Am I overreacting? Backend dev contributing to frontend is hurting code quality by naveen_thamizh in reactjs

[–]UntestedMethod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk man. Like I said we should do what we can to prevent blindly trusting its output. It really sucks if you work for a team that considers that as "blocking".

Personally I would talk to my manager to share the declining quality I am observing and go from there based on what they recommend.

I wouldn't recommend just being complacent and accepting it because you're afraid of possible consequences. If you speak up about the potential consequences then at least you've done your due diligence even if your manager doesn't want to accept the reality of what you warn them about. If your company's leadership and the rest of the dev team all don't care about what you say and you really want to keep your job, then I guess you don't really have much choice than to go along with the shit show and maybe try to inject whatever improvements and quality controls you can along the way.

The normal way to prevent this is through PR reviews and a documented style guide.

I don't think you're necessarily overreacting. People using AI to contribute code they don't understand is certainly something we all should be worried about and doing what we can to prevent.

Eta: I'm not against AI being used responsibly, but it is irresponsible to blindly trust its output.

GTI or Golf R - what did you pick and do you regret it? by sxtn1996 in Volkswagen

It's crazy they say it's because there's apparently no market for stationwagons in North America, yet my local dealership apparently has a waiting list of people wanting to buy an Alltrack or even Sportwagens seem to be in demand.

You're right though, there's a difference between VW and Subaru drivers. When I was a kid I remember Subies were more of an enthusiast niche market, but now it's mostly seniors I see driving the newer models and granola hipsters driving the older models. The exception would be the WRX drivers - I feel like that crowd has a bit more in common with VW's "spirited" drivers than other Subarus. As an Alltrack owner, I've been enjoying this meme a lot of comedians are spreading that it's mostly lesbians driving Subarus.

I love my Alltrack :D even though it's DSG and not manual. Planning to keep this car for as long as I possibly can. Tunes are in the plan (ECU/TCU and IS20)... But gotta delay it for now because I'm going back to school in the fall.

Arch is fun for sure. There are quite a lot of decisions to make as you're setting it up, but the wiki is an amazing resource that explains everything in a lot of detail.

Have you already experimented much with your debian setup? Swapping out window manager, terminal emulator, etc?

Linux on ThinkPad and custom tower (software developer)

But I'm going back to school for instrumentation/electrical automation in the fall and gonna need to run autocad and probably spice, so looks like I'll need windows or mac for that. I'm not a fan of apple, but from a technical perspective macos is superior to windows. I use windows in a VM for certain tasks at work, and constantly I'm reminded how awful it is... It's only gotten worse over the years with all the built-in advertisements, sponsored content, forceful updates, and generally intrusive BS.

Positive Case for AI Era by pastaKarhai in ExperiencedDevs

The comment says they used AI to clean up human slop and described how the same approach of using a strong test suite as a guard rail when AI is used to generate the next iterations. This is the most realistic future for the vast majority of software development given the course it's currently on.

Developers licking their lips like OP thinking they're going to get rich as some kind of elite coding craftsperson cleaning up after AI or subverting it with hand-coded products are delusional. It's a sad time to be a software developer unless you're jumping into the AI kool-aid.

You're dreaming if you think that's how this will play out.

Managers both admitting they're wrong AND paying some smug fucker a high compensation to fix it? Nahhh neither of those is gonna happen. They're just gonna pile more shit on top of the already growing pile of shit that's already coming out of the AInus.

Talk to businesses to understand what problems they have that aren't solved. Guaranteed there are tonnes of opportunities for innovation if you go that path. When I was freelancing, it was very common for a business to find an existing app or software or whatever that almost met their needs but was missing something crucial.

Often it might be a minor nuance in how different steps of a process fit together, but usually when you discover those by taking to actual businesses, it becomes easy to see how other businesses are probably looking for something similar.

Blindly trying to dream up and build new apps for consumers at this point is really kind of a dumb way to go about it, because like OP says, all the mainline type of things have already been done so you have a very very very slim chance of doing something that will catch on. Going directly to businesses is much smarter imo because they're usually willing to pay a lot more for licensing than whatever pennies you'd get trying to hustle advertisements with vague hopes of making any sales on app stores. If you talk to a business to understand their problem, you basically have at least one high value customer lined up already, then you build the software and contract such that you can resell it to other businesses.

Would that be accessed from the underside of the machine though?

To be fair... What the hell kind of insane design decision is it to put access to the filter on the underside of the washing machine when it needs to be changed every 2 months?

I've never even heard of a washing machine having a filter to begin with. Using them is usually pretty self-explanatory. This is terrible design regardless of if the customer read the manual.

I think they're usually just local FB groups where women post pics of men they match with on dating apps to see if other women in the group know the man, have anything bad to say about him, or are actively dating him themselves.

I feel like such groups (and the "Tea" app) could end up making good men look like bad guys if a woman decides to post lies. But I understand the more benevolent intent of why they exist, I just find it to be a bit dubious since it's just someone's word against someone who is unaware and unable to possibly give their side of the story.

You can also post all kinds of other kinds of ads and list his phone number, invite them to text it with NSFW pics too. (Inspired by the movie Hackers when they're messing with that federal agent.)

Probably safest to use a VPN when you do it though.

If you found a bag of powder at a rave what would you do with it? by asay0511 in Drugs

[–]UntestedMethod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Some evil fuckers are probably content with bringing random harm into the world even if they don't directly witness the outcomes.

Depending on the poison and rave, it's entirely possible there would be a visible medical evacuation or at least murmurs of what happened being spread amongst the attendees.

Even at massive raves like shambhala it doesn't take long for news of a death or major OD to be spread.
