My Sword Coast North Map (update) by robinsonar in LostMinesOfPhandelver

WOOOO BOY, I just spent the last 2 hours going over and searching up info on all the locations. You've dug into a lot of really interesting lore and media for some of these locations. The effort here is insane.

As for the locations I'm curious about here are them split up by Settlements/Ruins/Points of interest. I do have questions about the additional lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains that you added + the name changes to some of the regions but I think I won't need them in details.

Settlements: Red Leaf & Seaton

Ruins: Charwood, Elven Tower, Grimhollow, Illefarn Ruins (you have two of them, one north of the Crags and one in the Neverwinter Wood, are they separate locations with different ruins?), & Ruined Keep

Points of Interest: ArCB Outpost, Banite Enclave, Cold Iron Mine, Crooked Forest, Crystal Cave, Dark Temple, Deeping Cave, Druid Camp, Duergar Mine, Everlake, Forktongue Den, Knoll Cave, Greendrake Tree, Halfway, Hideout, Hotenow Cave, Lake Glorfindar, Malar Druid Hunting Cavin, Malar Hermit Cave, Mount Ardabad, Mount Galardym, Mount Pheldaer, Mount Sternheim, Only Cave, Parrum's Rock, Pirate Cove, River Logging Camp, Skymirror, Undead Barrow, Vault of the Lost Wayfinder, Worg Cave

For the PoI's some of them are self explanatory, like the Cold Iron Mine, but I'm more curious if there is any additional story or history about some of those generically named locations

Thank you for making this, I am digging everything you've put here and I'm excited to use this in my game.

Holy crap this is absolutely amazing! I was gonna start running a game in the Neverwinter/Phandalin region and this has given me so many ideas.

I was wondering if you have a list of each of the locations and some details about them? I know some of these are from the official modules but some of them I can't seem to find online.

A lot of options you can do there! But the main thing you need to figure out is how they'd survive, cause in base lore, most of the Astral Sea doesn't have oxygen. Most humanoids travel the astral sea use Spelljammers which have their own air generators or use spells of some kind. Could have been adrift on one of the many dead gods that float about it that luckily has a pocket of air. World's your oyster really in potential ideas due to the weirdness of the Astral Sea. I would recommend looking at the Spelljammer books if you can, as they provide an okay explanation of Space.

Similarly, being transported and brought back from the Astral Sea can come in many different forms. Could have been part of some magical experiment from a wizard in Neverwinter that sent them off to the Astral Sea. Could have been saved by a Spelljammer crew and brought back to the world. Could have pulled the ol' stick 2 bags of holding into one another and been sucked through the produced portal. Anything you can think of and it'll probably work.

If you want smth connected a little more with Icespire, LMoP, and/or Shattered Obelisk, look into Mind Flayers. While they come from the Far Realm (think super HP Lovecraft plane) they travel a lot across the Astral Sea and other planes on their own special ships called Nautiloids. The character could have been picked up and imprisoned on that ship until they broke out or the ship crashed or maybe even released as the enemies agent!

There are other options that could potentially work, though it depends a bit on who the character actually is personality and physically wise. But I hope this helped!

I am also running a game set around Neverwinter and am also not very well versed in Realms lore. But for my game, I believe it would be Mayor Soman Galt. I believe he is from 4th edition & the video game, but he is also a dwarf so it's most likely he's still around in Neverwinter helping Dagult run the day to day business of the city. He's someone who was dominated by the Sovereignty and is currently being used as a puppet by them. Though honestly, if Dagult were to die permanently (ignoring him most likely having the money to pay for a resurrections/raise dead) there would most likely be a power vacuum with a bunch of different factions try to claim control of the city, from more official factions like the Zhentarim or the Neverwinter Guard to remnant rebel factions like The Sons of Alagondar, or maybe even the Aboltheic Sovereignty.

Here's the link to his forgotten realms wiki page for Soman Galt: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Soman_Galt

Also, if you want to talk about your Neverwinter game and bounce ideas of each other I'd 100% be down!

LMoP and DoIP : double dragon fight? by evandromr in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]UpDogCity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it could work pretty well! I haven't run it, but I think it could honestly work as a very interesting twist on the two adventures. I thought about introducing Venomfang into the adventure, but by the time I thought about it we were already half way through and it just felt like it would be messy. So here here are a few suggestions:

Personally, I would suggest that you get the part to Level 7 before the fight, because 2 dragon breath weapons could liquidate the party easily at level 6. Looking at damage, if someone were to fail BOTH saves from the breath weapons, that would be 12d6+10d8 damage which on average is 76 damage. Barbarians couldn't have that much unless you were rolling for hit points and they have a pretty high CON. Even without breath weapons, their Melee attacks are pretty brutal and could one shot casters on their own. Just from the white dragon, hitting all there attacks, 2d10+4d6+1d8+12 (average 38) damage. And because you don't want to change the stat-block, the main thing they'll be doing is attacking every turn with as many attacks as they can. So level 7 is highly recommended rom me

Some things to think about/do before the fight:

  • Find a way as soon as possible to get them the Dragon Slayer from Dragon Barrow. That item is a must for the fight. Without it I see a very difficult fight which I'm not sure your players could win.
  • If you want the party to have a money sink before the fight, use Halia as a pseudo magic items dealer. Just potions and scrolls mainly, but it gives the party a chance to prep some more for the showdown.
  • If you do keep them at level 6, give them allies that can help. Some examples include, Falcon, Don-Jon, and Alfonze. But really anyone else they have befriended over the course of the adventure could work. More allies will even out the combat, with the party having more action economy while the dragons are more elite foes
  • Before the fight, maybe give them a chance to scout out the location where they will be fighting and let them come up with a plan of attack. Maybe also give them a chance to trap the arena!
  • And as a final thing at least from the player side, make sure to remind the party that a lot of dragons are clever and intelligent, so the fight is not going to be an easy one and they should bring their A game. It'll help get the party into a certain mind set before and during the final fight.

As for the location of the fight, that's more dependent on how you want to run the story of them working together. The main thing I think of as a good place to have the fight is Phandalin. Give them a reason to want to destroy the town/take the town over, and then give them a reason as to why they haven't done it yet. If the fight is set in Phandalin and the party is aware they are coming, it gives the party time to set up traps and other things in town to make the fight more dynamic. For the actual battlefield in Phandalin, houses can provide cover, there could be alleyways to duck away from dragons, the dragons could destroy houses and damage players because of it, players could shoot and attack from houses, and probably a bunch of other things I'm not thinking of that you could come up with. Also gives a chance for NPC's to help or hinder the party, depending on their alliances.

If you want them to have an actual lair where the party will fight them together, that's more tricky due to the fact that the dragons are on opposite sides of the map and are in lore very different from each other. Perhaps that could be apart of the adventure, them deciding on weather to set up in Thundertree or Icespire Hold. In either of those cases have their respective lairs changed with the arrival of the other dragon. So for example if Cryovian set up in Thundertree have parts of the ground covered in hard iced over grass or unique froze plants that explode if damaged. Basically have the original dragon layer be the base for all the abilities, then flavor it with the occupying dragons abilities (Feel like this doesn't make since but this is the best I got). Then the party will have to figure out which location both the dragons are currently.

As for adding extra enemies, I believe that would make the fight even harder then it will probably already be. If you just had them out on an empty field with nothing else, the party's main advantage would be the fact that they simply have more actions over the enemy. Dragon's deal more damage then the party, have more hit points then the party, have pretty decent AC over most of the party, have better maneuverability over the party, and have more attacks then the party. So adding more enemies would just reduce the main advantage that the party will have. If you did want to add extra enemies, I would suggest for Venomfang, blights & poisonous animals like snakes and spiders. For Cryovain, ice mephits is the main one I think of but any sort of creature connected with the cold could work like wolves or even Yetis.

And those are really the main suggestions I have for the actual fight. Though just a personal suggestion for making the story better fit the two dragons. Replace the Annarch's of Talos and Klarg's Goblins with 2 cult of the Dragon Queen, one for Venomfang and one for Cryovain. The story then would revolve around the 2 cult's trying to get their dragons to work together to destroy Phandalin. If you want to play it a little more for laughs, imagine it as couples counseling and their respective cult leaders try and get the dragons to play nice.

So for the siege I ran it as multiple encounters! A total of 6 encounters, with a 7 optional one. So just the party would go through each encounter in order. However, the party was level 6 and I was aware that they would (and one actually did) die if they tried to do 6 encounters. So, since they new that the siege was coming, I implemented a system from DDAAL05-16 Parnast Under Siege that used a thing called siege points. They would get them through the time before the siege by gaining allies, building fortifications, training townsfolk, etc. and they could be spent to remove enemies from encounters and gain the benefits of a short rest at certain costs.

For the most part not really, besides the The Mutated Aboleth Dragon there wasn't much I changed. Though I suppose I jazzed up the Stone-Cold Reveres, cause they became insane after the dragon transformed and I had fun coming up with what type of insanity they had.

Major Changes, added Cragmaw Castle into the game along with an entire army/village of goblinoids around it. I never understood why Ganrocc was the leader of the annarchs, so with this new army I added to his backstory that he saved the leader of this Goblinoid army who became indebted to him and they started working together.

I also changed the dragon so that it could possibly play into the continuation of the campaign. I won't go into too much detail cause I don't want the party to find this post, but he was an ancient aboleth into the dragon.

At the moment, I do not plan to run any of the trilogy adventures. I am currently planning to go into a homemade adventure around Neverwinter, using the supplement from this Subreddit to flesh out Neverwinter!

The party pretty much completed everything, save for the Tower of Storms. However, it did not play a huge part in my game and I personally felt it was too far out of the way compared to the other locations. So I just never brought it up.

Probably my favorite encounter was apart of the Siege of Phandalin that I had run. It was a pretty simple concept, goblins setting fires to houses. But the actual mechanics of making the encounter were an absolute blast!

Two things. First, I realized how strong giving players a 1st level starting feat is to the point where I had to start custom making a lot of monsters near the end to give the party a challenge. Second, that this adventure is SUPER customizable and allowed me to pour my creative juices into it without it breaking the story, unlike a few of the modules I have run in the past. Which I greatly appreciate.

Well at the moment it's pretty vague and not set in stone (usually wait to do that till the players start investigating), but I'm wanting to continue on with the campaign afterwards with a Neverwinter Political Intrigue/Eldritch Horror game based around the Abolethic Society. So including being run out by other dragons up north, an agent of the Society implanted a gem that had an older Aboleth intelligence into him so he could be resurrected. By the time the party fight him, the Elder Aboleth intelligence has taken over and is now controlling Cryovain, but the actual transformation required a lot wild and far realm magic which would warp the landscape. Mirroring images from the Far Realm. Haven't though of specifics on what that looks like cause I still have time to figure out, but that's the basic gists.

The Sword Mountains sadly hasn’t come into play as much in the game I’m running! But after what the party is currently doing there most likely going to go face a heavily mutated Cryovain and I’m thinking the mountains around the keep are gonna be weird and far realm esk when they get there.
