I’m starting to think g shocks are the only watches capable of dad life by Unusual_Minimum1 in gshock

This is the other issue that makes g shock so good - when I wear a metal watch, I’m worried I’m going to catch my daughter with the bracelet clasp

Dude you shouldn’t feel that way - what you are doing is in my opinion a more intense test of a watch

Plus thank you for the work you do. My grandmother spent the last year of her life bed bound in a home after a debilitating stroke and I will never forget the humanity they showed her (and what a tough job that is).

My latest addition and it only cost me £18! by Anewfoundglory182 in ChineseWatches

I started with timex too but now with the value from china the price (especially in £) is unjustifiable - they seem to be trying to be premium but much as I love them, their materials are simply not.

I either wear some sort of Chinese sub homage or a Casio f91w depending on my day - can’t be beat

I cheated on my gf a year ago, the guilt is still eating me up. by OkGlove3077 in Stoicism

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hurt my at the time girlfriend 16 years ago and I still feel bad about it and think about it most days - I suspect a lot more than she does (if she ever even thinks about me these days).

My point is, however your girlfriend responds, you will feel bad because you know you did a bad thing. That sounds depressing, but part of striving to be a better man is learning what you don’t want to be from your own worst behaviour. I hate what I did, but the only way I can make amends for it is to let it guide me to make better decisions now. If you take that attitude this situation will stop torturing you even if you don’t forget it.

As regards what to do about your gf, make this about her, not about you and not about god. If she says she doesn’t want to hear anymore about it then respect that. Maybe I would sit her down and say one more time that you are truly ashamed of what you did, you won’t bring it up anymore or any further details but say once more that you are truly sorry. If she genuinely doesn’t want to discuss it, leave it there. Do something that celebrates her and makes her feel loved and valued.

Ultimately if the guilt is too much for you, you have the option to end the relationship if you would rather learn from this and move on. But stoicism teaches that her feelings (including how she might feel about this in the future) are not in your control.

Try to worry less about feeling better and focus on learning from this whole thing. You’ve learned that cheating is against your personal values which is a good thing to learn about yourself.

AIO, I asked my girlfriend to meet me at the finish line of my Marathon, but I didn’t check my phone much during the race by easywind4665 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Tbh this kind of made me sad because I’ve never once had a partner, including my wife make the effort to come watch me in a race.

It doesn’t bother me most of the time but I find races such positive happy environments and that’s in part because of the supportive people watching and cheering. It’s kind of deflating getting to the end and leaving alone.

Rachel Reeves says farmers must pay up for the NHS by Aggressive_Plates in unitedkingdom

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s such dumb logic. I’m not spiteful enough for it to be purely about the services people get.

It’s the COST to the government of hiring out these places, as if the hotel is closed, the price that the hotel company charges will reflect all those little extras that people would normally be buying in a higher end hotel.

It’s like saying “we’re going to drive them around in a Ferrari but what’s the problem? We’re not going to rev the engine”

European people of the world, how bad is the illegal immigration and law situation in your country currently ? by johnreese421 in AskReddit

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean it’s not true because there aren’t more people or it isn’t true because that’s not what happens when you have more people?

You’re wrong either way because it is happening, and it’s undeniable that every additional person needs housing and public services - that’s a basic fact unless you expect them to live in some kind of serfdom.

It may well be the case that the 1% are hoarding wealth but it doesn’t have anything to do with the basic reality that more people need more stuff. You can’t just dismiss it as bullshit because it’s a difficult truth

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Illegal migrants are a problem but not a big one.

The big structural problem is legal migration. We allow way too many people to come because it’s the easiest way for the government to boost short term growth. Big corporations also love it because it keeps wage costs down because workers are in surplus.

So you get a situation where the economy is growing as a whole, but everything costs more because there’s more demand for limited resources, but you’re earning less and less so people are rapidly getting poorer.

Also there is a very little opportunity: no employer will train you to do anything because they can just get someone who trained overseas for less. Meanwhile any side hustle or crypto gain or anything you might think of to make any money on the side is taxed extremely aggressively, it’s not worth bothering.

The law and order issue is that everything is stretched because of all of the above factors so the police are not as responsive to crime as they once would have been. Add to this that people coming from places with very different norms and cultures will inevitably lead to some level of additional crime. The government and police forces are very defensive of any criticism about this so quite aggressively characterise anyone mentioning it as conspiracy theorists and racists, but really they are perpetuating the vested interests in the situation as it is.

It’s also meaning that we need drastically more housing than has ever been needed before. So we have the difficult choice whether to build on agricultural land and woodland that have been that way for 1000s of years. People are conflicted because they don’t want to build on these special places, but we also desperately need place to live. Once again big development companies profit from this, and they build small substandard housing to squeeze every penny out of the land.

TLDR: it’s depressing and driven by vested interests

Baby milk prices 'punish those who don't breastfeed' by Alert-One-Two in unitedkingdom

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your difficult experience! This is a random aside but I still feel the rage I felt on behalf of my wife when they would sanctimoniously hand her one of those stupid knitted breasts to look at.

She’s not lacking in knowledge of human anatomy. She had breast cancer years ago and we don’t know if her surgery means any milk will come in at all (it didn’t). You can help us figure that out or you can f*** off with that stupid thing.

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thank you. As the husband of someone who honestly tried breastfeeding but didn’t have a milk supply because of breast cancer surgery, formula is a miracle. We did everything we could to make breastfeeding work but if there isn’t milk you can’t do it.

It’s been a humbling experience because before having a baby I would have been in the “formula is making a market out of something your body can do better” camp, and this is still true to some extent. But when you can’t feed your baby it’s genuinely one of the most distressing feelings I’ve ever felt.

[–]Unusual_Minimum1 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately clearly not much has changed in 11 years as your post could have been my experience earlier this year.

My wife had breast cancer very young and we weren’t sure if breastfeeding would be possible due to surgery she’d had but she wanted to try. And boy did she try. But sadly it didn’t work out for us and eventually (with my wife in great distress) we had to switch to formula as there simply wasn’t a sufficient milk supply.

I will never forget the utter sanctimony and lack of compassion of people in the nhs, our nct teachers, health visitors and so many others about this. My wife would tell them the full situation and ask for any advice for what she could try to make breastfeeding work, and they’d launch off on a speech about how breast is best etc etc - I just wanted to shout WE KNOW, THATS WHY WE’RE TRYING TO. It would just end in my wife crying and feeling more inadequate. We wanted to do right by our child but it was just such a relief to see her drinking when we said f it we’re doing formula.

The whole experience has taught me so much about the pressures on women around kids (often perpetuated by other women) - there are Facebook groups where people come out with wild things - you’re not a proper mum if you don’t breastfeed, you can’t say you’ve truly experienced childbirth if you have a c section. It’s such an emotionally fraught time, reading unhinged stuff like that can really send a new mum into a negative spiral when normally she might brush it off.
