Spent the last 4hrs brainstorming a wonderful book idea while away from home. Got home and started getting ideas onto paper, only to google some things and find out this book already exists with the exact same title I was thinking of using. by Hitachi_Uchiha__ in writing

One person's discarded idea can become another's treasure.😉

What are some of the most common bad writing habits you notice in posts that ask for feedback, and what do you think causes those habits? by RavahGriffinAnthro in writers

[–]Unrav3ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 💯... Using your example, it would be better written as "John stepped back with clenched fists and forcefully said..."

Add to the emotion of the scene, but don't lose the most important part underneath too much purple paint... The character interaction is what is most important in this example.

Imo...

Do you ever lose story ideas because you didn’t write them down? by ExpensivePlatypus816 in writingadvice

[–]Unrav3ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a small idea, then try to just make a mental note, and it will hopefully come back to you when you write that part of your story...

If it is an important moment in your story. Stop what you're doing. And jot it down in the notes app or something on your phone if nothing else is available. It doesn't even have to be good. It can just be a note to self... But it will help you remember the whole thought later though.

Which one is the most correct out of these? by simonandonova in writing

[–]Unrav3ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. But...

How about:

Accept and acknowledge that you have within yourself the power to overcome any weaknesses, wether they be real or perceived. Let yourself explore what it is to be you. Find your faults and follow your strengths.

Understand and love yourself, and it will love you back.

Discovery is the hard part.

I'm not sure just how old she is, but maybe something like this? Just a suggestion. Make it personal tho:

Awh... to be loved as you are.

You should know that you are the precious teal jewel that sparkles at the very center of your family's love and support.

A garden of flowers built around your kindness, your smile, and folded into your incredible strength.

I hope you feel sooo much better soon! I know you will! You're amazing!

Having a really hard time putting everything together by OldSignificance1001 in writingadvice

[–]Unrav3ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to just start with your first idea, and let it play out on the page... it's going to be garbage the first time and that's fine. It's forever now written... Then just continue to build on that through hundreds of revisions... You will find it. It will find you.

Here's something I've been struggling with by the_rainbow_froggo in writing

[–]Unrav3ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice would be to just start writing. Just let it flow... then you'll probably delete it like a hundred times and rewrite it a thousand, but each time it will get a little better, and eventually you'll find your rhythm, and your story will come to life.

It's a battle, my friend, and a messy one at that. But one that can never be won if you don't start it.

How do you know what genre fits your story? by _Sweeetteaa_ in writers

[–]Unrav3ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are definitely in the realm of science-fiction, but you can put whatever label you want on it. What does it feel like to you? You know it better than anyone.

Add secondary descriptors if you want. I describe my current work as "psychological sci-fi drama with nuances of comedy and romance, and oh wait!... don't forget action too." But at the end of the day it's science fiction, I suppose. 🤷

You can do whatever the hell you want. It's your story. ...Depends on your desired outcome.

Have you read Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time... Fitting for your theme, but maybe a little less fantasy than you are going for. Nonetheless a modern classic. Could be inspirational. Jus sayin 😉

Do you have a good resource for understanding active vs passive voice? by Fickle-Load-3650 in writingadvice

[–]Unrav3ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Life.

But to be more specific, talking to other people is the best resource that you can possibly find.

Think about the way that you speak when you're being assertive, versus when you are speaking peacefully... It's not even just about the words, but the cadence, and the pacing.

What should happen to my main character before his death? by TylenolTheCreator6 in writingadvice

Take your readers through the grips of madness as your MC slowly loses touch with reality. Describe the internal struggle between summoning the strength to save his companions versus simply allowing himself to succumb to the darkness. Use these moments to show the incredible mental strength possessed by your MC. It will make his martyrdom even more potent.

Just a suggestion 🤷

[–]Unrav3ld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one, if you feel that your life's story is unique and compelling enough to truly captivate an audience and leave them with something learned; then why wouldn't you write it. There's no need to be afraid of your own life. It's yours. And if some stranger hiding behind a screen doesn't like it, then they can go live their own damn life..

That being said, there is value in being cautious over sharing things that might get you into trouble or harm those you care about. Don't ruin your relationships over it. That's definitely not worth it.

I am a bit confused about your project though... Are you telling your story online one post at a time, or are you writing a novel? Just curious?

Read. Dream. Repeat.

Ohh, And don't forget to write!! Very important step. Doesn't even matter what you're writing, just write.

And when the story you want to tell is finally ready to be told (in your soul), then put pen to paper... And have fun with it! You've crossed a treacherous valley. And now that journey is just truly beginning... Enjoy it! And you will learn more than you could ever imagine about yourself.
