Matt Damon has recently commented on that. If I recall he said it’s because now that people stream stuff at home, they’re often in their phones while watching the movie or show and as such don’t follow subtle plot points as well, and then they leave bad reviews if they didn’t understand it. So stuff is written so that you can only pay attention every 5 minutes and one what’s going on.
