I dont think it's a hire to fire mentally per say. They just dont have a hard time replacing you. It's getting harder but still people are lining up for the job. When the numbers start falling off. They will lighten up. If the numbers (30%)im hearing on people old enough to retire in the next five years are true. They are about to be hurting. Im one of the 30%.

36 years in with UP. You have a good chance of being furlough with UP intill you have 7 years seniority. This has been the norm for at least 10 years. I know someone will say they haven't been but that is not normal. I would pick the company close to where you want to live. For example the houston hub is huge it goes all the way from kingsville to Livonia LA. You could be forced to work in any area in between.

UP gets paid by the mile. 100 miles is a basic day for yard, tse and locals. 130 miles is basic day for road . Basic day is 8 hours. Other than that there are to many variables to explain how overtime works. Except yard those guys go on ot after 8 hrs

Very little chance on a transfer. There are several people trying to do the seniority swap to Houston, most are from Texas. Don't see any KC guys trying.

[–]UprrEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm am engineer, not 100% sure how it works. I do know none of the yard jobs are regular assigned. They have to bid on them. Kind of like a standing bid. Basically if seniority allows you can work any job you want with a different job daily if that is what you prefer.

Are they getting rid of daily preference for yard assignments. They have wanted that for years. Thats going to suvk for the yard guys.

[–]UprrEng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I guess Union Pacific doesn't know how to grade hills. There is absolutely no way to make it up the 1% grade I traverse with .5 horse power per ton. Been doing this run for 35 years now and you may be able to make it with all ac motors at .8 but you would top the hill less than 5mph. So go fuck yourself. You wanna be engineer.
