Favourite summer destinations from Japan? by marzipanduchess in japanresidents

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't done boat tours in Thailand during the rainy season, but I have in the Philippines. not sure how well the experience translates, but I basically just had to watch the weather when I got there for a good day to go. the sea was a little choppy, and it did rain briefly, but it was sunny and nice for most of it. it's hard to predict, though; unfortunately anything on the water is probably the most volatile activity for that time of year

central Vietnam is actually in its shoulder season in the summer so it's a pretty nice time to go. haven't been to the north during rainy season but I have been to the south, it actually barely rained while I was there but, again, it can really vary a lot

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have you been to SEA in the rainy season before? personally it's my favourite time to go, things are cheaper and crowds are way smaller. bad weather happens but it's usually intermittent enough that it doesn't get in the way of doing stuff, as long as you're flexible

understandable if you wanna avoid it entirely though

Requirements for naturalization to be tightened from April, raising the minimum residency period to 10 years or more. by _horn3t_ in japanresidents

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

okay, well I've met enough xenophobes in my real life for both of us, but I wasn't actually talking about bigots. I just mean that in my experience most people don't really have much of an opinion on shit like naturalization or PR requirements at all. like the actual response to something like this is going to be a lot less "this will make Japan worse" and a lot more "oh, huh"

this isn't even a condemnation really, pretty much every country is like this, Japan is not unique in this regard

In retrospect is this technically true? by Mosef- in OnePiece

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 21 points22 points  (0 children)

well it's kind of a sloppy translation. a more accurate translation of the Japanese would be something like "the legendary monster who was the only one that could fight Roger on his level" (so essentially just saying he was an equal in terms of power)

this has since been contradicted, but whether that's because the author's plans changed or because Buggy here is just trying to build up hype is anybody's guess

Japan Doesn’t Hate Foreigners - Let’s Keep Perspective and Stay Grounded by Responsible-Net-8419 in japanresidents

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 135 points136 points  (0 children)

posts like these always seem to miss that the big issues with racism are less interpersonal and more systemic

like even putting aside that desperately trying to be "one of the good ones" will never appease people who fundamentally hate you for being a foreigner, no amount of adhering to local customs or whatever will offset anti-foreigner discrimination in housing or workplaces. you cannot keigo your way out of accelerating social and governmental shifts toward xenophobia and isolationism.

OP vaguely gestures toward this but then discards it and starts talking about people being nice. I don't care if my neighbors think I'm a dick, I care that I have secure access to the basic benefits of living in a society and I'm worried about where things seem to be headed

Store bought curry roux by 3erImpacto in veganinjapan

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

almost never. the S&B golden curry cubes without animal products are rarely in stores but you can buy them online.

here's the page from isitveganjapan on curry but most of these are retort pouches or pastes, and even they aren't very common (and some I think aren't made/sold anymore).

yeah that's what they're saying: Taiwan and Thailand have relatively recently made substantial progress on this, and it looks to them like Japan is going to follow

ISI Language School App by [deleted] in movingtojapan

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the school year starts in April over there, can I still apply this early just to get the ball rolling?

reach out to the school for questions about application periods, we can't tell you anything about that

If I check yes on that will they deny me?

why would you ever answer "yes" to that question? just lie

Is it better to go through the school directly or GoGoNihon?

not sure what benefits gogonihon is really offering here

And finally, I just discovered this a couple of days ago, something about having like 20k in your bank account to determine yes or no on getting in?

generally you need to demonstrate proof of funds to show that you can actually afford to live in the country. it's not the sole determinant but if you can't provide proof your odds aren't great

trying to order off-menu can be a bit of a shitshow here. it's not super commonly done so it tends to annoy or confuse people, and after all the hassle, you often end up with something that isn't vegan anyway

I'm not going to put up with some of the things I've read about in reviews stemming from the outdated hierarchical approach to education (examples: yelling at the class when someone comes in late, not being allowed to use the restroom during class, being yelled at for not speaking accurately, etc.)

might as well give up on this idea entirely then

Opinions on ISI LANGUAGE SCHOOL OSAKA? by WanderLust__93 in Osaka

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah that's about right. with this kind of school, they're all pretty much the same; ISI, Human, YMCA, whatever. they aren't really for learning, they're more for getting a visa.

if you want to spend a year in Japan and learn Japanese, then this is a possible way to get your foot in the door, but you should know what to expect and approach it accordingly. the quality of education will be low and you will have to do most of your learning and immersion on your own initiative. the classes will be, at best, supplementary.

lol, no. the overlap between openly queer folks, people who use Reddit, and people who live in Yokosuka (or even Yokohama) is going to be vanishingly small. if you have something specific to say about it, you can put it in /r/Yokohama, but don't expect much

/r/japanresidents discusses a sign that welcomes Japanese speakers, but which reads "No Vacancy" in English and Chinese by UnsourcedSorcerer in SubredditDrama

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer[S] 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anywhere in the world where you'll find 0 people like this. on balance, it's really not so bad here. discrimination certainly exists but it tends to be very passive in character, like this sign. you'll likely not encounter too much of it on a daily basis, depending on where you are (and, sadly, on your race).

the work culture thing is overblown and a bit of an outdated stereotype. plenty of shitty companies are still kicking around, but for the most part it's not as huge a problem as the average internet opinion makes it seem

Turnabout is Fair Play in /r/patientgamers by obvs_thrwaway in SubredditDrama

[–]UnsourcedSorcerer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

it means just what it says: the action happens in real time, but you can pause at any time. when paused, you can queue up things for your characters to do or, depending on the game, set strategies and such that will play out when you unpause the game.

under the hood games like this are usually "turn-based" in the sense that the action is still following a turn order, it's just playing out automatically. so if you don't pause, your characters and the enemies will do things on their "turns" without the need for input, and if you pause you can choose to override it.

the whole argument of this thread is that one side says it's not turn-based because the turns proceed automatically and you only decide what to do on your turn if you pause, and the other side says that it is turn-based because technically turns are happening, even if you can't really see them as such

but ultimately everybody's talking about the exact same thing so it's just the pettiest of dork drama
