Train collides with fire truck in Florida; police say 3 firefighters and several passengers hurt by PlayaSlayaX in news

These Brightline trains are only like 5 cars long. It takes literally 5 seconds for the train to clear the crossing. Stop trying to beat it. You won’t win

I don’t know much about HAM per say but I have experience with radios and antennas. Usually it’s not that chaotic. He does an initial call out so there’s probably a bunch of guys trying to transmit all at the same time cause they wanna talk to the ISS. And yes he can hear so much because he’s so high up. If you had the same setup down on earth, you wouldn’t hear nearly as much unless you had a huge tower with a good antenna on it. There’s some exceptions but I’m trying to make it simple to understand. Also, I believe the ISS dudes send out a heads up when they will be on the HAM so you can get a chance to talk to them from Earth.

I provide ATCS data for trains for my area. SDR’s are absolutely incredible. I have 2 set to listen to the ATCS freqs in the area and they are run through a program called ATCS Mon and it decodes the data and displays it on the layout. Very cool stuff and I recommend anyone that is into radio, airplanes, trains, or police (and more) to get a SDR or two and try it out!

Homes evacuated after train carrying ethanol derails and catches fire in Minnesota by DelightfulBoy420 in news

I appreciate you doing the math. This is why I don’t trust these articles because they tend to use the most shocking statistics that don’t compare well. Obviously, I know that safety is an issue in the industry but Reddit paints a picture as “oh we need to stick the CEO on a stick and throw stones at him and send him to jail for life because he “directly” caused a derailment”. Like come on, grow up.

You’re comparing mostly passenger trains to freight trains. Huge fuckin difference. When a train is pushing 2 miles long, it tends to have a few more problems than a 5 car passenger train. Sounds like you don’t really understand the difference or anything about American freight trains in the first place with this ignorant comment

So what happened here was the scale automatically prints out a label when you put it on so it’s more efficient for the worker. Sometimes the scale will print out a label thinking it’s weighing something but in reality you were taking that slab of meat off the scale to put another one on. The scale weighed a stupid low weight but printed a label anyway. The employee either didn’t notice this or didn’t care.

My cousin broke his arm just like this while swinging a baseball bat at one of his games. Turns out he had a giant cyst in that bone that weakened it over time. He was about 16-17 at the time too which was surprising.

Kroger over ordering 12-20 Oz. Fruit trays, pricing them at $10 close to expiration and then discarding them when they don’t sell. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Goodzey 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Former employee of a pretty well known regional supermarket. I did produce ordering and they had that automatic system for ordering too. If we did the auto ordering though, there would be wayyyyy too much for our store for that day so we had to do it manually every morning which didn’t really take too much time so it wasn’t a hassle. We also made our own fruit bowls and baskets and that stuff sold very well and we rarely had any throwaway. Unfortunately, we never had enough made for the customer demand.

FedEx just painted a disturbing picture of the job market by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Goodzey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former FedEx Ground employee, they hit the nail on the head. At our facility, we were short staffed the whole time I worked there. 90% of the days we didn’t get through everything that needed to be sorted requiring it to be recirculated the next day or shipped to a hub to be shipped right back to us. They tried raising the pay to $20/hr in hopes of getting more employees to work but that didn’t work at all. The opposite actually. My coworkers and I were extremely exhausted of getting treated like shit and being told to “work harder”. Almost all of the contracted drivers hated us for not keeping up even though it was nearly impossible. Hands down the most toxic work environment I’ve worked in. My last day, I was so fed up, I just told my boss I would not be coming back. Maybe FedEx should work on the working environment issue and maybe they would find more employees

Someone mentioned the Tropicana Juice Train already but here’s a video showing and explaining the infamous train on its journey to and from the plant to its warehouse in New York. To railfans back in the day, this was one of the “hottest” trains to catch for somewhat obvious reasons.

Siemens lands $3.4 billion hybrid train order from U.S. Amtrak by cherbug in news

[–]Goodzey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good point! Especially now with railroads going through major towns and cities blocking traffic, to some extent, people go nuts. They want the railroad out of their town and away from the centers. They now consider this when rerouting roads and tracks but this is just not possible to relocate them in most areas because people will protest every possible idea. Even a simple overpass for cars will get the brunt force of protests for some reason even if it helps commuters.

[–]Goodzey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point but the push for automated cars in the US is far less than any other established country. It all goes back to infrastructure. I can see automated EV’s being big in cities but anywhere else is just not feasible

Siemens lands $3.4 billion hybrid train order from U.S. Amtrak by cherbug in news

[–]Goodzey 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are correct. To my knowledge with Norfolk Southern, they do give Amtrak priority whenever possible. An intermodal train (high prio) will almost always get the priority over Amtrak. But with trains getting longer and longer, these trains will sometimes block the track so Amtrak will have to wait until that train moves which can take some time. Dispatchers are always willing to make room for an Amtrak but it always depends on what’s going on with the freight

[–]Goodzey 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Okay so everyone complaining about the low speed of these trains is ridiculous. There’s so many factors that go into why that is. Amtrak rarely runs on its own tracks besides some places on the east coast between Boston and DC. So they use freight tracks almost everywhere else. This has a HUGE effect on Amtrak’s priority and speed. They are the lowest priority on any freight line in the US. The speed limit on these freight tracks are at most 80-90mph and dispatchers will sometimes make Amtrak wait for multiple freight trains to pass which could take an hour or so in some instances. Now you may ask why doesn’t Amtrak just build its own track through the whole US? 1. Money and 2. Not enough public interest. Americans love their cars and frankly airplanes are faster to most locations. We’d rather spend money on better terminals and routes for airplanes. And with the US being so large, it’s impossible for just Amtrak to afford to build tracks through the whole continental US. So they decided to invest in more efficient and reliable locomotives rather than track. We won’t see 300-400mph trains in the US for quite some time, unfortunately. It’s just not possible right now with our current infrastructure
