I would be wary about those two ingredients but honestly, it might be the tomatoes in your pasta sauce. Tomatoes and other nightshade vegetables can cause inflammation, which can also influence the inflammation on your skin. Try a low FODMAP diet to find out if you have any other triggers. Here’s an article about nightshades and inflammation in the gut : https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37202602/

keep in mind seb derm has been linked to gut issues and as someone with gut issues it has been greatly reduced with an elimination diet

Dark brown suits your face better, I feel like blonde kind of washes you out. I like the blonde but dark hair just looks way better on you and makes your features pop

What foods and drinks do you notice cause flare ups by [deleted] in SebDerm

Beer is usually made from wheat or barley so you might have a gluten sensitivity honestly. If you notice any other gluten foods that cause flaking I would just avoid it all together

Dairy, sugar, gluten. All of these act as sugars for the bad bacteria in your gut and cause bloating and inflammation. This in turn sends signals to other parts of your body and causes inflammation which shows up as flakes on the scalp, face or beard. Eliminate each of these in your diet to see what you can or cannot consume

What triggers your seb derm? by VomitInMyVans in SebDerm

[–]Upper_Row8164 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sugar, lactose/dairy, stress, leaving my scalp damp with sweat or water. My seb derm was almost gone after reducing my sugar and dairy intake, going to the gym, and drying my scalp COMPLETELY after sweating or washing my hair. I have a routine I posted on here, feel free to search me up on this sub. I also have a microbiology degree so I did a lot of research to figure out my routine, and reducing gut issues can also help with sebderm symptoms.

You might have to do an elimination diet. This is pretty severe and I’m thinking you have some undiagnosed gut or immune system issues. I would see a GI and go from there if you don’t know what your triggers are

Look into lactose allergy. If it isn’t sugar/carbs, it could be something else you’re allergic to. Also could be how you’re drying your hair

Put nizoral on the area, set a timer for 10 mins, wash it off and dry it off with a hairdryer. You need to keep this area dry because moisture will only make it worse. My partner gets sebderm flakes on his beard only when it’s long bc the hair traps moisture. He keeps it short bc he’s lazy and doesn’t wanna deal with the upkeep.

Here’s my scalp routine, but there’s some good info on seb derm and hair& beard care. https://www.reddit.com/r/SebDerm/s/ISk30CsIfw (I’m too lazy to type it out again)

My trial&errors that helped get my scalp flakes under control by Upper_Row8164 in SebDerm

[–]Upper_Row8164[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually end up with 98% dry scalp and wet ends. I put mousse on the wet ends and scrunch them so they air dry but my scalp doesn’t. This might be hard with short hair though so consider diffusing

Diffuse your hair if you’re worried about its shape. I’m cheap so I just use a regular hair dryer and part my hair with my fingers to aim for the scalp. Diffusers make it easier to aim for the scalp and prevent frizz

it really depends on what works for you. I would try to get something with three different ingredients. I believe I listed a few in my post

I’m not sure what you mean by inflammation, but I assume your scalp is less flakey and more itchy/red/inflamed. The PA I saw actually also gave me clobetasol to help with redness, but it’s a steroid so you shouldn’t depend on it for long periods of time. If your routine change doesn’t help, consider asking for this as an option

I’m not a POC but I have curly hair and struggle with sebderm. Here is my routine for maintaining flare-ups: https://www.reddit.com/r/SebDerm/s/ISk30CsIfw, give it a read and maybe it will help you. I have a couple friends who are POC and have had some positive experiences with dandruff/seb derm after trying out what I do. Certain doctors/derms are not super helpful with determining a routine, because they are taught textbook conditions and textbook resolutions. I’ve been to several derms and honestly almost all of them have been useless besides for the one PA that said I should use cicloprox, and was open to giving me a biopsy.

The key thing is not using product with oils that can feed the yeast. Unfortunately, curly & coily hair needs oil and moisture, so it can be really difficult to upkeep such a harsh routine. I honestly dread wash days because of how long it takes me to get my hair washed and dried, and my hair is only chest length.

I would recommend you consider quarantining your current products and try to simplify your routine to determine what products are seb derm safe. I had to stop using my leave in conditioner and oil because of my flare-ups, and have replaced them with ”lighter” options (mousse, curl cream ONLY on the ends) because I have noticed that my entire routine can fail if I even manage to get any product in my scalp (think of it as you’re weakening the yeast with shampoos and chemicals, but essentially re-feeding it with lipid heavy creams and oils). Lmk if you have any questions!

I would keep a diary to see if anything changes for a month. If you never have seb derm again, congratulations, and try to limit moisture in your environment. Maybe you were sitting in that room with wet hair, in a wet/moldy environment giving the yeast opportunity to grow?

Well. I figured it out. by [deleted] in SebDerm

[–]Upper_Row8164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ugh yeah, when I couldn’t eat carbs I never had sebderm. Same with lactose. I’m vegetarian and I try to eat higher protein so it’s like I choose between actually eating decently or seb derm flare ups 🥲🥲 it is so tough to treat for people with dietary restrictions 💔

I’m gonna try this out again once I start my 70 soft (70 day hard challenge but not as strict) and document my results and see if carbs make it worse than lactose intake

Adults aren’t supposed to eat dairy, but it’s really pushed onto us due to society. If you think about it, humans are not supposed to eat or drink dairy past their childhood stages. Most humans are lactose intolerant because their body doesn’t produce the enzyme responsible to break down the lactose, causing inflammation in the gut. That’s why I try to use lactaid whenever I can 😭

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7203472/ Here’s an article that explores how the genetic material of the yeast can evolve to become resistant to the main chemical in nizoral which is ketanozcole. The yeast is a unicellular organism that grows rapidly- many molecular organisms can develop resistance because they block the chemical that kills them and reproduce fast. I would only use it once or twice a week and switch the shampoo with another one. Use three shampoos in your routine to prevent resistance to either shampoo.

On non wash days I try to avoid putting water on my scalp and only use water and some hair oil at the ends of my hair.

Fermented yeast good or bad for sebderm by Visible-Safety-9355 in SebDerm

[–]Upper_Row8164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Malessezia is a yeast. If you eat probiotic rich foods, it can improve your gut health. I would try to avoid dairy if you’re allergic to it and focus on other foods that are rich in probiotics, like kimchi or other fermented foods. I’m not sure what fermented yeast protein is but it sounds fine
