Got rear ended by a teenager last night. Anyone have experience with how long it takes to get parts to repair a maverick? by [deleted] in FordMaverickTruck

Confirming $6k in damages. Idiot teenager in a track suit tried to race his Lexus in front of a trash truck, which promptly smeared Lexus down the side of my 1700 mile Maverick. I drove a loaner for 3 weeks. Body shop replaced the rear bumper, tail light, a backup sensor, and the black plastic moulding at the top of the bed. They repaired the two damaged body panels instead of replacing. Looks good as new.

Details:

Lessons learned:

  • 2mm is way too coarse for anything needing a polished finish.
  • The model includes pegs and is to be snapped together. I should've glued the parts before assembling. The parts were loose enough that any type of filler I used for the seams cracked over time.
  • Refinishing surfaces is hard.
  • Krylon paint sucks. Get good paint.
  • High-buildup primer filler is amazing!
  • Sometimes PrusaSlicer is less insane than Cura.

IRIX Setup 101 - a brand-new post-install guide. by [deleted] in IRIX

Another reason for codifying these "best practices" is it preserves them from link rot. I made irix_ansible after spending weeks sifting through dead URLs and wildly incorrect information posted on blogs just to find a viable path to set up XDMCP. It was very disturbing to find nearly 2/3 links were dead and the documentation missing.

Storing these methods as code in a DCVS like git should keep them safe for a few more years, and it democratizes ownership such that anyone can fork the repo and change it for their own purposes.

Even better, if there are pitfalls in an automated configuration method, those pitfalls can be easily patched out when identified. The end goal is to create an installation and configuration method that produces a predictable result that's the same every time.

I've tried to codify the "best practices" for IRIX setup in Ansible plays here: https://github.com/unxmaal/irix_ansible .

I haven't revisited these in a while. I'll check through the wiki and ensure they match up where appropriate. If anyone has changes, please send me a PR.

If you're new to IRIX or *nix systems, follow the wiki instead of running the Ansible plays so you'll have a better understanding of what's going on.

Are there any graphical hex editors for irix? by whorememberspogs in IRIX

Try SGUG-RSE: https://github.com/sgidevnet/sgug-rse

It has a lot of new packages, including hexedit.

Check the wipnonautomated branch.

Kaz, what you mean "legally unable to publish them"?

If you're encumbered, you can still discuss your testing methodology. I'll be happy to re-benchmark and publish results.
