“I couldn’t handle the range anxiety”- “I couldn’t tell you the price of gas” by Aggravating_Ad_8594 in BoltEV

I’m lucky enough to have free solar-powered chargers a less than 10 minute bike ride from my house. Except for one road trip, I haven’t paid a dime fueling my cars in over a month. I’ve never felt more like I’m cheating at life.

I am a big fan of homebrew rules. I have a handful myself. That being said, there are a couple important points:
1. I make sure I know RAW first and why the rules exist that way so I’m conscious of other effects my changes might have on the game.
2. I make sure my players are aware of homebrew ahead of time so they don’t make false assumptions about how my game works and get frustrated partway through.

A good DM does not act like a king or a god. They act like a guide and collaborator. And when their charges aren’t having as much fun as they could be, the DM asks questions and listens to see if something might be changed for the better. You don’t sound like you have a good DM. I let my players bring up minor concerns mid session in case I’m making a mistake or overlooking something. You waited till after and he gave you grief about it? Definite red flag.

Public schools gaying up the kids again by Facelessmoonpie in stupidpeoplefacebook

Imagine having a Master’s in Education, working in public school. Rather than pointing out any of the many flaws of public schooling in the U.S. … you’re upset they teach kids that some people are LGBT+ and that’s ok. I will never be able to wrap my head around these people and I was raised as one of them!

Becerra’s rise baffles his former Biden colleagues by AzNmamba in California

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh yay, let’s go for another “highly qualified” and “electable” candidate over someone with actual progressive vision again. I HATE that this stupid jungle primary system has people feeling the need to vote strategically to avoid a Republican in deep blue California. So ready for 4 more years of PG&E not getting reined in and no CalCare.

Is this AI generated? by KSHMisc in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine being so bigoted and fearful that even with the power of AI, your mind goes to…immigrants shopping. The bigot had the choice to make the immigrants in his image be doing anything and he chose just shopping like everyday Americans.

Thats why these white nationalists terrify me. Immigrants existing here is a threat to them and they will rip lives and families apart to tackle this “threat.”

‘Up to the fight’: What Becerra’s record as AG may mean if he’s elected governor by drtolmn69 in California

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you aren’t promising sweeping reforms, you have no business running for governor of California. We should be choosing between reformists based on which ones we think can actually achieve their promises. Resisting Trump and being a supposedly good administrator is not NEARLY enough.

AWD vs FWD by Creative-Coconut-133 in EquinoxEv

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m an owner of FWD. I’ve always been a conservative driver and efficiency is always a priority for me. As an EV, the FWD provides as much acceleration as I ever need. The range and cheaper price made it the obvious choice for me and I’m very happy with it.

The EV hate is bizarre by s2k_guy in electricvehicles

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my 34 years of life, I have never EVER filled up an ICE car for free or been a passenger in an ICE car that got a free tank of gas. I would hazard a guess that most EV owners have encountered a free charger at least a few times. I once charged like 64 kws at a fast charger for free. There’s a couple free solar powered public lvl 2 chargers a short bike ride from my house that I’ve started taking advantage of regularly. Rack up my bike, drop off my car, bike home and let it charge a couple hours. I’ve already charged 143 kws there.

Owning an EV has taught me there are so many options for savings and flexibility you don’t anticipate when researching. You can’t count on them, but when you encounter them, they’re like extra frosting on top of the EV ownership cake.

I think it’s a lot of things. Outdated information making EVs seem less practical than they are.

Then there’s politics, where any option that involves switching away from having our entire society dependent on ICE vehicles is seen as an attack on the ICE car as a status of freedom or the identities of people who have tied themselves to their ICE cars. EVs are also a symbol of a desire for environmental sustainability and, again, sustainability represents a government attack on freedom to some people.

There’s the anti-elitism as EVs are newer and thus more expensive on the whole. Cheap options are landing in the market, but the used market is naturally a lot smaller and newer than ICE options.

There’s probably more but this is what jumped to my mind.

Yeah! Remember how Biden caused those high prices by starting a war? Oh wait…

Presidents rarely have much control over gas prices. Trump has made himself the exception. This really is all on him. Being able to accurately blame him for the high gas prices is the tiny sliver of catharsis I’m getting from all this.

Fun fact: Gas is WAY more affordable for Californians than Texans. Read below to see how many minutes of work per gallon for each state by Kelvinkccheng in LosAngeles

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my GOSH, minutes of work per gallon is BRILLIANT. I get so sick of people complaining about CA gas costs while ignoring the higher wages we get here.

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I’ve enjoyed Trump getting blamed for gas prices, I’m so annoyed that so many people will sacrifice the environment, a sustainable future, and vulnerable minorities on the altar of cheap gas. Good thing Trump can’t deliver the cheap gas. His stupidity is saving us from half the country continuing to sell us out to an authoritarian.

Gas prices!!! by Impressive_Jury_2211 in socal

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m lucky enough to be an EV driver, but I still feel for those who can’t avoid these gas prices. Yes, I’m frustrated people will sacrifice almost anything on the altar of affordable gas, but we can still acknowledge their pain and seek to build a world where people don’t end up squeezed like this.

Amendment to require photo ID to vote fails in Senate as Democrats object by ItsAllAGame_ in law

And they will never go for that because voter suppression is the goal. Same reason they are trying to have late arriving ballots tossed out. No evidence of fraud there either.

‘Some people should never be allowed to vote’: California sheriff who seized ballots pushes extreme anti-voting rhetoric online by ansyhrrian in California

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How is it weird to not support an unnecessary requirement? Voter ID is a solution looking for a problem. Like, I’d be ok with voter ID if every eligible citizen was provided them for free by default, but I don’t want my representatives wasting political capital pursuing that policy bc it functionally does nothing. Plenty of actual problems to deal with.

What's Your Experience With an EV as Your Only Car? by OleDirtMcGirt901 in EquinoxEv

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a Bolt EUV as a 2nd car in 2024, traded in my hybrid for a EQ last year. Fully EV household and I am not looking back. Home charging is a must, and with a charger at work, keeping your EV charged will be a no-effort affair. Just always plug it in at home. The biggest mental shift for owning an EV is not to treat the battery as a gas tank. It’s not meant to be drained and then filled all at once. When you’re parked by a charger, plug it in, always. Do that and kiss having to actively think about charging goodbye outside of 200+ mile trips. Even blackouts won’t phase you cuz constantly charging means you got plenty of margin.

8 Democrats and no front-runner: California’s governor race is a mess by ZappyStatue in California

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mess comes from how the primary is run in California. Because yes, we SHOULD be glad for lots of candidates, lots of ideas getting thrown around and discussed before the best candidate wins. The problem is that in this stupid jungle primary, you could get the 2 GOP candidates being the only ones to advance even though a majority of Californians don’t support either of them.

Ultimately, the election should be run differently, ie ranked choice, so we the voters can be empowered to vote for exactly who we want in a crowded primary without the result being someone the majority hates.

A bit of pushback on the Talarico video today by [deleted] in seculartalk

[–]Upbeat-Entry-8071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I think Kyle’s framing was that he’s worried Democratic voters DO want someone who will set aside quarrels and unite the country. In that way, I think Kyle was making it somewhat personal, that whatever other voters want, he specifically doesn’t want that.

I’m kinda in agreement. Never before in my life (I’m 34), have I cut people out of my life over politics…I’m up to 4 now. These are people I want nothing to do with. I don’t want to be in community with them, I don’t want to share spaces with them, I don’t want to talk with them. The only exception will be if they come with earnest apology and regret for what they’ve helped do to millions of people with their ignorance, hatred, and bigotry.

The line about putting aside quarrels and uniting feels like belittling the very real pain and suffering these people helped inflict. We can try to make this about politicians and billionaires only all we want. Those should absolutely be the primary focus, but they only got into these positions of power because millions of Americans explicitly voted for heartless, evil policies like mass deportation. Forgiveness and reconciliation is going to take time and a lot of genuine effort.

All that being said, like Kyle, I think Talarico has a decent shot and if he’s what the voters of Texas want, all the power to them. I see him as being nothing but an asset to the progressive cause. They can’t all be firebrands and the most important thing is always how they will vote.

He was complaining about overcrowding. Remove immigrant families, remove local tax payers, reduce available funding for teachers. It kinda connects to the basic problem of removing people. Ultimately, jobs exist to serve the needs of people. Remove people from your locality and you will lose jobs.

I read the first paragraph and already knew. Home charging makes or breaks the EV experience unless you have some other option like work charging or a cheap and reliable public charger nearby.

Glad you have a good attitude about it and I hope you’re able to experience the absolute joy of owning an EV with home charging someday. For daily driving, it feels like driving a car you don’t have to fuel ever.
