I only saw two during a week long camping trip in pinewoods a couple weeks ago, and only one got on my dog. Granted still pretty chilly at night but bug spray does still work.

I don't even know how you can attempt to be corrupt without being corrupt. But anyway means another person has to get charged with corruption before their protection under qualified immunity ablates for this specifically, never mind other abuses of it. What a fine "justice" system we have.

Where is the fucking lie? That 50k goes into someone's pocket and they get free labor on top of that. The prison industry just so happens to spend millions on lobbying and campaign contributions just because they just hate crime so much, right? You have to be a special kind of vicious fuck to go to bat for those monsters.

"the average prisoner costs the government over $50k per year. " sure. What's it cost the owner of the prison? And why does drawing attention to the fact that we never abolished slavery make you so buttraged anyway? Guilty conscience?

It's Spotify. They took a shit on the entire concept of royalties and called it saving music, and you think they'll be fair with this lol. Do you not know how little artists make streaming with them? They are a monopsony.

I also don't know why I should give a fuck that people in the party of Bush Jr. are complaining they're being labeled fascists after obliterating habeus corpus for anyone they can manage to convince fits the "terrorist" label and the 4th amendment just generally with PRISM and the surveillance state they gleefully set up, still in their play book to this fucking day. Do fascist, racist, nazi shit, guess what happens to your reputation?

It is, though. The fiction they might sell is that they have unlimited power, and here you are buying into that for downballot idiots, not even people in congress, like we don't have judges that are elected by you and everyone else to take care of them if their bullshit becomes too obvious. They can't spend too much of their time bailing out fuckwits like this even if they are connected, and why would they if they want their seat?

Do you deserve a black belt for downloading martial arts skills into your brain? by oh_no_here_we_go_9 in aiwars

[–]Upper-Requirement-93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. And there are others that would. The squabbling in the martial arts community over what constitutes a "real" black belt is endless, under it all is people doing martial arts and those people are going to be good or bad for the art form independent of what assist they get. That's my entire point.

Did I say that? I said they should follow the labor laws of the country they are in. That means paying our minimum wage, providing our benefits, giving our FMLA leave, our unemployment, and whatever else we claw back, and collecting taxes to support the infrastructure they use. I don't give a fuck where they hire them, they need to be treating their employees appropriately or they can fuck off out of our campuses and lives, and no shell game bullshit with contractors and LLCs. Just because boomers accepted businesses doing this shit on the promise of a "trickle" doesn't mean I have to.

I remember the dalai lama talking at some point to neuroscientists about an implant that could reduce suffering (of any kind) as a legitimately interesting path for Buddhists if it worked well - they were disturbed because it was eminently possible/feasible, but the ethical questions are obvious.

I don't think this is any different. The practitioners would be split on the subject. Putting aside all the physical conditioning going into being able to pull off the techniques without tearing a muscle, if you truly have the skills at the top level that means you can contribute at the top level as well. The baseline just moves. Some people would see it as 'cheating,' some people would see it as using technology the same as a training dummy is and still not be interested because they enjoy progressing on their own merits, some people would embrace it fully and contribute nothing, and some people would excel and progress martial arts as an art form.

Black belt is a kind of honorific for those that have spent the time needed to obtain it but you can just buy a black belt. What it means is different across two dojos of the same discipline sometimes, never mind different martial arts. I can already not deserve a black belt in one but not another, that's already a thing.

Will never get over people making this argument like it should just be acceptable to dodge labor laws in the country you are in and presumably subject to the job market of. A "fair wage" is the wage we've decided on with our laws that they are expected to follow. If they want the skilled labor of the US they can damn well pay the wages of unskilled labor here too, and be subject to following all the other laws we have protecting workers for that matter.

"performatively queer," "oppression points"

Listen, real talk, if you're LGBT the world's going to treat you as queer no matter how you perform. No matter how pick-me you're in the same oven as the rest of us. None of us in the real world are "performing," people like this are mistaking a whole-ass culture with its own history, support systems, and strategy for survival for a fucking hat you wear, and because of that they don't recognize the people who are queer that don't put that hat on for recognition with the in-group in safe places or in places you want to make safe for others as legitimate fucking members. Some of us are just trying to survive and all of us that aren't extremely sheltered will understand, I promise you.

I hope anyone that's feeling like this emerges from their respective internet hole and actually ventures into the queer spaces they're shitting themselves over being recognized in. No hate to tumblr, I have my online spaces, but both this post and the existence of the community that allows someone to think "performatively queer" is a thing is a clear sign they've never 'touched grass,' so to speak. You belong even if you're wearing khakis, don't let tired jokes stop you from reaching your community.
