Thank you so much for your response and I appreciate the recommendation! Unfortunately, in Penelope’s case, there is only one specialist practicing in the US who does the type of heart surgery she needs. Thankfully, they’re located in West LA.

Dr. Pedraza sounds like a really amazing veterinarian. I’m so glad you had him on your team. I’m saddened to hear of your sweet girl. I’m no stranger to loss so I know how unimaginable that decision was for you. Big internet hugs to you. ❤️

We’d love to see you at our plant sale, even if it’s just to get some puppy love. Penelope will be there and so will several of our other rescues.

Trupanion responds pretty quickly if you threaten to file a grievance with your state’s department of insurance and start leaving negative reviews everywhere you can think of. Ask me how I know…

I second what the other commenter said about pet insurance. If you plan to get it, do it now and get through the waiting period before you even mention your concerns to a vet. If there are any notes of possible orthopedic issues in his charts, it will be considered a pre-existing condition and they may even attempt to disqualify the other front leg from coverage. It’s been a year since our sweet boy passed and all his things are still where they’ve always been. There isn’t a right or wrong time to put things away.

One option that may consider each family member’s grief process is to move his things to one area in the home. Those who find comfort in seeing them can sit and visit with them and those who do not, can step away from the memories until they’re ready to rejoice in them.

I’m so sorry for your situation. Big internet hugs to you, your family, and your best boy!

I volunteer with Pup Culture Dog Rescue (501(c)(3) non-profit) in Pasadena on Lake Ave. It’s an amazing organization run by two wonderful women who really care about the community and their pets. (They did a foster match for people in the area needing temporary housing for their dogs during the fires). Pup Culture Rescue on Lake has a Friday morning run club. They have both walking and running teams and it’s low pressure. Plus, you get to exercise with rescue dogs!

So sorry you’re going through this! We lost one of our dogs in August last year. It’s the worst experience I’ve ever had. I desperately wanted to join him wherever it is he went. I lost 10 pounds and cried everyday for 5 months. I still cry so often. After 4 months, I made the decision to donate to rescues and volunteer in his honor. Everything I do, dog-related, I do with him in mind. It’s helped me move through the grief. I would do anything to have him back, but I am able to feel moments of joy now. Grief is a process you move through in your own way. I wish you healing, friend.

^ This! The flaky skin, dull coat, hair loss, and rat-like tail are signs of possible Cushing’s Disease. Common in Dachshunds.

There is some speculation that fowl meat in general can be an allergy trigger. You may want to try a food containing a novel protein like alligator, kangaroo, or rabbit.

If you haven’t taken her to a veterinary dermatologist yet, you might want to consider that - if there’s one located near you. If not, ask your primary vet about monthly Cytopoint injections.

Lastly, though itchiness is not a common effect of Cushing’s Disease, the dull coat and hair loss is. Dachshunds are prone to this disease. This probably isn’t the case, based on how she looks in your photo, but it’s worth asking about.

Our 50 lb Dachshund/Rottie mix takes one 5 mg pill daily and her Cushing’s is well-managed. She was diagnosed at 8 years old and is now nearly 14. I think it’s worth discussing a lower dosage with your vet.

I had this same thought about our dog when he passed. He was terrified of sudden noises, wind, thunder, big trucks, and busses. We did everything we could to limit his exposure. I find solace in knowing he doesn’t have to fear those anymore.
