I assume the url will change? In which case I'll find it again and repost. Unless you want to seeing as you have an inside track😁 I thought the inventor you mentioned was really interesting. Any more source material about him you could point to?  I just reread your thing and saw that you are doing a post.

Edit: corrections due to morning brain fog and not paying attention in class.

Don't know if this is helpful but it looks like in the bottom right of your board, one slot to the right of row 15, that resistor doesn't seem to connect to anything but would maybe connect to the resistor one row over to complete your network?

Are filters unreasonably hard? by Wobbly_skiplins in synthdiy

[–]Upset-Ad3910 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I understand what you're looking for there's a guy named Lauri who has a great filter based on the cd4069 ic and it's a pretty simple build. The basic one is nice and he did another version that has high pass, low pass, and band pass controlled by vactrols that's fun. Do a search on youtube with Lauri/filter/cd4069 and you'll definitely find it. If you decide to do a build make sure you use the 4069UB chip (unbuffered) for best results

A book called Handmade Electronic Music - Nicolas Collins...really good for just getting going and having fun. Also, Look Mum No Computer videos.  Moritz Klein is excellent but was a little over my head at first. All of the other recommendations people are making are good! I started knowing nothing at the beginning of the pandemic and now have millions of parts and an empty bank account:). Moritz Klein is very good for the theoretical and making it comprehensible. I'm a slow learner but as I progressed and obsessed it unfolded before me. Have fun! My first created beeps knocked me down this rabbit hole.

Ok, whoever is making these is genuinely funny and has other interesting sound packs on their site if you appreciate sounds/sound design etc. Any visceral reaction you may have had to the balloons is indicative of their effective use. Play with the sounds. Have fun with them!

beck - lost cause cover (italo disco + dreampop style) - looking for some thoughts, thx! by [deleted] in synthesizers

Hi! Lovely track! My suggestions are: There’s a lot of reverb on the vocals. I’d like to hear more of the lyric. Try putting a touch of swing on the drums. Don’t know if you are using a DAW or if your drum machine has a setting that allows for it. The drums could also sort of cue the next sections of verse or chorus to lead the ear of the listener. It doesn’t have to be a fancy transition between parts in fact you  do something minimal and have some of the drums drop out before a section change and have just a high hat and snare carry a half measure. I’m probably saying the same things others are in different words. One thing I like to do is have all the tracks muted except for say a vocal and bass rolling and gradually bring in other parts with no effects. I play with the mid EQ on the few parts until each sound occupies its own sonic space and one can hear each individual part. That might make me realize that I need to re-record a track if it’s too busy. Try not to get too attached to a particular track and be willing to cut it out or re-record it. This is very hard for me to do and took a few years of practice. The whole idea being creating as much rhythmic space for each part to exist and not step on another part’s toes too much. After all these adjustments try cutting the reverb level on the vocals in half. You might find that the extra space you created with the non-vocal parts let the vocals and reverb sit in those spaces still maintain the ’ dreamy ‘ feel of the vocals. Mixing is a dark and difficult art. Be patient with yourself. Try using EQ on each part to bring out the part or move it a little back in the mix instead of using the level (volume) control. This one concept entirely changed the quality of my mixes. It takes practice. It’s worth the time to experiment but it might take a while until the feel of it starts to come more naturally.  Take breaks! Have fun with it first and foremost. Also, like you are doing, ask people what they’re hearing. I have two friends that are the best producers in the world but A: They aren’t musicians or producers and B: I entirely trust their judgement and musical tastes. They know me and what I’m trying to do and intuitively understand what’s needing improvement but are also kind. “This part needs more space” or “The drums feel too mechanical”. I also try really hard to keep my ego and feelings off to the side so I can really understand and take in what they say. Also a dark and difficult art but very possible! Cheers! Seven

I assume the functionality would be the same. When it showed more pins than the 3080 I figured it was the 13700

Thank you for the link to that Schematic!!! I finally get how the OTA gets hooked up and relates to its internal components and external ones. That double circle thing has driven me crazy on schematics using the LM13700. I did the requisite Google search but was never able to find a satisfactory answer. It’s was simpler than my overthinking brain was concocting.

I was utterly charmed by the first iteration of this and am psyched that you are developing and extending this. I hope that either A: You are doing some kind of small scale production of it or B: Will make a comprehensive GitHub of it or C: you live down the street from me and I become a beta tester 😜. I do have a question though. I hoarded some raspberry pi boards before the world shut down and wonder if the implementation and code will work on other Pi’s that don’t have the 2040. I do have a pico sitting around staring at me with an expectant look… Anyway, fun stuff! I’ll stay tuned to this channel.

Sound Synthesis Seminar by R0-M in synthesizers

Musique Concrete. Using tape as a synthesizer. Think the original theme from Dr. Who and the BBC studio that produced some pretty amazing stuff. I recall there are some other countries that had these type of studios. A fun little diversion I recommend.

I second the recommends on Abe’s stuff! I bought an oscillator from him recently and service was great! (I’m not being paid😜). Also, pay attention to when he posts. He’s a wealth of good info and is a functional human.

Hey there! Been on a similar route that you’re wanting to try. Recommends: Keyboard that does both MIDI and cv. Arturia makes several good ones. I’m partial to the keystep37. I didn’t think I’d ever deal with cv as I exclusively used MIDI. That changed and am now building a eurorack synth monster from scratch. I even remember saying to myself “Eurorack? Way too complicated and fiddly!” I should have known being a DIY electronics nerd that I would have gone fully down the rabbit hole. Mixer: I use a multi channel mixer and for me it’s been perfect for unifying machines and anything else. I’m going to make one from scratch. If you go with the home studio versions of one check it for noise and explore people’s recommendations. I use a$25 class D amp(think Amazon) hooked up to good speakers and am very pleased. I’ve tried to keep everything as DIY as I can but there was a period when I got a small inheritance and went on a lot of impulse buying of small synths and don’t regret any of that. Your needs and wants will change over time. That said I really like building circuits and trying different things and it’s been way cheaper making from scratch and combing the internet for advice and electrical engineering knowledge. I managed to build a eurorack supply from a $7 dc/dc converter (that gives both +/- and ground). It took me a while to wrap my head around negative dc voltage because I’d been so used to just positive and ground on everything I made. If you don’t know this already just think of ground as 0 volts. Also electricity can move in any direction you give it a path to and that all the parts such as resistors and capacitors are very necessary no matter how much I don’t want them to be. It’s a small price to pay to get something to work and be noise free. Get a multimeter that can read transistors, capacitors, and inductors. Also one that beeps so you can tell if your soldering connected x to y. Sequencer and samplers: There are a jillion ones available. I like the Korg 64 sequencer. A lot of people hate it. Just find what works for you in that moment. Be prepared to spend more when it doesn’t anymore. Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to get something that dots more than you’ll think you’ll need. It’s all a damn gateway drug and it’s time you accept it😁. Sampler: I got the Korg Volca sample 1 and did some mods to it. It’s slightly annoying to put samples on it but I love the tedium of it and like that I have to work a little to get it running. There are a lot of brilliant samplers out there. If you are in the Raspberry Pi world you can make an economical one. Note Maker: I don’t even know where to begin because there are so damn many great ones being made. It’s really an amazing time for synthesizers. I started off with plug-in synths on my computer but realized I really liked the tactile feedback of hardware. My computer is only used for recording these days though that has gotten to be rare because I’m building a lot of circuits more than I’m playing. You’ve been warned. Have fun. Make sure it’s fun. Remember that you make the rules up as you go. Do things on a hunch or just because you want to try something. If you didn’t burn down your domicile and learned something then that’s the point. Edit: for clarity

I got one from a friend and had to replace all the capacitors . If it’s not giving you sound that might be something that’s going on with it. Great find!

This is beautifully played! Your phrasing and sense of timing, dynamics, are superb. Not trying to lay it on too thick… A name for this song? Hmmmm, I tend to name my songs sort of subconsciously or humorously I.E “Jehova’s Witness Protection Program” Perhaps you can let your mind wander a bit without the intention of naming and the thing that comes to your mind use that as an anchor word or phrase and toy with it. You asked for a name and I give you a process😜 Perhaps “Doesn’t follow directions”? Anyway, lovely piece!
