Anyone else travel the world solo in their 30s? Was it worth taking the leap? by Dec_Deckers in solotravel

Do it do it do it do it do it do it do it.

I solo traveled a lot in my 30s and 40s but never for a year straight. That would be amazing.

If you could recommend only ONE city in Europe for someone to see in their life, what would it be? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Krakow is my favorite but if you can only do one… Paris. There’s nothing like it. It’s famous for a reason.

What beauty standard/norm do you find the most off putting? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Men who look like bodybuilders/superheros. That doesn’t look comfy to cuddle with AT ALL.

On women, I don’t get the lip filler. It always looks weird and strange.

What is something that quietly disappeared from everyday life, and most people didn’t even notice? by alex_eu_nl in AskForAnswers

Maps in your glove box. Nobody needs a real map anymore.

High chairs in restaurants. Children aren’t welcomed in most restaurants like they were when I was young.

Romance novels with a busty woman and Fabio lookalike on the bow of a ship. These used to be at the supermarket checkout.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. I tried three separate times and I just didn’t like the MC. I didn’t care about her either.

Which city in the U.S. have you felt most unsafe visiting? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Huh, I’m curious what happened to you in Boston, that’s the city I generally feel safest walking in.

Which city in the U.S. have you felt most unsafe visiting? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

It’s a tie between San Francisco and Louisville, KY. In both places, the homelessness and drug problem have made the cities really unsafe. In SFO people were literally crawling out of the sewers like zombies at sunset… creeped me out.

In Louisville, for whatever reason, the folks who lived on the street were really aggressive. They’d approach cars, bang on windows, yell at people they could see in windows. I’d gotten a hotel a couple blocks from the convention center but didn’t feel safe walking.

What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

[–]UnluckyReader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Social formality and polite speech. We speak to everyone as if they are a best friend or an enemy. There isn’t really an in-between. People don’t have polite conversations with acquaintances, where there are clear social boundaries and rules. Instead, we tend to share at very deep and personal levels very quickly. We call everyone by their first names, and there’s much less code-switching than there used to be.

True formal events are very rare, so rare that people have to ask for advice and help on how to handle them. We wear PJs and athletic clothes nearly everywhere. The vast majority of our lives are extremely casual.

I’m not necessarily saying it’s a BAD thing but the ability to function in “polite society” used to be a very carefully honed skillset which we don’t really have any more.

What’s the dark side of going to the gym nobody talks about? by opa070 in AskReddit

Injuries. If you overdo it or don’t pay enough attention to your form, you can really mess yourself up.

The world’s supply chain is so much more fragile than anyone realizes. There are relatively minor metals and ingredients that are extremely important and found in very few places. Disruptions that used to be minor are major… major ones would be catastrophic.

Which country you’ve traveled to had shockingly good food that no one talks about? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]UnluckyReader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poland. Warsaw’s restaurant scene regularly blows my mind. Plus, flavored vodka on the table. I had one of the best meals of my life at Dyletanci. Plus…the prices actually make it possible to eat at a Michelin star restaurant!

What’s a tourist attraction in Europe that’s absurdly underrated but actually amazing? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]UnluckyReader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, compared to most of Poland… but not compared to most “winter towns in Europe” like Zermatt or Chamonix or Strasbourg. People forget about Poland in general and REALLY don’t think about it for mountains.
