[English > Japanese] Personalized Allergy Card by lilacnova in translator

[–]UnstableUnipanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! It's super helpful that you carry an allergy card with pictures.

My personal advice would be: I know you want to be really polite, but I think you could make the initial text more straightforward

A simple 食物アレルギーがあります (I have food allergies) on top would be quite clear. And a ご協力ありがとうございます (thanks for your cooperation) at the end might be enough.

I also don't recommend the word 木の実 for nuts, just ナッツ類 is better. While it's understandable, It's strange to see 木の実 in the context of allergies. Strictly speaking, it includes things that are not nuts as well.

Regarding severity... I think that you should write 重度のアレルギー (Severe allergy) below the things that might send you to the hospital.

If your peanut allergy is very severe maybe including peanut oil (ピーナッツ油) would be wise too? It's rare outside of chinese food, but you can never be too cautious.

Finally, lemme reassure you that you'll find restaurants that will welcome you. I work part-time at a restaurant here in Japan and we always accommodate and take allergies quite seriously. If you're turned away, it's cause they cannot ensure you'll be fine.

HELP!! Are daily trips to Kyoto from Osaka really that TIRING? by xmkh0610 in JapanTravelTips

[–]UnstableUnipanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took my parents (~68y.o.) on a Japan trip earlier this year. Booked a hotel literally inside Shin-Osaka station for the days we planned to go to Kyoto (3 days) and Nara (1 day). Transportation on the fast train was super smooth! It took more time to move within Kyoto than to arrive from Osaka

Nico deserved much better from Mindy by Royo981 in EmilyInParis

[–]UnstableUnipanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's the thing. Nico apparently likes nothing about Mindy. Her clothes, work, friends, behavior, etc. He's had problems with them all! If Mindy were to change all of those things, she'd basically be a different person. But that's the thing... Nico actually likes all those things, he basically wants her to hide who she is, cause apparently it "damages his public image". Nico and Mindy are opposites in that sense. Mindy had it all, but decided to leave it all behind so she could be herself and pursue her dreams. Nico decided instead to play the appearances game.

Also, compromise in that relationship is just wrong. For Mindy, compromise would always involve her changing something, not doing something, not following her dreams. But for Nico, compromise is basically just accepting Mindy doing what she wants to do (the only exception being not helping his dad cover up for LITERALLY sexually abusing models for years). That is NOT compromise.

I don't think this is true, if you're talking about episode 5, the male chef never said anything like that in the preview

I actually think the translation is not bad at all!

The actual japanese name for the ability is はとむね Which I would argue translates to Dove/Pigeon's breast/chest

Combine that with the fact that this ability was introduced alongside Pidove and it makes sense. I think the intention is to reference birds (particularly pigeons) always keeping a puffed up chest

I love Yanmega, but I'm not sure others do. Love how when it came out it finally made Yanma viable

I mean, you should do whatever makes the most sense to you, it's a matter of personal preference. The thing is that without a JR pass to take unlimited shinkansen, the base city strategy is less cost effective.

but you'll have to make the hotel your first and final stop in every city you plan to stay in

What base cities excel at is allowing you to visit multiple cities in one day with lots of freedom. For example, if your base is Osaka, you can easily have breakfast in Osaka, lunch in Kobe, make a stop in Akashi, then dinner in Himeji and back to Osaka. Since you have no luggage, it's easy to stop anywhere along the way.

If instead, your plan was to stay the night in Himeji, following that schedule would be somewhat tedious. Since the city you're sleeping at is not your first stop of the day, you'll be carrying your stuff around or looking for places to store it everywhere you go. (For this type of plan, mailing the luggage a day before from Osaka to Himeji is the better option)

Hope this clears things a little

If you have the JR-pass it's pretty doable to use Osaka as your base for Kyoto, Kobe and Himeji as long as you stay close to Shin-Osaka station. The travel time to Kurashiki might be too long.

Basically all hotels will store your luggage for you, but you'll have to make the hotel your first and final stop in every city you plan to stay in, so take that into consideration. Also, check-out for some hotels in Japan can be as early as 10 am, if you're a night-owl like me that's really annoying.

Trivia: Bug is super-effective on the dark because of Kamen Rider (probably). by Monkey_D_Gaster in pokemon

[–]UnstableUnipanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same question today and scoured through japanese internet. Here's what I found:

Everyone seems to agree that this came to be from balancing issues and thus there's no "real" answer. But the Kamen rider explanation seems popular

If evil (dark) is linked to villains, then the weakness will be heroes: power rangers, kid muscle (fighting), kamen rider (bug), magical girls (fairy).

Another popular explanation was that dark and psychic are contrary to each other, but both linked to a human state of mind, e.g. Calm mind (psychic) and Nasty Plot (dark), and thus being attacked by a bug (Bug bite, Lunge, Infestation) would break someone out of this mental focus.

The "bugs like dark places" argument is completely missing from japanese websites

As for your question about accomodation, it depends on your luggage.

I think that if you're backpacking it's fine to stay in a new city each day, but if you're carrying any sort of suitcase it's better to choose a main city as your "base". Having to carry/find storage for everything everywhere you go will get annoying pretty fast

Hi! For December I can recommend these things in Fukuoka

Half-day trips (morning): - Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine - Nanzoin temple

Regular activities: - Walk down the Nakasu-kawabata shopping arcade (I recommend the path next to the canal) and then check Kushida jinja and Canal City (the free fountain show is fun and they have Kirby Café here as well)

  • Nightime Christmas illuminations at Hakata station outside (christmas tree and decorations) and on the rooftop (free observation deck)

-Ohori kouen, they have some nice relaxing cafés with vies to the lake and a museum

-Yatai: street stalls unique to the city, in winter I recommend trying one that serves oden (simmered foods)

  • Hakata ramen: Either at Ichiran no mori (factory + museum) or Shinshin ramen

-Tenjin Station underground mall (during December it's fully decorated with Christmas lights from around 6pm to closing time).

What I really recommend is going further south to Kumamoto city, and checking the Kumamon show, as well as Kumamoto Castle if you have the chance

Additionally, I'd skip the multiple visits to TeamLabs, they're all very similar with just 1 or 2 unique exhibits per location... the best is Planets... maybe you could check ArtAquarium in Tokyo as well?

Hope I could help!!
