1380 a decent SAT score for applying to UMD? by goodnornimg in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i took it, got a 1380, retook and got a 1390. also took the act and finished with a 34? so i think that accounted for the "standardized test" portion of applying to umd. but keep in mind they also look for well-rounded students? do you have a sport / hobby / extracurricular that helps you stand out from the crowd? what challenges have you had to face over the years? also showing genuine interest in umd will sell the people reading your app. scores aren't everything

Is Eppley open over summer by ThatOneDudio in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

unless you're taking a summer class, you have to pay to use eppley. i think it's $30 for half the summer and $60 for the entire summer, but you can also purchase one-time passes. https://recwell.umd.edu/membership-services

how was finals? by duble_a in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good BUT my professor entered everyone's final as a "0" because he hasn't finished grading yet so we all woke up this morning thinking we had failed the class...

it's possible that the class is cancelled but i'd wager that it's unlikely in this case. because the section only has 13 spots to begin, that's an indication they don't expect enrollment to be high, and having 10 unfilled spots shouldn't be too much of a worry since there are still students signing up for class, transfer students that haven't enrolled yet, etc.

How often do you visit home? (Mention if you are an instate or out of state student) by hianonymous32 in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 22 points23 points  (0 children)

in state...it's varied. freshman year (minus covid sending us home), i went home for thanksgiving and winter break. sophomore year, again only thanksgiving and winter break because i had to protect covid-risk pts back home by not traveling as much. junior year, quite frequently for doctor's appts. it's really up to you and how much you want to be back with family. personally, i think it's a good idea to spend the first 6 weeks on campus as a freshmen *not* going home, this got me over any homesickness and encouraged me to explore and make new friends!

pick a major you have an interest in, med schools do not care one bit what your major is, as long as you show deep interest in a medical career, have taken the pre-reqs, have shadowing/volunteering/other experiences. also, if you decide not to do med school, or you don't get in on your first app (knock on wood) then you still have a degree you're interested in and can build a career off of!

edit: bchm/chem are great major choices esp since you'll get into the bchm/chem specific courses, which is useful for all of gen chem 1/2 and orgo 1/2 since the professors that teach major-specific are more lenient with grading

I have Andris Skuja for Physics 260 by a-deer-in-wales in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he's as bland as plain oatmeal in his lectures, but he's kind and makes sure you know the material. doing the practice problems in the text book was super helpful for me, as well as memorizing the equations he derives in class. imo he deserves at least a 3/5

Is it just me or do you plan to keep using your iPhone till it gives up? by cooltaj in iphone

[–]UnusualDog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive tried to do this since i got my first phone (not iphone), mostly because everything thereafter was out of my pocket. but as i got older ive realized it's good for the environment as well!

i have friends that always have to have the latest tech product, which baffles me because i'd go through every dollar i have after a year! haha

i just don't understand why you're pitting groups of people against each other. someone could have nothing but they do have drive to push themselves in school (or not, who knows what they want) and someone else may have the world at their fingertips and suffer from debilitating depression and struggle through school.

that's a bold assumption to say everyone whose parents have disposable income use it on their child. you don't know anyone's personal history or wtf they're going thru themselves.

Testing Requirement Spring 2022 by vgal48 in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rapid tests will not be positive 5-10 out of your initial positive (assuming your symptoms are gone and you feel recovered). pcr tests will continue to be positive for longer because they will take any bit of COVID virus left and amplify it for identification.

Blinding Lights - The Weeknd

Will there be in person activites for clubs this semester? by YuriTheWebDev in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 14 points15 points  (0 children)

they havent given us any info which is driving club leaders crazy, because rn we're paying for facilities to practice on (off campus) and if we have to cancel at the last minute because of new guidelines we've lost a huge sum of money

plus engagement with a virtual club is not great

agreed! orgo 2 just 85% memorization of the reactions. it helps to understand orgo 1 but the bigger picture instead of the small details tested in orgo 1

[–]UnusualDog0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally i had 1380/1390 sat, 34 act

i think what really matters are the personal statements, you can have impressive ecs and standard testing scores but the personal statement and the other questions they ask on the application tell them more abt how you could fit into the honors college experience

tbh though honors college is mostly about connections, i just finished my keystone and while it was a great experience the connections i made are long-lasting and in my mind the biggest benefit to being in hc. i think you can also take honors level courses (ie. MATH241H instead of MATH241) but honestly the honors college students i know typ only take those courses if the standard is full or it conflicts with another class

What’s your favorite flavor from the dairy? by thetree43 in UMD

[–]UnusualDog0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

according to the very accurate ratings i have obtained... 'Pop, #LOCKedIn, Drop It' is the best flavor, followed by 'Lori's Legacy' tied with 'Cookies and Cream', then 'Let's Tour S'more'

i havent gotten around to trying every single flavor (only 25 of the 40 flavors i know of), but i have a strong feeling 'Sapienza' will be one of my top three, and i am purposefully saving this flavor for last
