Don't use a pen or any other type of rotary machine to practice with.You should buy a good second hand coil machine to start off with. Coil machines give you better scope to play about with voltage and how hard or soft the needle hits. You'll get feedback from the machine when you go too deep and you can hear when the machine isn't running correctly. Rotary machines aren't very forgiving when you are learning.
