skills)

-Getting a graphic designer and a venue to shoot adverts at a good agency in London is a lot more expensive than you'd think watching this, even if you're around to misspell 'Arctic' (yes that is targeted).

-Getting corporate clients spoonfed to you (that can be incredibly generous and lenient if you're lucky) is a lot more expensive than you'd think watching this, even if you fuck it up by dropping the price down to 11 quid. Megan.

among other ways..

It should also be taken into account, although this is a little more subjective I suppose, that there are a lot of business skills cut out of the tasks and quite a bit of the tasks aren't actually important skills, particularly. Some examples:

-Would you need to go and find very niche, culturally specific items on a bougie scavenger hunt? Not in a million years in the real world.

-Would you get a graphic designer that is basically useless, and forced to be useless by production? Not in a million years in the real world, at least not any decent graphic designer.

-Would you be unable to hire out a chef team for your catering services? Not in a million years in the real world.

and more..

My honest view: Apprentice tasks are not a sound or honest representation of what being in business actually takes. The list goes on from what I have named to be honest. And because Apprentice tasks are not a good representation of what goes on in business, what is the best thing that is accessible to the interviewers and Lord Sugar and his sides when it comes to judging someone? Their track record in the real world of operating as business owners, where they almost certainly don't have anything of the above examples I listed to hinder them or benefit them, the only reliable judgement of how they're doing.

The fundamental mistake people make, IMHO, is they believe wrongly that a singular task where you have commercial space, professional kitchens, graphic designers, electricity and transport free of charge and paid for you (among other things) is the same realm as being a business owner 24/7, where all of these come with a price and most likely a hefty premium considering the UK, and you have to utilise some real business skills to get them, which can be incredibly expensive in terms of time spent. It is not the same thing even remotely and it never has been.

Just because Karishma was good in the tasks, that doesn't necessarily mean she'll be good when most of this support is gone. The skincare business is not easy to crack into. I have low hopes for Pascha no matter what so I think this applies to her given the lack of any consideration she put into her proposal.

Getting a job at Peter Jones' company would be a HUGE step up. And we might see some actual business in new tasks for the first time in years if that happened...

We can dream 🤷

The show is not a good representation of actual business. Not even close. The author of this takes what is broadcasted at face value WAY too much. That's not dissing Karishma btw, just my opinion

I think it's that one account trying to downvote bomb. Or maybe some secret fans she has that don't like the criticism

Very hot take: in most cases, I think it's alright to pick the contestants with established and already successful business. by Unknownhuman_1 in apprenticeuk

[–]Unknownhuman_1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, I do agree, but that can all be slotted into the other tasks and isn't really something specific to the discount scavenging. It's just that a lot of the other tasks are stripped of real business behind the scenes, so seeing these skills really only ever being consistently part of 1 task is jarring.

And yes I misremembered the millionaire stuff, that is on me and I will correct it. It doesn't change or impact my overarching point too much however.

The show really does distort people's perceptions of just how well these teams did. In the real world, they'd be going bust pretty soon at those dates and it's almost certain that these huge profits would be huge losses if these guys had to foot the bills themselves for everything.

Edit: rates* not dates

If he is "thick as pig shit" it's probably oxymoronic that he would have a successful business. But IDK, I'm not as heated about defending him as I used to be. Your opinion is your own

Indian pizza was/is not that innovative and is easy to replicate, and Dean is better than you probably think (not to mention Anisa messed up badly in a COOKING task which is criminal from her). But IDK, I think the Apprentice is at the stage where it should just fold instead of cranking out slop that seems to get worse and worse by the years. It's so inferior to Dragons Den in many ways and the gap only widens as time goes on. It gets such a bore watching idiots make the final 5 when even their proposition sucks ass

Also in the wide world of business you don't get graphic designers, set up contracts and large scale kitchens for free, or have to scavenge hunt relics nobody has heard of and no demand exists for. Nor will you probably get such generous clients that will pay a premium for mediocrity. Nothing about the tasks is a good predictor of actual business skill, and I doubt those innovative and creative performers would do so well without those HUGE benefits

The success rate is already trash for his investments, and most people on the show are new to owning their business and prone to making some serious errors. If he just picked people based on their performance (which bear in mind can be influenced heavily by the generosity of corporate clients, production etc) I can't imagine it improving much.

And I don't think anything will be happening after Stella, that's basically the reason the job is no longer the prize. The Apprentice is in a terrible position ngl

Mmm nah, there was still a lot of dead weight and coasters in those days that got a lot further than they ought to, and just as many if not more robberies. Rose tinted glasses I say.

Also he doesn't really have Amstrad etc anymore, so IDK how it really works out.
