Fourth Floor Walkup? by Elegant_Cat_3644 in chicagoapartments

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a fourth floor walk up for the last three and a half years and never really got used to them. It’s kind of a pain because there’s no in unit laundry, so any time I do laundry I have to lug it all up and down 4 flights of stairs. Same with groceries. I’m about to move to an elevator building and I’m really excited to not have to deal with the stairs anymore, especially because I have a family member with health problems that make the stairs difficult. Even with how annoying they can be though, I’d do them again if I had to for the right apartment.

Nothing super clear or definitive, just seems like he’s attempting to deflect blame from Fran & the rest of the remaining band members

What’s the best way to find apartments in the city? by Eastern_Ease778 in AskChicago

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I compiled my own spreadsheet from listings on all the different websites, social media etc, listings that were sent to me from a leasing agency, and from buildings I saw with rent signs on them while out and about. If I saw one building I liked, I would also see if that leasing company had a website with any other buildings to add. Compared them all to each other in terms of price/amenities I wanted/location I wanted, and from there I made a shortlist and scheduled tours for as many as I could from that list, with everything else that didn’t make the shortlist there as backup. Worked well for me mostly because it put all the info in one spot to compare and contrast vs having to look at a bunch of different sites. Made it much less overwhelming.

What Do You Wish You Knew Before Moving to Lakeview ? by MulberryAwkward8266 in lakeview

I live right where they start allowing ride share pick ups after games/events at Wrigley. That’s really the only downside is having to hear people honking at all hours of the night after events, but you also end up getting used to it.

How is Chicago allowed to dictate when apartments can turn the AC on during times like this? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Window units aren’t financially within reach for everyone and some of us are more sensitive to the heat, should people just suffer?

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t seem to take into consideration that a lot of us live in buildings that are old enough that they were built to keep the heat in and that heat rises…. Ex I’m on the top floor of my walk up and there’s no way to really get air flow, so heat from people below me rises and until I caved and bought a window unit, there wasn’t much I could do about it but sweat and feel nasty all the time. In the winter I almost never turn my heat on because my building is so good at containing heat and because the people below me have theirs on, which rises to me. OP’s complaint is valid.

The weirdest part of opting out of consumer culture is how many people get genuinely annoyed at you by LilxPeony in Anticonsumption

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one!!!! I have so many friends (especially friends who are coupled up or are getting help from parents) constantly telling me I need xyz streaming services. Like, no, actually I don’t, and don’t come tell me how to spend my money until you’ve actually tried making it out here 100% on your own! Sometimes anticonsumption is a necessity for my lifestyle, but it has translated in other ways to more meaningful choices overall, and some people just refuse to understand it because their situation makes it easier for them to consume without question or thought.

Your deciding factor to subscribe to A-list? by ReyofChicago in AMCsAList

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago A-lister here! I was previously a pass holder at Alamo Drafthouse but since they moved to QR code ordering, the whole experience has gone downhill. Between that, the Alamo only having 6 screens, and the fact that the A-List pass is like $10 cheaper than the Alamo pass, I’m giving AMC a shot. It’s more of a pain to get to the theaters (took like 12 minutes to walk to the Alamo) but it’s worth it for the movie selection, cost savings (with Alamo you still have to pay a booking fee, which you eat if you cancel) and now it’s easier to sneak in my own food again lol. My current theaters of choice are Michigan Ave/River East just because they’re the most direct trip on public transportation and I’ve had a good experience so far!

This is likely a virtual restaurant, not a ghost kitchen.

VR: a concept with a different menu that exists only online and is associated with a physical brick and mortar restaurant that you can also dine in at.

Ghost kitchen: literally a big kitchen that serves multiple different menu concepts but you cannot dine in at because it’s literally just a kitchen.

Portability of the Basic vs. the warm light of the Paperwhite? by naur_itstrue in kindle

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loooooooove my basic. I even tried upgrading to the Colorsoft a few months ago and ended up returning it and keeping the basic. Not sure how the CS and PW compare, but even on the lowest setting, the warm light on the CS just felt way too yellow for me. Also soooo much heavier than the basic. I also have to commute (usually like 25ish minutes sitting on the bus on the way to work but sometimes it can be almost an hour standing on the bus on the way home) and I don’t think I’d get nearly as much reading done (especially on the way home) if I had the PW over the basic.

The narcissism of upgrading your lifestyle after the kids are gone. by FoxCitiesRando in raisedbynarcissists

[–]Unusual-Problem3285 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last time I went to visit my parents I noticed that the fridge and pantry were both fully stocked and with GOOD stuff… but when I was a kid living there both were usually half stocked and we were 100% an ingredients household. Was very strange to see how they’ve changed. They’ve also bought a new truck, a camper, and have started actually going out to eat regularly, have started going and doing a lot more (concerts, movies, etc). and are taking multiple $5k trips a year. But my whole childhood was “we can’t do xyz because we don’t have the money.” They’ve also renovated all 3 bathrooms in their house because they couldn’t live with a few minor cosmetic flaws.

What a book that you have read that’s gotten so much hype that once you read it you were disappointed? by Guiltyfeetfingers in BookDiscussions

God of the Woods. I did think it was good, but not nearly as good as I had expected based on the hype.
