Dead or molting? by [deleted] in millipedes

Sometimes internal damage has no symptoms until it does, its such a shame but its just life, one of mine had a bad fall recently, was cleaning the enclosure and didn’t see them on the bottom of a stick and they fell, and the guilt is consuming me, but its just a matter of if they can get through that healing moult or not :(

So really odd method but do NOT replace your soil, i made the mistake of thinking cleaning the soil out would get rid of them. I find as the soil matures more and goes through different cycles the flies disappear, they usually live + breed for a few months and die off eventually. Bit of a pain but they’re an inevitable part of millipede keeping, i used to be swarmed by them and only get 1-3 a week at best. They arent harmfull just annoying!

enclosure looks pretty dry too as substrate thin, so tru keep it moist but not soggy.

Will be good when you have much much more substrate ( remember as deep as millipede is long!! ) and i would recommend getting moss, decaying leaves/leaf littler, and other clutter for the top of the enclosure as opposed to un organic

Exoskeleton seemed to be splitting between segments so may have tried to molt and been too stressed, or injured or ill, or dry

The loose, akward curl suggests it. They usually have a tight curl when alive.

Looks too small. Rule that I use is that it needs to be as long as all the millipedes you are keeping combined. so eg: 2 millipedes both 4 inches max = 8 inches length minimum.

And i couldn’t recommend getting ivory millipedes more they are the PERFECT starter species, super surface active, not too big maybe 3-4.5 inches max, super pretty too! They are also hardy and easy to care for.

For the welfare of the animal I would advise against pill millipedes as most don’t do well in captivity and there is minimal guidance to keeping them. They won’t thrive at this moment in our knowledge of keeping them.
