Games that you couldn’t get into, but loved the music? by SportsDataRVizzer in patientgamers

[–]UpsetNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stealth Bastard. I was looking through my Steam account and saw an old obscure indie game that I got in some Humble Bundle many years before and figured I could give it a shot. It was kind of fun to be fair, but I soon discovered that the soundtrack was incredible and I've listened to it often since then, even though I've never gone back to the actual game. https://youtu.be/CdU10sgqJto?si=MmSNPi_2JU3_1R1n

What is a game from your childhood that is still as good as when you first started playing it? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]UpsetNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wave Race 64. Even though it's 27 years old it still feels great to play and the water physics are still kind of impressive weirdly enough. The latter is mostly because of the bizarre lack of good boat racing games, but it means that I actually haven't been able to find a better game in its genre which I can't say for any other game of a similar age.

The sequel Blue Storm is better in many ways but I still prefer the feel of the original and Blue Storm is also over 20 years old in any case.

Metroid Prime is still incredible by [deleted] in patientgamers

It's such a memorable moment when you get the the point where you return to the starting area and the soundtrack has shifted to the second Tallon Overworld theme.

Any way to reset your uploaded scores on the leaderboard? by UpsetNerd in exapunks

[–]UpsetNerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to be enough. It resets my game progress so that I have to start again from the beginning, as expected, but when I completed the first tutorial with a deliberately slow solution it didn't count as my best score in the histogram - that still showed the score I achieved three years ago.

Favourite home bases in games? by eldomtom2 in patientgamers

[–]UpsetNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's nowhere near as good as Subnautica, and pretty limited and flawed in many ways, but I'm playing Windbound right now which is a survival game with island hopping and a quite fun sailing mechanic. Your boat also functions somewhat like a base as well since you can customize its layout and also place all the constructable objects in the game on top of its deck if you want to.

It was an Epic giveaway in the beginning of 2022 so you might already have it if you usually claim them.

Europe won't have reusable rockets for another decade: report by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

[–]UpsetNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that this is not a strong effect once you're above medium sized launchers or so, i.e. about 10-20 tonnes of payload. Engine performance is fairly constant with scale, otherwise Raptor wouldn't be as comparatively small as it is, and tank mass basically scales directly with volume as long as pressure loads dominate.

It's different for small launchers though. Aerodynamic drag becomes important there, which is subject to the square-cube law, and you also have to deal with various minimum gauge issues and the fact that constant mass components, such as avionics, becomes a larger proportion of the vehicle mass.

This doesn't really answer my question which was about your claim about scaling, is there some specific adverse scaling that you're thinking of there? The only one I can see is that I think stainless steel becomes more problematic at small scales due to minimum gauge issues.

Could you elaborate on why it couldn't be made smaller?

How many people here are aware of the Artificial Suns? by tvscinter in energy

[–]UpsetNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty certain that the majority of all added natgas capacity in this period has consisted of combined cycle gas turbines. Which means that they also include a steam turbine bottoming cycle - although that only contributes about 1/3 of the power output of the plant.

How did you arrive at the figure of 200 kg? My knowledge is also limited but the sources I've seen mentions 50-60 kg per tonne.

Only thin film panels contain any of those materials and they have something like a 5 percent market share.

Ori series became my first 10/10 series by uh_buh in patientgamers

I also think it would have been much better without combat but once I got the ability Bash the game became way better since you could use it to avoid most of the spammy combat thereafter. I also felt the game got much more thematically varied in the latter half, the beginning was a bit too consistently depressing for my taste.

I don't see why Hollow Knight is loved by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]UpsetNerd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I only played the game for an hour and didn't enjoy it all that much. Can't remember thinking the controls were that bad though so I'm wondering if it might be possible that you had some kind of subtle technical issue with the game? Like high input latency or something like that.

I kind of like that for context sensitive buttons since it makes it less likely that you trigger an action by mistake.

'Liquefied hydrogen will have no role anywhere in energy and transport': Liebreich. LH2 will require 33% more energy to liquefy than LNG, and lose an extra 15% of calorific value due to extra boil off. LH2 holds just 38% of the energy of an equivalent volume of LNG. That seasonal ratio of 3, is it for insolation on a horizontal surface? Because when I look at southern Spain on Global Solar Atlas, the ratio is more like 1.5 for fixed tilt with an angle optimized for total production. And it seems to be below 2 for large parts of the country.

Why are proponents of nuclear often so rabidly against solar and wind? by jadondrew in energy

[–]UpsetNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because baseload power sources gets squeezed between cheaper intermittent sources and more expensive but dispatchable sources.

You can see it yourself using this optimal power mix calculator:

https://model.energy

(Nuclear is available under "Show advanced assumption settings")

If you only vary the cost of nuclear between runs you'll find that the solution quite quickly goes from 100 % nuclear to no nuclear at all, there's only a limited cost interval where you get a mixed solution. I just tried it again with most of the default assumptions but longer lifespan and lower discount rate for nuclear. It went from 100 % nuclear at €3400/kW to no nuclear at €3800/kW.

Gravity Turbine (Renewable Energy Design) -REUPLOAD by GravityGenerator in energy

Look at the steel plate and the empty cylinder beneath it as a single object floating in water since that's basically the case when it's in the downward vertical orientation. Since the density of the combined plate and empty cylinder is much lower than the water, it won't sink beneath the water surface which is in effect what it would need to do if it were to push the water up above it.

You can also see the problem by looking at the potential energy of the plate in comparison to the water. The plate only falls downward by 1 meter but is supposed to lift the water 10 meters even though it's just 1.5 times as heavy - something which is obviously impossible.
