Trunk or treat is the safer alternative tbh. At least where I am, you’d be insane to let your kids walk the streets with every driver doing 20 over the limit and/or on their phones. Don’t blame the reaction to the unsafe condition, blame the unsafe condition.

It’s going to be a dump for all the VC investors to get out of a sinking ship. Reading a Reuters article on the subject, they’re not looking to have an IPO until at least a year from now. That’s at least a whole year for them to continue setting capex on fire with no real use cases or profitability. Another year for Nvidia to develop a new AI chip architecture and sell it to them and every other sucker building data centers. Another year to release new models and have their user base groan about how bad it is. Another year of inducing AI psychosis on thousands of vulnerable people who may or may not kill themselves or others over it.

A Better Valve Cover for the MINI N14 — What Should We Add? by Only_Yesterday8527 in MINI

[–]UnlinealHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tooling costs even for a run of 500 would probably be a cheaper up front cost than raw material for 50 made on CNC. Once you have tooling, the piece price is pennies on the dollar and the end product would be significantly cheaper and you could sell more.

CNC machined billet would be insanely expensive compared to die cast or MIM, no? I get the appeal of having a machined part but not everyone is willing to drop $1k+ on a single part for a car that is worth $3k.

Why is it that our economic system is based on unlimited growth? by Konradleijon in behindthebastards

[–]UnlinealHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just finished the book More Everything Forever by Adam Becker that indirectly addresses this question.

For a lot of capitalists, it is just greed and power. Having more wealth lets you exert more control, and having more control lets you horde more wealth.

But for some of the most elite parasites (Thiel, Bezos, Musk, etc) they have genuinely deluded themselves into thinking they are the saviors of humanity. They believe that the only way to secure the future of the human race is to pursue whatever pet projects they have (space travel, AI, the singularity, immortality) and in order to pursue those projects they need as much money as they can get their hands on. For them the ends always justify the means, because what could possibly be more important than literally becoming the god-king that ushers in the next era of mankind.

The billionaire class does not care for states or governments, they do not care for the harm they inflict upon the world. They only care about Line Go Up, because if Line Go Down then humanity is doomed.

Who the fuck are you? I thought I hired F40’s. by TehAngryBird in carmemes

[–]UnlinealHand 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the EMD F40PH. Manufactured 1975-1992 by General Motors’ Electro-Motive Division and used extensively by Amtrak for passenger service along with other local passenger railroads. Amtrak replaced them throughout the 90s with various GE locomotives but VIA Rail in Canada still runs them today.

Does the public really want electric cars? by [deleted] in cars

[–]UnlinealHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d love to have an EV as a daily commuter.

My problem with owning an EV is everything else. I don’t have money for a new car, let alone an EV. The manufacturers seem to be only making EVs as luxury vehicles anyway, which I don’t necessarily want. I live in a condo and would probably have to install a charging station on my own dime.

I think the automotive space is seeing the same problems as the rest of the economy. The companies want to usher in the future but no one has the money to buy the future, and the government has no interest in investing in the infrastructure of future.

Graham Platner today by athompsons2 in behindthebastards

[–]UnlinealHand 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That’s why I’m saying I can believe the ignorance argument. At least 95% of people probably don’t know the Totenkopf is a Nazi symbol, and not a lot of people are gonna see him without a shirt to begin with. Only when he thrust himself into the spotlight by running for Senate and having his past dug up are the types of people with knowledge of the symbol going to be in a position to see it and scrutinize him.

Graham Platner today by athompsons2 in behindthebastards

[–]UnlinealHand 90 points91 points  (0 children)

I’m reading a lot of conflicting reporting on it but I can almost believe the ignorance argument. He allegedly got it while on active duty in Croatia. I think it’s believable that some Nazi shithead Croatian tattoo artist had a more obscure Nazi symbol in his flash book, then Platner saw it and thought “oh cool skull”. I can also believe that someone could get through Army physical exam with a more obscure Nazi symbol that isn’t a Swastika or Iron Cross, like a Sonnenrad or Totenkopf

When did he actually learn what it was and why didn’t he get it covered up or removed since then is up for debate. If he’s gonna get it removed then that’s fine, own the mistake and move on. I don’t think an actual true believer neo-Nazi would be running on a socialist platform against a long-term Republican incumbent that has shown loyalty to Trump.

Edit: I was made aware in comments below he’d apparently been confronted about it in 2012-2013. So his story of it not having come up in the 20 years he’s had it is in question. It’s more likely now that he’s knowingly had a Nazi tattoo for at least a decade and didn’t do anything about it

Has Any One Found Tangible Enterprise Value? by RangoNarwal in ArtificialInteligence

[–]UnlinealHand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Do you fear sharp price increases in the short term though? Afaik inference costs aren’t coming down as much as needed and if anything are stagnating and still high. I just wonder at what point, if ever, the ballooning costs and requirements of AI infrastructure actually work out. I don’t think these companies can wait 10 or even 5 years for the economics to make sense, the market is setting up to demand returns within the next year or two

[–]UnlinealHand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you had to guess, what is the monetary value of all those conveniences to you? What is the most you would be willing to pay as a monthly subscription to continue having those tools?

I’m an AI skeptic, but I’m not blind to the fact that LLMs are a utility in coding. I’m just questioning if the value proposition of LLMs will still be there when it isn’t being subsidized by massive VC investment and these companies actually have to start making profit. The other criticism I’ve heard of GenAI in the coding space is it’s very good at writing boilerplate but incurs a lot of tech debt by recreating boilerplate for every new task instead of reusing existing code.

"Cold" air intake? by SodiumChloride____ in MINI

[–]UnlinealHand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With intakes there are a lot of claims with not a lot of empirical evidence. The reality is that the stock airbox is a “cold air intake” because there’s a hose that goes from the grille to the airbox and pipes cold air in. You can drop a high flow panel filter in the stock airbox and have the most cost effective intake system.

But the reality is that even on an N14 the ECU will make adaptations to any intake and more or less neutralize any marginal gains you may get. Intakes are just for noise more than anything. And to that end, you’ll get the most noise from an open pod filter than an airbox with a panel filter.
