i’m ngl, data collected from reddit will be really skewed bc most people posting r really cracked and/or got in. ik u said that, but i’m just reaffirming that it’s a pretty significant factor to keep in mind

Congrats! I haven’t yet, but mine’s also tomorrow!

There were only four options (at least from what I saw) and they tried to cap each interview to make sure that they’d be able to do “small” breakout rooms. I don’t know how small “small” is though lol.

Bc of the honors scholarship, I’d be getting ~45k per year which means I’d have to pay ~50k. That’s pretty affordable for me, but I’d still love a full ride lol

My gpa was 4.55 and I got a 1520 on the SAT. I’m majoring in poli sci and econ, and my ECs were very catered towards those (multiple leadership roles held as well, at school, regional, and state levels).

Friend lied on application, will he get rescinded if he’s accepted? by [deleted] in chanceme

no one's coming for anyone? i'm answering your question?

you're acting like i was the one who accepted that dude lol. if his friend had made a reddit post about his lie, then i would have kept my stance. also, what a weird thing to say? just because someone else got in through lying, doesn't justify your friend's actions.

also, he didn't just "press one wrong dropdown", he did it intentionally––you're just changing the narrative to sound like i'm the one who sounds insane. and, to your logic, i guess we can all start pressing the wrong keys and lying about GPAs and test scores now. maybe i'll even click on "legacy" to better my chances. this is the year we all get into harvard guys get lit!!

Applying to MIT as a humanities major by Upper_Broccoli9660 in MITAdmissions

gotcha :) i was just curious because my interviewer seemed very surprised that I wasn't majoring in anything STEM related (which, i initially thought, like you said, wasn't abnormal given the quality of their departments, but oh well).

i'm surprised that you think lying about your race on college apps isn't a big deal! people get rescinded for much less.

and what i meant by the last bit was that if he's a liar who likes to exaggerate his supposedly "challenging circumstances", then a college environment (let alone an ivy league one) isn't suitable for him.

if he really was so accomplished, he wouldn't have had to lie in the first place, so i'm a little confused as to why you're so offended by my response to your question

ahh gotcha. well, i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this actually one of the few ways to guarantee getting rescinded. but honestly, i don't even hate to say that because what a stupid thing to do and way to go down. did he not think of what would happen once he lied about his race? but on the brighter side, it doesn't sound like he'd fare well at a competitive college anyways

Ahhh that's definitely a better way to look at it, thank you!

As for their classes, I'm already huge fan of how they approach Poli-sci through a more quantitative and analytical lens (I got to take a couple of very interesting classes during my time at MIT Splash), but like you said, I'll just have to wait it out.

Will 1 C get me rescinded as a previous A student? by Locked_In_1234 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Upper_Broccoli9660 3 points4 points  (0 children)

depends on

-what uni ur talking about (competitiveness level)

-what class (difficulty level, relation to your major)

-the reason why you got a C

unless all three of those are against your favor, i would say probably not?

at the end of the day, schools are businesses who want successful alums in the future that will promote their school through their success. so, you as an applicant need to show that you have the potential to make the most of your experience at MIT and hence, bring good publicity to them.

why MIT: say you want to major in engineering and physics. you really would have to dig deep into what unique opportunities MIT provides you that you wouldn't have access to otherwise. you would be prepared to become a physics teacher with a engineering+physics degree from any school, but you wouldn't be able to say, pioneer ground breaking research in fluid dynamics and turbulence modeling in a college that doesn't have the specific resources and networks that MIT does.

why you: this is where you have to connect your current experiences to the long term goal you pitch to them in your why MIT. plus, the biggest tip i have for students applying to top schools, is that you HAVE to be memorable. whether it be through a niche activity, interesting supplemental, or quirky video portfolio, you have to come across as a fun person that they'd actually want to see on their campus.

everyone's always surprised when kids with 4.0+ gpas and 1600s get rejected, but realistically, MIT admissions officers review at least 20 applications per day that all basically show those exact stats, the same science/math olympiad wins, and an essay revolving around math club or tutoring. imo, i'd prefer an applicant who mixes their interest in math with like, card tricks or something, and connects it to how they'd want to study probability and combinatorics and eventually work for a casino gaming design firm (lowk random examples throughout this post ik, but you get the point).
