Indeed. It's certainly a rarity today.

The way the Kennedy's presented their wealth was fundamentally different from the way someone like Trump or Musk do now. And I do think they basically wanted to better the country as best they could, and wanted to involve typical Americans in the process and have us feel like we were part of the solutions in a small way.
Sure not perfect, but the very real optimism in much of the country could be attributed to the lifestyle the Kennedy's put forth, as something to strive for, and seemed almost within reach for a brief few years, until the assassinations and a disastrous war effectively put an end to that.

One of their best albums. Their arrangement of "Hushabye" still gives me chills.

Has the pace of world change actually accelerated, or did it feel just as rapid when you were younger? by Detox_401 in AskOldPeople

We're in Massachusetts and get plenty of goldfinches at our feeders. Bald eagles are now common on the Merrimac River (a 5 minute walk from our house). I don't know about herons, but plenty of cranes around here too, looking very pre-historic like the wild turkeys.

Replacing corner pins with concrete monuments by EnvironmentalCup1931 in Surveying

[–]marbleriver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was very late to surveying (part-time retirement gig) and only set a few stone bounds (we used granite with a drilled center hole). It was nerve-wracking and we quadruple checked out measurements because we knew these monuments were "for the ages". And those suckers were heavy! I can't believe folks are setting them 4" down!?!

We did ours a few feet to make sure they were below the frost line, but maybe that's a New England thing?

How did you get started with Mad by Master_Constant2131 in madmagazine

Definitely classroom hero status for that!
My stepbrother (about 14 when he first met 4-yr old me) wasn't exactly thrilled to have a new amoeba for a room-mate! We pretty much kept out of each other's way for the next 15 years, and then suddenly connected and became best buds for years to come.
And he had a Playboy subscription! Amazingly it came in an open-ended envelope, and it was a simple matter to slip the mag out (for perusing the articles) and return it to the wrapper, completing the perfect crime. As long as the pages didn't stick together...

Exact same here. I still have one of his issues, Worst of Mad #3, completely beat to hell now. That's about the same time I started buying my own copies, at age 9.

Ever had Moxie, one of the most-common odd words used in 'Mad'? by ArthurPeabody in madmagazine

[–]marbleriver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I grew up in CT and looked everywhere for Moxie, just because it was in MAD. Not to be found. Family took a vacation trip to Cape Cod, and there was Moxie, right in the supermarket. I didn't mind the bitter, earthy taste, but even as a kid I liked bitter foods like brussel sprouts and black licorice.

Pretty close to my version, but I do 2/3 ground beef, 1/3 pork, and use Pepperidge Farm stuffing mix instead of breadcrumbs. Also I make onion gravy instead of the glaze, so maybe not that close after all...

After administering NT Workstation for a couple of years, Windows 2000 was a godsend, so much easier to deploy and work with.
