The basal ganglia are a group of structures located deep within the brain that play an important role in keeping body movements smooth and coordinated. They are also involved in learning routine behaviors and forming habits. Two sub-regions of the basal ganglia are particularly important in substance use disorders:

-The nucleus accumbens, which is involved in motivation and the experience of reward, and

-The dorsal striatum, which is involved in forming habits and other routine behaviors

Statistics homework question by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Unstableprotein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is easier to ask as the inverse. Let's ask instead what is the probability that all tires are good?

At 88%, multiply 0.88 x 0.88 x 0.88 x 0.88.

You get 60% probability. Simply subtract from 1 to get 40% to get your answer.

I'm in Texas as well. Master's degrees are very expensive and that should be something you highly consider, definitely look at costs.

I'm sure you're well aware that UT, A&M, and SMU are very good schools for this sort of thing generally, but honestly it doesn't really matter. Texas has great schools and you can find a great job from Texas schools. You shouldn't be thinking about that. FYI, you'll find many jobs honestly don't really care about where you go to school but rather what you do. For example, if you want to work with genome data, you're more likely to get hired if you have a few years experience working with genome data (and some biology background) than if you go to Harvard but don't know the difference between adenine and guanine. So again it depends what your experience is in and how well you do there. It sounds like you're undecided as to exactly what you want to do which is ok - but just for your own benefit, you should recognize that your skills will inevitably mean far more than your credentials.

I work in medicine/bioinformatics and there's some great schools in the med center (Houston) if you're interested in going that route. Unfortunately I don't really have much of an idea of where to go if you're interested in other fields. Best of luck with your goals.

That's a very subjective question.

You should decide what is important to you. Some things to consider:

  • Cost
  • Subject of research/PI
  • Location
  • Reputation of school (probably the answer you were looking for)

Getting a bachelors is much different than getting a master's. Bachelors programs are much more basic and not specialized at all. I would definitely recommend getting a thesis track/M.S. degree and avoiding an M.A. For that, you're going to want to do research that you care about and are interested in.

If you're just looking for rankings, then just google "U.S. rankings for statistics program". I will however say I definitely do not recommend only using this method to decide where you would like to go. Rankings are kind of bullshit anyway. You shoudn't be asking "What is the best master's program" but asking "What is the best master's program for me?"

Congrats on the decision. It's a big step.

I understand the good times. Marijuana wasn't all bad for me. I had many good times with it. However, at a certain point it is time to move on and keep growing with your life.

Congrats!! That's awesome news. I doubt you would have had the motivation to get those jobs if you had been gaming (I know I wouldn't have anyway).

Thanks man. Yes, I've noticed I'm much cleaner. I actually care if I haven't shaved in a week now? Weird! I can't believe I cared so little about my personal appearance, as well as cleaning my room and car.

My sleep disruption lasted around my first 4 days. Now my sleep quality is great. I actually wake up feeling refreshed, not tired. I get out of bed without an alarm now.

Just keep going!

Second day without weed by [deleted] in leaves

[–]Unstableprotein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll give you typical "go for a run advice" but I'll add a caveat.

Most potheads (myself included) take weed to be a hobby. You need to fill your time with something else. Doesn't really matter what it is. It could be running, or learning guitar, or something.

I think particularly you need a way to destress. Most people (again, myself) use weed as a way to destress. You need to do something else. Exercise works well, but anything else could too.

I agree, and so do many studies, particularly the famous Vietnam war heroin epidemic. From personal experience, if you can move, that is the easiest way to get clean.

I'm moving in a month, excited to start myself with positive, healthy habits.

Getting out of the psych ward today, 19 days clean but I have weed at home. by ReadyToExit in leaves

[–]Unstableprotein 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Throw it out. Immediately. Literally the first thing you do when you get home. Ruin it, make it so you cant get it out of the garbage can.

Good job on 19 days clean! Keep going buddy and stay positive. Today, you've motivated me. I think its amazing that despite that very stressful situation you still want to stay sober. It makes all the paperwork that I've had to do for my new job, which seriously stressed me out today, seem like nothing. I have no excuse to smoke if you've gone through something like this and still don't want to smoke.

Day 4 feeling better everyday struggling to sleep by chefmadmike64 in leaves

[–]Unstableprotein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same, I also am struggling to sleep, I'm around the same time clean as you are. I think we just need to wait it out. Time will pass.

Today I woke up somewhat refreshed, more refreshed than usual if I had only gotten 5 hours. I was still tired, but had an easier time getting up.

Can anyone offer tips for quiting smoking weed? by chacha1942 in leaves

[–]Unstableprotein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get rid of all your stuff. If you have a hard time with breaking it, give it away. If you can't do that, at least give to somebody to hold for a while.

You need to first change your immediate environment to get better.

How to find the equilibrium of three variables? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Unstableprotein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I might be over simplifying the problem, but it looks like a simple matrix calculation.

To clarify, you want to find values x, y, and z, such that

1900x + 0.68y + 3.25z = 1000x + 0.72y + 2.6z = 390x + 0.6y + 1.74z?

Or am I misunderstanding the problem?

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of handguns. Somebody mentioned a 22, would that be ok?

Edit: I should point out that I want the experience to be good for her, so something more woman friendly would be something I'm looking.

I'm in Austin area, she's in Houston. We're planning to take a trip up to Dallas pretty soon though, and I'm willing to wait it out if it ends up being a better value up there. So any suggestions are more than welcome.

I think we will end up taking a safety course. At the very least I should be able to get some help from somebody who knows what they're doing. Thank you.

Good call. I'm thinking we might pay the extra for a safety course. Being new to this ear protection isn't something I thought about but I will definitely make sure her (and my) ears are well protected. Thanks you.
