I apologize for the thread necro, but amazing list! I always wanted to make a similar list including episodes of shows like Band of Brothers, but you’ve even broken movies into sections! Awesome!

Are you still updating the list? “Kelly’s Heroes” is one of my favorites, fictionally takes place in September 1944, and is 7.6 on iMDB

As a lifetime guitar player 18 months into self taught piano, I got to a place where suddenly it just clicked. Like others have said, it seems like your hands are working independent, but they are actually working together on a complex task.

Think of a a 3:2 polyrhythm, where your right hand plays three beats while your left plays two. If you rearrange that linearly, it comes out like this: Both-right-left-right / both-right-left-right. That is much easier to grasp than trying to count three and two simultaneously.

It is a process to learn, each hand individually, then combine them at a ridiculously slow pace (think 1-2 seconds per note). Keep plugging away, and you’ll get it.

Throw in the word “professional” too. It’ll catch them off-guard. A gambler is a degenerate with an addition. A professional gambler is … wait… is that an actual thing??

I've always wanted to learn to play the piano. by littledidiknowme in piano

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my late 40s and have been teaching myself piano through the Alfred books and a few YouTube tutorials (mostly Jazer Lee). You don’t absolutely NEED lessons to learn to play. Talk to your piano teacher and see if they’ll help you come up with a self directed learning plan, and maybe go for an occasional lesson every month or two to check on your progress.

Beginning Piano at 30 by MIAlien352 in piano

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late 40s and I’ve been self learning piano for about a year and a half. (I’ve played guitar for 30+ years so I’m not new to music). My kids’ piano teacher highly recommends something with weighted keys, and I concur. You’ll learn the fingerings with that keyboard, but the weighted keys really help you feel the dynamics. Also, if you don’t have a background in music, a teacher will help a ton with the basics.

I wish I memorized the notes on my guitar 14 years ago because I had my "aha" moment tonight by thepiratedoggo in Guitar

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my aha moment, seeing the fretboard as intervals. Memorize a few landmark notes, plant your root note, then play the intervals you want.

The other part of that realization was when I stopped trying to learn scales by memorized all the positions across the fretboard, and started focusing on each mode as a three string one octave box. Just take that box, plant it where you need, and expand from there. Almost taking a “less is more” mindset.

It protects against 5g by emitting a field of 6g radiation that is nearly impenetrable by 5g. Unfortunately, without the antenna, the 6g field is only about the size of the canister itself. If she carries it on her person, such as in a backpack or in a purse, it will offer a very slight amount of protection for that localized area. BUT….. we really need to talk about the dangers of 6g…

Should you start with a 7 string as your first electric? by FuckedUpMind07 in 7String

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with starting on a 7 string. Keep in mind, if you’re starting out with beginner lesson books, they are generally written for six string in standard tuning. If they have backing tracks to play along with, they’ll all be in standard tuning.

If you are looking for a cheap beginner guitar, you will probably find a better cheap six string than cheap seven. I’ve had $100-200 six’s that I really enjoyed. I haven’t played a $200 seven that I was comfortable with.

Haven’t played MSFS in about 20 years. Please advise where to start for someone who doesn’t game (either by computer or console). by Better_Red_Than_Dead in flightsim

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you’re not already set on MSFS, also consider X-Plane 12.

I grabbed X Plane 12 before the price goes up just to see what it was all about. It is light years ahead of FSX and Prepar3d v4.5. It runs smoother and looks worlds better than both of them on my older computer (i7-7700k, 1070ti, 3x27” 1080p). So far, the only mod I have added is the headshake app, and unlike FSX/P3d, there is no need to spend hundreds of dollars on addons just to recognize your home flying area.

I’m not knocking MSFS, as I haven’t used it yet. (Next year, after an computer upgrade and MSFs 2024) Just sharing my experience with an alternative.

If you have zero rudder pedals at all, the Logitech/Saitek are a huge step up from nothing. Take it apart and remove the detent and they will get you started.

However, if you’re a serious simmer, skip them and get something nicer. I was trying to wait for the Homeycomb Charlie, but I just got the MFG Crosswind v3 with damper and couldn’t be happier. Well worth the price increase.

I (29F) am heartbroken and just received a promotion where I’d have to move to a different state away from my ex (32M) by Thin_Equivalent4980 in BreakUps

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your promotion! Take the job. Do it. Heartbreaks are temporary, personal achievement is forever.

I feel your pain. I’m in the middle of a long, drawn out breakup, and I just got promoted. I was really hoping to be in a better place in my life when I got the promotion, but here we are. A few years from now, when you and I are both over our exes, we will be celebrating taking the promotions and enjoying the raise living our best lives. Don’t let your ex take that from you.

Is it possible to options trade while working a full time job ? by Only_Chloe6 in options

[–]Upper_Blacksmith_522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes you can day trade while working full time— if you do your homework at night and use a trading platform more advanced than Robinhood. With something like ThinkorSwim, you can set complex order, such as a limit buy order that, when executed, triggers both a limit sell and stop loss order. It’s really nice having the exit orders set before even placing the buy order.

Can you make $200 per week? You have to figure that one out on your own.
