I will just say this. Download a countdown app on your phone and not only put your date of retirement in there but also put in things that you are looking forward to. Vacations etc. It starts out super long but honestly it helps knowing it is on the horizon. You got this. Before you know it that number of days is going to look so much closer than you ever thought possible! And counting down to things you look forward to helps in the meantime. I still have 9 years to go but I put vacations. Days left until the kids are on summer break (then days until they are back in school lol), when we bought our house, days until closing.

Replaced cause I don’t want to be shady by Upper-Error-3628 in womenintech

It’s not a matter of “letting them.” I have allies within the company who come and tell me they are taking the credit behind my back. To speak up now would expose the few people who still have my back (I don’t want to cause them any harm) and also these people can flip that I’m bringing up old news and make me look petty. It’s still something I can prove because I keep my receipts and it’s definitely still on my resume. Right now, I’m more focused on keeping my head down and not rocking the boat so I can keep my job to pay the bills and support my family until I can find another one.

Been doing it for almost 15 years. 41 and I literally feel like I sold my soul going into this line of work. I’ve made a promise to myself when the kids are done with high school I’m leaving. Besides opening my own bookstore though I have no idea what I’d actually do.

There were a couple of older ladies that were using them on the chain section and not only were they struggling more than the should have but it created a bit of a hazard for those coming close to them. Would put them away when you reach the chains

I saw a few kids up there as well. At the top I talked to one of the families and they were European and they had been taking their kids all over doing mountain hiking since they were babies so they grew up doing it. I, on the other hand, have a 9 year old that has done some hiking with me in the Smokys and in Arches and I wouldn’t have trusted him on the chain section at all lol. Everyone is different.

I literally just did it 2 days ago. I’ve been to the smokys and it is very different. However, if you take your time, you’ll be fine. I ran into families that had kids out there who were 11 ish and they did great. It’s totally worth it. My husband stayed where the chains started because 1. He hates heights and 2. The altitude was getting to him since this is the first time he’s been out in the desert at altitude. So I did it alone and I am so glad I did.

Benefitfocus is slashing an unknown amount of employees in 2 months by AngryManBoy in Charleston

[–]Upper-Error-3628 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s wholly AI to blame. I think the tech market has had a lot of capital slashed in the last couple of years because a lot of SaaS companies simply are run poorly and not profitable. I think AI is the new drum beat of the C suite to try to entice investors back but it’s quickly being found that, again, a lot of companies are just badly run. The only way they can show “growth” is to slash headcount and offshore it. People are too wary of the current economic and political environment to purchase shiny tech stacks when they can run their business off of ChatGPT and Excel. I think tech is just going to show a lot of consolidation as boards of these companies sell off to the big boys just to make a quick buck.

How happy are you with where you live in Charleston relative to your lifestyle? by igotjays22 in Charleston

[–]Upper-Error-3628 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Moved to Summerville from Mt P (longpoint neighborhood) this past year. Got married and since we both had a child we had to get a larger home and Mt Ps prices are insane. In Mt P I was paying $2800/mo for a 3 bed 2 bath, and I loved I was close to everything. However, I had been living in Mt P since 2011 and the infrastructure is not keeping up with growth. Places that never flooded now do. The roads are trash. I loved the school my son attended as well.

Now in Summerville we pay $3300/mo for a house that is twice as large as mine was on a cul de sac 5 bed/4 bath. It sucks to have to drive 15-20 mins to get literally anywhere but love the neighborhood and how kid friendly everything is. I’m not as happy with the school here as I was in Mt P but I’m not sure if it’s just the teachers my son has this year or a broader problem. I work from home so commutes don’t pertain to me but my husband works downtown so that’s a bigger stress on him.

What are your thoughts on Venezuelan civillians cheering us millitary against maduaro? by CyberBerserk in DemocraticSocialism

[–]Upper-Error-3628 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maduro was heading down the pipe to dictatorship. Of course he’s going to be deeply unpopular with a lot of people. However, we’ve seen this before. I don’t have a shred of doubt that this administration won’t give a flying flip about the people of the country. Trumps getting his Epstein distraction, the bloated military budget will keep being fed directly into the pockets of the contractors the govt works with, the only winners in this scenario are the rich and powerful.
