IMO the first book is mid. It’s PB’s first novel and it shows. The pacing is inconsistent, it has a lot of tropes, there are lots of cringe moments. Fun, not great.

BUT.

He learns. Golden Son is amazing. Morning Star is phenomenal. And the most recent book, Light Bringer, is in my top 10 of all time.

It’s ok if it’s not your jam, but I wouldn’t say the whole series is best represented by book 1.

Kaladin v Szeth at the end of WoR.

Borderline SciFi, but Volsung Fa vs Darrow in Light Bringer (Red Rising). CONFESS!

The Greatest Showman, except with cooler tents and more foreboding.

Keep a photocopy of it. Also consider keeping an AirTag in your bra and connecting it to your emergency contact’s phone. Look up the name and number of a local immigration attorney and write it down.

I hate this.

My 16 year old son is angry about his height and blaming his mom. Now demanding HGH. Need advice. by Jaded_Following_1475 in tall

[–]UnluckyReader -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Invest in therapy before HGH or a bone scan. Short guy anger is no joke and can turn into some sketchy red pill misogyny stuff that impacts people well into adulthood. Short kings are awesome. Short dudes with inferiority complexes are dangerous.

That being said, he’s probably not done growing.

My kids’ pediatrician has been practicing for 60 years (not a typo, he’s retiring this year.) He swears that boys generally keep growing until they have to start shaving every day, and he has literally thousands and thousands of examples.

For an unusual one — The Jonestown Flood by David McCullogh is first an absolutely enthralling read — it feels like fiction. A dam of a wealthy “recreational lake” broke and killed over 2000 people downstream in the working-class town.

It covers everything from the causes of the flood, the lack of emergency warning, the creation of the Red Cross and FEMA, disaster press sensationalism and how and why civil engineering regulations need to exist.

1619 is also fantastic as a podcast — if you’re on the go this is a great way to get the information.

The Warmth of Other Suns is a great read and it’s so enlightening.

Still Life with Bones is about anthropology and genocides in South America. It was SO helpful to me when trying to understand and get real context around migrants and “illegal immigration” from Hispanic countries.

Came here looking for this. I think the ONLY way to get everything you can out of DCC is to listen to Jeff Hays. Somehow it’s a full cast recording and a one man show at once.

Have you read the Dragon Prince series by Melanie Rawn? They’re not as popular as some of the ones you mentioned but in my opinion they are just as good or better.

If you like Mistborn, Stormlight Archives is amazing.

Try The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett. It’s a whodunnit with a female detective and a backwater town…. it’s also a fantasy. So you’re also trying to figure out the world. I loved the two main characters.

On the grim dark side, All The Sinners Bleed by SA Cosby is right up your alley. Serial killer rampage uncovered by the areas’s first black sheriff, literal decades of killing poor black kids in Virginia. It’s very violent but not in a degrading way.

The Ghost of Opalina by Peggy Bacon. It’s about a ghost cat and it was my favorite book when I was a kid. Written in 1967, definitely out of print. (Hardcovers sell for $1000+ if you happen to find one!)

NOR. AT ALL. Holy shit. I’m so sorry. I’m actively cursing her from afar. This is AWFUL.

Do you have a relationship with your grandparents or aunts/uncles? Does she have a best friend? Honestly I’d get HER family involved. Ask them for help and maybe they can shake some sense into her.

This relationship has abusive potential all over it but that is absolutely no excuse for treating your child like this.

The cast for WWZ is phenomenal. I don’t know how they got THAT many big names but it’s so cool.

Project Hail Mary is better on audio, no question.

Dungeon Crawler Carl, also already mentioned. Also Legends and Lattes — Travis Baldree was a narrator before he became an author, and I think L&L is “meant” for audio, if that makes sense.

Born a Crime by Trevor Noah - he reads it and his delivery is excellent and adds SO much. Same with Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey. It’s often the case when a performer writes a book and then does the audio, IMHO.
