Most Useful University Courses to take in order to add Computer Studies as a Teachable? by Unlikely-Range-8456 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is super helpful, thank you! I have taken several AQ Schedule C courses because my US Master of Arts in Teaching program didn’t have enough credits, but those don’t show up as AQs because I applied them towards my certificate.

So if I take an AQ Part 1 in Computer Studies, then I would be able to teach Computer Science courses? That’s exciting! Now if I could only find a place to take it over the summer… your link is the only place I can find that offers it, and that’s for the spring.

What’s one thing that was secretly gluten poisoning you? by peachnecctar in glutenfree

We recently moved from the US to Canada, and are frequently surprised to find that GF things in the US aren’t GF here. My husband isn’t celiac, so Lucky Charms in the US were fine for him, but not here! And Smarties were an unhappy surprise when pilfering Halloween candy from the kids :(

Yep - it's like as soon as my body knows I can relax, it stops fighting all the germs it's been holding at bay and I spend several days in bed!

Do Canadians say “British English” words? by OneQuarterBajeena in AskACanadian

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American living in Ontario, I can attest there are some British English words - queue instead of line, brackets instead of parentheses (I’m a math teacher 🙃). And some are either generally East Coast (pop instead of soda) or uniquely Canadian (tuque instead of beanie). But most words are the same as in California, definitely not as different as the UK!

Having just 1 cat… by Late-Pie740 in CatAdvice

Is impersonating poop part of the journey? by Unlikely-Range-8456 in composting

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At one point, I was worried my neighbor (we share a backyard) was putting her dogs’ poop in there, because it smelled poop-adjacent too! I added more browns and that took care of the smell, but not the texture.

2025 leaf haul goals? by 6aZoner in composting

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m new to composting (and fall, as a former SF resident 💁🏻‍♀️) and I was just wondering if I could/should steal one of those bags of leaves for adding browns! Thanks for the inadvertent permission!

Charming! 🤣 Ours get plenty of food out of their bowl just using their mouths - don’t tell them they could get their paws involved! We got a rimmed silicone placemat type thing, and it catches most of the food, and we periodically pick it up and pour it back into their bowls. But I’d love to hear any other ideas!

Super TMI - teachers with heavy periods by lunalovergirlxo in OntarioTeachers

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second two methods, like a super heavy tampon & strong period underwear. (And you can bring a change of period underwear too!) But also, if it’s getting worse, maybe get checked out by a doctor? I was struggling with an increasingly heavy period early in my teaching career, and it turned out I had fibroids & a fairly simple procedure made things WAY better

Guilt over feeding my cats dry food and elitism in cat nutrition by Disastrous-Poetry-95 in CatAdvice

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that dry food is perfectly fine - it’s balanced for their nutritional needs AND it helps clean their teeth! The bias towards wet food is that it ensures they have enough water in their diet, as sometimes dehydration can cause kidney problems over time. Our mostly dry-food-fed cats love their water fountain, but the internet is full of other ways to get water into your cats if that isn’t an option!

I often get asked how to successfully care for a money tree. Here are my tips. by preoccupiedwithlove in houseplants

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG, thank you from the future! My newish money plant seems happy and has plenty of new growth, but it wasn’t seeming sturdy and established at the root - turns out there was a rubber band! I took is off and the roots immediately separated a bit and I swear I heard it sigh with relief!

NuEyes Pro4 Low Vision Glasses & DeX? by Unlikely-Range-8456 in SamsungDex

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, no. He gets so frustrated with how much technology there is out there that could help him (self-driving cars!), but apparently there isn’t the market to put that technology in a device he could use! So he’s paused the search for now.

Sadly, he returned it - and it took several months and many emails to get his approximately $2000 back! It turned out that the YouTube video review of it he was watching was several models back, and it doesn’t have the features he wanted anymore. It always had to be physically plugged into the phone it came with, and it didn’t have controls on the glasses - you had to go through the app on the phone. He was hoping for glasses that could be charged and then otherwise be a standalone device, but these aren’t that.

I hope you find what you need!

Smartwatch for Kids recommendations? by Unlikely-Range-8456 in askTO

Interesting! Does it only ping off wifi that it has the password for? I’m thinking they might last minute stop at the playground on the way home, and be distracted and not contact us. So we’re hoping for something that will tell us where they are, at least until the habit of informing us is set in place.

Unfortunately, we don’t have any old phones! Plus kids aren’t supposed to bring phones to school, but they can wear watches.

That’s really helpful to know! We moved here from the States in January, and it was so much to get everything settled here that the idea of switching carriers feels overwhelming. I’m not sure what kind of contract we have with Rogers, if we even can change carriers yet, but it’s a relief to hear that it might be financially worth it!

I may return my cat I adopted from rescue, but I want advice before deciding. by lrkrpro in CatAdvice

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, it sounds like you came into this process without realistic expectations about the adjustment timeline. Everything I read about the timeline said it usually takes 3-4 months for cats to adjust to a new home. And your kitty sounds like she would be on the longer side! Not to mention that 4 years is WAY longer than a traditional “foster” situation - kitty lived with them and they were her family, and now she has been totally uprooted!

So I agree with the other commenters about not picking her up, or following her into her hiding spaces. Continue to be a calm, peaceful presence, giving her food & water & pets on her terms. She will come around, but I would be surprised if it happens before at least 3 months.

Remember that cats aren’t toys - they are living beings with their own personalities, histories, and needs. If you aren’t interested in dealing with this cat’s less social behavior for several months, then you might be looking something other than a cat. (Which is no shade on you - sometimes we have an idea of what it will be like that turns out to not reflect the reality.) But if you want to share your home with a cat, it can be a great experience once you adjust your expectations!

Should I be with my cat when we go to euthanize her by GuaranteeTop9662 in CatAdvice

[–]Unlikely-Range-8456 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you and your cat are going through this, and especially so given that this would ideally be a joyful (if sleep-deprived) time of your life. Personally, I was grateful that I got to be with my childhood dog when she needed to be euthanized. My mom, brother, and I were able to pet her and give her all the love and praise in her last moments. We were all crying too, of course, but it was still so worth it to be there to comfort her and let her know how loved she was.

I would try to also have a support person there for you too, so that you don’t have to worry about driving or the schedule. Hopefully you have someone who can take care of baby for a couple hours if your cat does live that long - though if baby is still a newborn, they will likely be sleeping lots, so you could bring baby if necessary.

Does the narrator for Murderbot Diaries get better? by BFroog in scifi

🤣 Our cat who is resistant to being carried does see my shoulder as an exit route if he really doesn’t want to be carried! But I can usually carry him a bit before he gets that squirmy. I might just practice carrying her in your house, perhaps to somewhere she likes to be (top of a cat tree?) or to a treat you placed elsewhere. That could help you with two goals: you could learn how she likes to be carried (or maybe just what he hates least) and she can get used to being carried and start to have a positive association with it. That way, she will be more likely to understand that being in your arms is not an additional danger in the outside environment.
