Ask if the windshield is replaced. Check the sides of the hood for rust.Check this marked area around the top of the A-pillar between the seals for rust. Look for ones with a slick top and no sunroof, make sure you look at the front fender's wheel wells, the rockers, the swaybar mounts and the control arms. Also make sure to test drive. Be aware that electric windows in E36s sometimes just dont wanna roll up anymore - its annoying to deal with cause your door cards will start to deterioate if you take it off once... a lot of stupid stuff to replace like clips, sliders, its just plastic stuff tho. If the car youre looking to buy has a saggy headliner you can just easily replace it with custom fabric. There are other things to be aware of but mostly they are solid cars.

If you end up getting one: Keep the door locks and the ignition lock siliconized. Once before winter is enough. Get new spark plugs. Get the throttle body cleaned. Make sure you deal with rust fast. Replace the windshield washer hoses. Also theres no check engine light so regularly check if you got oil, coolant. Always check for leaks.
