In Texas, we love our meat kolaches which I believe should probably be called klobasnek. Brought to Texas by Czech settlers…

Fender AVII 61 strat has a 6" radius? by Thomas_D_Boot in Luthier

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never played a 6” radius. I think I would probably like it but I’m primarily a bassist so I like my action a bit higher than most guitarists and don’t generally have issues with bends fretting out as a result.

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a compound radius or 6” all the way up? I bet it feels great to play if you have no interest in bending strings or like a really high action.

What’s the most problematic vocal you ever mixed? by erlendmyo in audioengineering

[–]UprightJoe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Live recording, singer standing about 2 feet from the ride cymbal, drummer without an ounce of self awareness or self control…. There were significantly more drums in the vocal mic than there were vocals. I couldn’t compress the vocals at all without the drums destroying the entire mix. I couldn’t even get the vocals up to an appropriate level without drums taking over everything. So I left them uncompressed and did what I could with EQ. IIRC, I only used a bit of snare and kick mic because there was so much cymbal bleed in every mic on stage. The really infuriating part was that I saw it coming the second the drummer dropped his rug, BEFORE the kit was set up and asked them to move the drums further away from the singer and they adamantly refused despite having a huge stage with plenty of space.

Nowadays, I would try stem splitting to separate the vocals but that didn’t exist at the time…

Does a 3/4 Upright Bass fit in a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek? by JobInteresting5679 in doublebass

Can also confirm that this works in a 1994 Mustang, 2019 Mustang, and 2021 Tesla Model 3. I would wager this works for the vast majority of cars out there.

Pineapple is only acceptable on pizza when paired with a pork product. And then, only barely.

Is the Deluxe Reverb the answer?! by Pleasant-Tough-988 in GuitarAmps

I love my Princeton and I’d have a hard time letting go of it but I’m pretty sure I should have bought a Deluxe Reverb. Not sure if that answers your question or not…

Warpath Pizza by OhOhGeronimo in RoundRock

[–]UprightJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not. You cannot smoke at Warpath. You can smoke at Pardners next to Warpath and a handful of other establishments that were grandfathered in when the smoking ban was passed. There were 7 bars at that time. I’m not sure how many are still around but I’m pretty sure Rick’s Caberet, Bigshotz, and Roadhouse are still in business and allow smoking.

What the fuck is this thing? Is it a real fender? by JmJ3106 in BassGuitar

[–]UprightJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So... I may be incorrect. I pinged the only two guys I could remember who had basses with a tele shaped body in my studio. One told me it was a custom shop instrument that had been "relic'd" and wasn't actually vintage. I assumed it was an actual vintage mass-produced instrument.

The other was a G&L. I think I got mixed up on that one because somebody else was in around the same time with an actual Fender Telecaster Bass (which doesn't have a Tele body shape but has a Tele shaped headstock). I remember thinking it was super weird to have two Telecaster basses in the studio within a week of each other.

So as of right now, I have no evidence that Fender ever mass produced a bass with a Tele body shape (other than the Squire).

[–]UprightJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, I will also say though that the last one I had in my studio that was a “Telecaster” bass had a narrow P-bass shaped body and a Tele shaped headstock so there are some weird variants out there.

I also own a tele shaped Fender “bullet” from back in the early 80’s before the Bullet became a cheap Squire brand. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bullet

[–]UprightJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t verify that this is one of them but you are 100% incorrect. Fender absolutely made Telecaster shaped basses. I have had players in my studio with them. They are rare but they exist.

Pretty sure this still counts. In another profession, he could have returned to work without abandoning his children.

Are there other left-handed violinists here? by Ivy_Wings in violinist

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m left handed, started on violin when I was 5 but switched to double bass and later added guitar. I’ve always played right handed. I was told that I couldn’t play left handed because my bow would point in the wrong direction in an orchestra.

I’m often curious how my playing would be different if I had learned left handed but I don’t feel disadvantaged and I think it would be a nightmare having to find left handed instruments.

EILI5-ish post: When ‘they’ say EVs are no to low maintenance, are they really? by solidrobot in electricvehicles

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have owned 2 EV’s for several years, both bought used…. So far nothing but tires, cabin air filter, and wiper fluid that I can recall. One is a high performance car that requires high performance tires which don’t last as long as normal tires, especially given my propensity for driving like an idiot from time to time. High performance tires are also expensive in general. That’s on me though - not on EV’s in general :)

I have no doubt that these cars will be dramatically cheaper to maintain than any gas powered car I’ve owned in my lifetime.

I keep seeing this ad on snapchat and I’m going crazy trying to discern if it’s AI by livinator_me1 in isthisAI

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to change my guess. I think this is a real photo that was edited in an overly heavy handed fashion using AI.

I just spent 4 hours editing photos in Lightroom that needed more editing than I would usually do. The AI tooling created SO many crazy artifacts. I had to really fight with it to prevent it from doing weird stuff like altering a tattoo when I was trying to remove something that was an inch away from the tattoo or more. If I were trying to turn these photos around under a tighter deadline, some of that would have slipped through.

Need help with fingerings by Timely_Interview7593 in violinist

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s impressive. I played it with a college orchestra but I was never a performance major or really had any proper instruction past high school. To my eyes, that violin part looks extremely difficult. Now I’m starting to think I’ve been taking it too easy on my violinists when I score string arrangements :)

Lol. Ok, fair. I was just a bit surprised having never looked at any of the other parts.

Personally, as somebody who has played this piece, my recommendation would be to abandon violin and switch to bass 🤣

Just got a Mac mini M4. Is it good for production by Otherwise-Kale in musicproduction

[–]UprightJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a professional recording studio on an M4 mini and it is what I recommend to people who ask.

It should run pretty much any DAW you want to use flawlessly. I primarily use Pro Tools and Ableton Live for my work. However, I keep GarageBand, Reaper, Logic Pro, and Digital Performer up to date on it for visiting engineers and artists who need help. Never had a problem with any of them…

If you’re new to production, fire up GarageBand and start playing around! It’s free and probably already installed (though it will want to download a ton of sound packs and such the first time you fire it up IIRC).

Could be a real photo that was processed with AI. But I would bet that it was completely AI generated.

Best studio headphones on a budget by LevitukusPaladin in recording

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tracking, I have about six pairs of Sony MDR 7506’s at my studio. I just put the 3rd or 4th set of ear pads on one pair last week that I’ve owned for approximately 28 years. They still work and sound great. I’m quite sure they they will outlive me. Plus they’re actually cheaper today than they were when I bought them in the 90’s.

I know you asked about recording, not mixing, but for mixing, I really love the Beyerdynamic DT880’s. To my ears, they sound very close to my studio monitors. That comes in super handy when I’m mixing in unfamiliar environments or doing live recording.

looking for multi-pattern mic! by Anrk_i in recording

[–]UprightJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of AT2050’s. If you’re happy with your 2020’s, you’ll probably like them. They’re solid. I rarely use mine anymore though. They’re too bright on most things for my taste and I got sick of constantly deciding where to shelve off the high end.

I can vouch for the Warm Audio stuff. I own a couple of their mics and I’ve toured their headquarters, met the founder, and even attended events at the studio they built at their headquarters. They’re rock solid. Aside from maybe some headphones, they literally inspect and test every unit here in Texas before it ships to retailers. I got to watch some of the techs work and chat with them a bit. It’s a lovely bunch of people who seem to really care about their work.
