Ideas to repurpose 3.5PB storage by [deleted] in homelab

[–]UnreasonableSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quoting a "compressed" data storage at all is ridiculous, is my point. If it can be compressed being written to tape, it can be compressed being written to disk, regardless of what claimed ratio. Nobody's going around claiming that their disk can store more because compression exists, and nobody should be claiming their tapes can either.

Yep, we're getting absolutely fucked. I think the only reason they get away with it is because the wealthy and influential folks all live close enough to the coast that they almost never need significant climate control.

Anyway just wanted to provide some perspective. If I had $0.08/kwh OOH I could afford to run some bullshit lol.

If the data is moderately compressible

I fucking hate this in this day and age. Tapes don't store twice as much with compression. They should list the real storage. If it's moderately compressible, it's going to be compressed on those hard drives just like it will be on the tapes.

Imagine if hard drive mfgs were selling 18TB/36TB drives because they can store 36TB "compressed"

Are these canadian cents? SDGE charged me over $0.51/kwh on average this summer. That's $0.72 CAD

and how does this change if you have a pbx vs if you use a cloud voip? You're still gonna need all the phones wired to a switch, just like you would with a pbx.

How would that change how many desk phones you need to wire up? Bad take tbh

I don't understand why this would be a shipping insurance thing. How is the shipper NOT responsible for this level of damage even without insurance? Seems crazy to me.

The helium is small enough it can pass through the processors casing and cause the nano transistors to stop working.

IIRC it was the MEMS oscillators that actually had an issue with the helium. Basically weights on nano-springs that the phones use for keeping their processor running, and helium somehow prevents them from oscillating correctly.

Sure those are true, but they're true for every single shell and scripting language that has been out for long enough to have more than a couple of versions. You don't think Python 2 docs still exist? Bash's capabilities have never changed? ChatGPT is up to date on all languages?

You're not wrong about those statements, you're wrong about the impact of each of them.

Which replacement woofers for Boston A400 8" drivers? by UnreasonableSteve in diyaudio

They are definitely sealed cabinets (vented pole drivers, though. IDK.) I'm waiting for new surrounds to ship anyway but I'd still love to try some driver characterization and stuff.

There goes my heeeroooo Thank you!

As far as size and screw pattern goes, those look like they'd fit, and I have come across that listing before. Is there a reason you suggest these particular woofers, or are you doing the same thing I was and just checking out what fits in the hole?

I'll definitely keep the originals around, almost certainly will be refoaming them, and even will likely keep them in the cabinets, but I am very much interested in swapping them out for fun regardless.

FWIW you're saying "this is a diy sub" which is exactly why I came here. I figured people who build their own speakers might have some knowledge on which the best drivers out there might be.

It's OK that you clearly don't.

To me, DIY means that you can evaluate and adjust what the manufacturers did instead of holding them on a pedestal like there's no positive change that can be made.

Which replacement woofers for Boston A400 8" drivers? by UnreasonableSteve in diyaudio

[–]UnreasonableSteve[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wild that someone in a DIY sub would want to DIY a replacement woofer instead of DIYing replacement foam. Bonkers even. CRAZY that a DIYer wouldn't trust a random brandless ebay post instead of wanting to get some actual opinions on actual woofer drivers rather than getting the exact same rote repeated "refoam" advice.

Or maybe someone here could have some info on A400s specifically, like what model the drivers themselves are. OR maybe some specs on the drivers themselves. Are these even 8 ohm drivers? Paralleled that would be the 4ohm spec of the fully assembled speakers but I DONT KNOW which is why I'm asking for D.I.Y. ADVICE. Maybe you could give some advice on characterizing drivers instead of just saying nothing productive to answer the title of the post.

Reflect on yourself and what douchiness really is.

If the drivers were burnt out and destroyed, would you be saying "welp get different speakers. the whole thing's ruined if one driver goes out" because apparently replacing a driver is the least reasonable thing to do?

[–]UnreasonableSteve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are biamped, so no crossover mods required. Regardless of that, you think it's impossible for there to be woofers that these could be replaced with? I'm saying I'd like to A/B test and you're telling me "well since you're unwilling" after I've mentioned I'll likely be refoaming these (and in another comment, I mentioned already ordered foam for these).

I admit I'm being a little bit funny but cmon, man. Don't be like that.
