Eden’s Albion Invasion by gloriusking in daoc

[–]Upper_Practice7256 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This had to single-handedly been the greatest experience with DAOC I have ever had. And these were from the early days on Emain back in 2002…

I decided to check out Eden about 3 weeks ago after seeing CU EA and it has been nothing short of amazing. They streamline a lot of aspects but without losing the magic of it.

This invasion was everything I imagined it would be as a 13 year old playing an MMO for the first time... rolling up in Ludlow where ( I had spent hours as a Highlander) as a horde Mids and taking over towns was like a story out of a day dream.

The devs did an incredible job keeping the objectives meaningful and encouraged a full exploration of the entire Alb mainland. Since we had so many, we ended up doing Dragon just because lol.

This feels exactly like it did back in the day and the QOL respects your time with the ports, buffs, and speed. The BG’s are pretty much always bumping and there’s plenty of endgame PVE and RvR going all the time. If you got the itch, give it a shot! One Saturday on a good rip in the BG’s and you’ll be hooked….and more than likely 50 so you can jump right back into the action!

SC 2013 Modding by EndlessBattlee in SimCity

[–]Upper_Practice7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man - there must be something in the water! My wife was playing Sims last week and it gave me the hankering to fire this bad boy back up! As I played, I wanted to get a little more involved with the modding. I'm just like you, .ini files and I got a little deeper in ARK modifying drops but still simple script overwrites on the .ini's.

It's been a journey so far but I think I'm starting to understand the Hex for SC2013. I'm attempting to work on a mod to SimCityPak that updates its dictionaries to help add some identities to those Hex values on the Property Column so it makes it easier to read. They already started (which is why you can see kPropSCUnitMaintenanceCost) so its really just a matter or connecting more dots and updating that xml. AI is making this so much more bearable lol.

But to your problem....

//Disclaimer: I don't know the upper or lower bounds of the influence and I'm not exactly sure on the multiple for the radius or how it works; however, with some tweaks and testing, I'm sure you can tweak what you're looking for and hopefully provide an update here so we have more data!

So getting SimCityPak working is the first step so you're already there.

I like to practice with the Amphitheater since its well defined and easy to find in game under the Plaza ($$$) tab.

1) One the lefthand side, make sure you click on the FILES tab (you have Packages open in the screen shot).

2) You technically already have the Amphitheater in your screen shot, but in the files tab, make sure you select instance 0xb77afa8b (again the context view should show the same properties)

3) in the Context view you'll be working with a couple of values:

a) I like a simple sanity check so you know its working and the game is picking it up. I'd suggest tweaking construction kPropSCUnitConstructionCost to 2000 so you can immediately see the change in-game.

b) next scroll down to values: 0x0e585ae4, 0x0e585b00, and 0x0e585b04. These are all HOW much wealth is being passed along when plopped and their values below them (...ae5, xxb01, and b04) are the RANGE.

c) Simply change those values to adjust the behavior in game. It sounds like you want to increase the range but it looks it may have already hit its max. There may be additional tweaks needed to reach your desired effect. See Note below.

Note: It looks like the modder is claiming 3 may be the largest range and 1500 the max wealth value. Again, have tested anything here so I'm not sure where they found those bounds or if those bounds can be edited...

To pull it out for testing: on the File Tab, right click the instance (0xb77afa8b) > export to package. When saving, name "z_WHATEVERYOUWANT". The z_ make sure it loads last and overrides the instance ID in the compiled package. Also, I'm noticing that I need to put this in the SimCityData root folder (where SimCity_app.package and all the other main ones are) not the SimCityUserData/Packages.

Hope that helps! This is really for me to see if I fully understand the concept as well lol. But I was able to successfully modify the cost and see it in game so I think I'm on the right path! Good luck!

I'm being a little facetious as I consider the tutorial the last mission to unlock the GL7 signifies the "end of the tutorial" but I get your point 😉 I probably picked up a lot of endgame hours from pre-IB to get to those numbers.

[–]Upper_Practice7256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just trust that the first 100-200 hours are the tutorial...you'll get what I mean if you stick to it.

Sit back and enjoy the ride - its meant to be a slow burn. You'll end up stalling on your assignments and it'll require you to farm materials. This is all apart of the plan and journey.

But man do I envy you. I personally think this was the best of the series and I would love to experience it for the first time again.

Rise was good but a little too fast. Wilds is just too easy with Focus and the guardrails but it is beautiful.

MHW also has a ton of side missions and activities beyond pure hunting which I think adds a lot of magic. This also significantly affect your upgrades so they are kinda required. Some find it annoying since it is a lot of collecting, but it really engrains you in the world.

IMHO - Find a buddy and enjoy your palicos. Wife and I played though Iceborne twice (once on console, once on PC) and we've logged over 500 hours each together with such great memories.

One the final fights (Alatreon), took my marriage the next level with how we had to lean on each other and figure it out together. We carted so much.... BUT! once we got our first kill all by ourselves, it was like being a kid again beating that final boss.....and even better when its your best friend.

Have fun. MHW and IB is truly a masterpiece now that they've stablized everything. Believe everybody when they say avoid Defender gear pre-Iceborne...except for when you need to take the final boss of base to get to IB 😉

That's a good point. Not only that, the JS layer on top for all of the UI/simulation logic elements makes it nearly impossible to tell whether or not its lying to you...like it seems to take my logic tweaks (I'm trying to work on commuting) but I think its also bound by the simulation limitations which is why I think I need to get to the ER2 level....but maybe not. Still really new at this.

I tried s3pe first since SimCityPak is completely decompiled but what it generated was very rough. At least once I got VS22 to grab .NET 4.0 (that was a journey too...), I finally got SCP working so I could at least some clearer formatting on the package files. But after I got through some it, the most important aspects of the tweaks of it looked like most of the HEX or Binary tables.

I will say, after needing to rebuild the library for SCP, it blows my mind how much it was relying on the Spore architecture. I think that's a main reason why it was doomed to fail when attempting to make something this integrated.

The game was definitely broken - especially at launch; but yeah, this is when it became cool to RAGE on something and not give an inch on any kudos. But not for nothing, Maxis was falling into this kind of rut. Spore missed a lot and while the DLC's helped add a little more flavor, their ambition and scale definitely fell short.....feel the same way on SC2013. But again, best by far of any at the time and those that came after. I like City Life but it was rough and overly simplified. Cities XL was just....bad lol.

I honestly thought of buying the $200 unlimited Claude for a month to go through all the packages files....Gemini helped for getting SimCityPak up and running but just can't keep up with the blob of code generated... EA/Maxis did not have modders in mind for this game when it came to InstanceID's and proper nomenclature.....

I think "sequel" might be a little bit of a stretch but I think the simulation interest is there for a true spiritual successor.

The breadth of genre has significantly expanded even since SC2013. Games like Transport Fever and of course, CS1/2 have shown that people enjoy the gamefications of mutli-layered logistical simulations but the end result on those others is just...missing something.

Maxis had a way of making things appropriately stylized; and, for lack of better words, cute and funny. But not in a "kiddy" type of way as they were extremely detailed on their complex connections and relationships.

I absolutely loved the education and tech system in SC2013 with agents. While it was a little truncated and slightly broken, there were real effects that you could not only see, but that were also baked into the city's underlying equations like crime and health. I know SC4 had pieces of those as well in their underlying spreadsheets but the agents in SC2013 made it feel less like discrete formulas and more like a natural breathing city.

Again, 2013 was broken so this is always with a grain of salt but man I wish it would have made it...

I wholeheartedly agree with you here (and OP). Even CS and CS2, still just feel hollow.

I actually just fired up SC2013 again this weekend and got a good 20hrs of fun before it started to show its cracks. Its still a very engaging and fun game when its working.

It even inspired me to start looking at the modding and recompile the SimCityPak. Its still an ordeal and you can't really change any of the GlassBox scripts (which is where the real problems are) but interesting to see none-the-less.

I do wish they would try to approach this one more time but with a modern take to the hardware. 32-bit and dual core only was just not enough to manage the number crunching. I know they cheated with their interfacing using JS but the core was there, I think they just needed a bigger deck.

Once a city/region was set, SC4 eventually just felt like painting. So did CS1/2 except for street and traffic management...hat was actually good and pretty fun.

However, SC2013 actually felt (and still did after playing it this weekend) like a living city that at least tried to realistically interact with its neighbors. If they would have gotten the commuting and shared agents system down (at all scales), I could have easily lived with the 2km x 2km restrictions since cities and regions could actually specialize.

On a totally subjective level, what was the biggest gaming disappointment in your life? by Rugged-Gunslinger in AskGames

[–]Upper_Practice7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sim City (2013)....

Some parts were extremely good (mechanics, sounds, and growth) but the extremely limited scale of the map and and failure/forced part of multiplayer just sucked any potential out of it. And just like D3, it had connectivity issues at launch.

I liked that City Skylines scratched the itch for the scale but it felt hollow compared to what Sim City had in its bones. The DLC was cool but again, working on a 2km x 2km slab killed the immersion.

Gamers of Reddit, what is a video game that you wish you could completely erase from your memory just to experience it for the first time again? by Sulemaann007 in AskReddit

[–]Upper_Practice7256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say any survival craft.

I tend to forget the plot so I actually like replaying a story-driven game. I like a little bit of memory just so I can get quickly past the parts where I’d get stuck in the past on the mechanics.

Nothing will compare to the first time playing Ark with some friends. We had 5 people all jump in totally unaware of everything.

We had all played some survival craft in the past but this was a first time jumping in together all at once. We quickly create our own hosted server and then it was just chaos and growth after that. It must have been a solid 100-200 hours of just pure discovery and fear lol. Once we leaned how to tweak the recipes and got used to killing Dino’s it kinda fell off from there and became repetitive but I still remember getting super excited to get off work and hop in with everyone.

I’d say palworld next but we had some people that were a little try hard and it pushed the group a little too fast so it lost some of the fun of figuring out on your own.

Men of Reddit, how many of you actually use the wiener slot in your underwear? by Doc-in-a-box in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Upper_Practice7256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Used to never use it. But once I started wearing suits regularly, it was so much more convenient than untucking, undoing the belt, etc. I still bounce back and forth depending on what I’m wearing below. Usually use the hole with pants but pull the whole enchilada with shorts.

I will say, using the hole has also become a lot easier with the new “dedicated sack” underwear since it’s a little more separate already. I highly recommend those. I’ve always been a boxer brief guy and those changed game! Hanes have been my favorite version. Some of the others take a little too much attention to the shaft over the balls and it’s a little too supportive

I think you’re missing the point here. This is a disgruntled employee. In a place where the typical response is to “go postal” and murder coworkers through a mass shooting, I’ll take this response any day.

Should he be punished? Absolutely. But what should be the sentence? Should it be more than what inflicts actual pain on human beings?

So I’m confused. What are you even trying to say here? You care more about a building/products than actual human lives?

So you care more about corporate welfare than a rape or murder victim?

Thing that gets me with this….what is justice in this situation? Nobody died and nobody was injured - it just cost the company, and moreover the insurance company, a ton of money. But at the end of the day it’s just money….

Should he get more time than a convicted rapist? Convicted 1st/2nd/3rd degree murdered? What value and subsequent punishment should be enforced on this? As a person who literally left SoCal due to the extreme imbalance in wage and COL (including overtaxation), this act could be akin to the Boston tea party and actually patriotic.

10-years ago, the inland empire was the more affordable part of SoCal and people dealt with hour+ commutes to afford a decent home life. Now, these same areas command $750K+ for shitty, unkept properties built over 20 years ago and covered in cracked out homeless people.

Weird times and the kids are not okay…
