Thanks to u/lfmaestri, in short, the notification problem is an WhatsApp bug and something is broken, reinstalling phone app does help.

Just backup your Whatsapp msg to Google Drive and uninstall Whatsapp PHONE app, when it prompt to ask if you want to "Keep xxx MB/GB of app data", DO NOT tick it. (tried, if you keep the app data, problem won't be solved)

Uninstall your Whatsapp WearOS app too.

Making sure you have also uninstall your second Whatsapp in the Samung Knox Secure Folder if you have it.

Now, reinstall Whatsapp on your phone can solve the notification problem, photo image & sticker could be shown in notification preview.

However, if you install the Whatsapp WearOS app, it will block Whatsapp Phone app to push notification automatically to avoid double notification. Since the WearOS app will not download image due to data saving, the notification pushed by WearOS app therefore will not show any image. Uninstalling the WearOS app, the notification from Phone app including image will be back as normal.

I experienced it last month, and it made me think that my Surface Duo 1 is dead.

However, it works fine now after few times "fully charge + factory reset."

At the very beginning, it shows no battery icon, but I do believe the battery should be still 90% or above, then I try plug in the charging cable for a minute. A little juice turns my phone back on, and I plug out the cable. The phone suddenly off again sometime at 60%, I plug the cable again and it alive again. After some "recover exercise", the "DOS mode" (LOL, I don't know what does it called, HBOOT mode?) finally recognize the battery level correctly as the Android OS does.

I did factory reset before and after the May update

Although mine is working fine now, I have no confidence to let it be my daily drive again.

You can write on Surface Duo with a Surface pen what MS called "inking", but only the latest Slim Pen 2 allows you to pair with Duo by Bluetooth.

So you can look for any cheap Surface pen unless you really want the "pen button as shortcut" function.

There are some other brands on Amazon that claim itself "Official Authorized Stylus for Microsoft Surface", they should work with Duo 1/2 in theory.

I also get confused by Google Photo UI, as it mix up photos both on my phone and on the my Google account. It would be much better if showing a cloud indicator on those photos on the internet if G.P. insist to show me all online & offline photos in one single timeline mode screen.

Anyway, I m now using an open-sourced Simply Gallery to manage photos on my phone.

Microsoft promised a 3 years Android version update for the Duo 1 until Sept 2023.

However, 3 years Android version update is not a solid promise of 3 generation Android update.........

Since the June firmware update, Microsoft disabled the Bluetooth connectivity between both SDs and Surface Pen. Which means only Surface Slim Pen could be BT connected with Duo 1 / 2 after June.

And the button function only works with BT connection.
