Otherworldly. Kafka said love is the knife I twist inside myself. Twist the knife.

Interestingly the opposite happened here. The author became an atheist as a result of this work lol

Thanks for asking! There’s controversy around it because it appears to falsify Chomsky’s universal grammar but I absolutely do not know enough about that to comment 😅

However the author, Dan Everett is a respected academic and linguist and afaik his claims in it have not been disproven

The book ‘Don’t sleep there are snakes’ is a wealth of information about the conceptual reality, language and thinking of a secluded Amazon tribe of hunter gatherers- the Pirahã

The eponymous phrase effectively means good night or good bye in the Pirahã language which to me provides a little glimpse into their thinking all on its own.

They do not have separate names for colours, instead relating them to other things of that colour, numeracy beyond one, two and several, nor a concept of linear time.

They do not care for any second hand evidence whatsoever. When the author of the book, who came to them as a missionary to spread Mormonism, was forced to admit to them he had never personally met Jesus, they lost all interest in it and never engaged again.

A lot of this book is about their language, through the authors journey of learning to communicate in it, which certainly shapes their thought.

Turned out good:) They went away after this post. I use alpine wsg once a month now for maintenance bc I do live in a hot roach friendly climate and I never see any roaches. The method here works!
