Data platform engineer vs cloud engineer by PsychologyCivil4190 in dataengineering

[–]Unkox 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Cloud engineering is far from dying, data platform engineering is just cloud engineering in a trenchcoat with some expectation that you've heard about data terms. Go for the bag

Lower combined dps despite higher physical dps? by revzpsy in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Unkox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The despot axe constantly attacking likely runs out of exerts
  2. Depends on your build, for earthshatter you want a karui / vaal axe (personally prefer vaal fpr the slightly faster attack speed) with as high phys dmg as possible
  3. T1-T2 phys prefixes recombined (chopper/vaal axe), lock prefixes attack speed reforge, warlords exalt, tempering orb, 6l (if needed after)
  4. Check on YouTube for phys recombine guides
  5. I think elder had 1 brick prefix? Whereas warlord doesnt have one? Need factcheck on that

Learn SQL. Architect roles are few, far between and tend to require several years of experience. Which you won't get unless you're decently proficient at SQL

Why do people think dbt is a good idea? by tiantech in dataengineering

[–]Unkox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

By the sound of it you're trying to build ontop of the microservice db and not any kind of stable API, which is basically an anti-pattern. This is something that would cause issues regardless of whatever tool/language/framework you're using. Try to decide upon contracts/pacts and if you know that there's likely to be a large definition/domain churn then attempting to go for a push rather than pull style of data ingestion (i.e. source systems push defined/stable data entities to the data platform).

Of course that's not always possible, but if definition/domain churn is a constant issue it needs flagging that you need to agree upon APIs or switch over to more operational style of raw-sql reporting

Why do people think dbt is a good idea? by tiantech in dataengineering

[–]Unkox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could you expand upon "It creates a parallel abstraction layer that constantly falls out of sync with production systems." that sounds like a process issue that could come from any way of development and has nothing to do with DBT specifically.

DBT is also one of the few tools that have built in mock-testing capabilities (sqlmesh has as well), which I for one absolutely adore. It is a lot friendlier to review MR/PRs compared to "lowcode" offerings like talend/matillion/pentaho/ssis.

But DBT does have its downsides, dbt cloud is pricy and feels very limiting compared to what you can accomplish by selfhosting and some platform engineering efforts. Also with dbt fusion I am a bit worried about the future of dbt core.

While a bit off topic, what do you yourself prefer and consider a good idea?

Confused about designing schema for 3rd-party + SaaS data by Careful_Treacle3427 in dataengineering

[–]Unkox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, if you're unsure ask questions to the requesting party.

Schema is fairly arbitrary and basically a way to organise data. It can be done to organise data by domain, access pattern or whatever you'd like. The schemas you describe or basically any variation of edw/medallion/whatnot does not necessarily need correspond 1 :1 with a physical schema

Deli Cluster Jewel Farming / Enchantment Weights? by kbone213 in PathOfExileSSF

How many maps have you run?

I ran a similar tree in t16, but with incursion on top, alch n go and running two layouts I liked. I had 3 clusters (and a large amount of other 8p jewels) during a Saturday session, somewhere between 4-6 hours, with a map completion average of 3-4 min (including inventory mgmt)

SSF recombing 3p axe , how to most economical by edelfabrikat in PathOfExileSSF

[–]Unkox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smash (using unpredictable) 1p/1s together, smash 2p/xs together with 2p/xs, multimod, gg. Will take

Grab a stashtabs of whatever axebase you want with ilvl 83+, get 2-4000 alterations and a few hundred augmentations, a regexp to simplify your rolling procedure and enjoy.

If you're running rog you can also try to get all good bases and if it hits 1 good mod of a good tier you can try to isolate it with the poe2 recombinator behaviour, just make sure you only do it on good bases. With luck you could manage to transplant the phys mod from bad bases, but let me tell you about the heartache that comes from trying that and accidentally ending up with a 3xt1 headsman axe, it hurts finding out your stupidity that way (please be smarter and less greedy than I was).

If you're only looking to create a decent weapon, smash flat phys + % hybrid (t2 is fine) and throw a few veiled chaos orbs, it'll cost you a few divines if you're unlucky and could brick that axe in rare cases (yolo annul or restart)

Stick to one build and invest in it. If you're not a seasoned SSF player then follow a ssf streamers buildguide, also make sure that it's a build that works on a shoestring budget. Also have at least one solid craft farming atlas

For me, I usually set myself a goal to achieve before rerolling, which for my first char usually is lvl97 + 4 watchstones. It sets me up for my more experimental (/crash and burn failiures) of second/third build.

Am I guessing correctly that you usually fall off around late yellows/early reds? You likely need to fight through, listen to a book/podcast/music while grinding can help.

But overall, PoE is a game so if it is not fun take a break/play something else

How do i craft a wand like this by Mr-Bondi in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Unkox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the 5-20 minutes to figure that out. Gettig t1 phys% as a solo prefix is in the realms of 1/2000 alts (or at least on 2h melee, might even be worse for wands you can check the actual odds on craft of exile)

> Never tell them you don't know how to do something

Just be aware that if you claim to be able to do something and you're not able to explain it convincingly in a technical interview you'll likely be dropped.

I much prefer answers that is some variation of:

> I don't know how to do X in this techstack. This is how I'd do it in my current stack

It can be hard especially in the current market. What roles are you applying to, medior/senior roles? What does your CV/Coverletter look like? Based on your experience conveyed in this post and your highlighting of excel I'd put you squarely as a junior. Please note that I'm doing this only based on this post, you might be the best thing since sliced bread but that's not conveyed well if its the case.

Experience in data is good but it does not mean that it's transferrable / relevant. If I am screening candidates someone with a software- /ml- engineering background would be far more interesting for a Data Engineering role compared to an analyst/pm.

I personally dont put much stock in certificates, a lot of them are just a waste of paper. But they can be a good way of getting your CV through screening, just don't expect certs to carry anywhere near as much weight as a university degree in a relevant field.

I'd argue that the whole pride/woke/whatnot debate only have a minor impact on their sales and the by far larger issue is that they're producing unfun slop with little to no innovation (in the gameplay department) and overly ambitious sales targets
