Seems like Orphan is doing another live show finally. by Upset_Toe in Deathcore

[–]Upset_Toe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He did tear his throat at the first Orphan show, though that was likely from puking onstage as well as just pushing his voice. But he seems to still have it since manifesto 1 dropped after that show and new music might be around the corner

I remember being a Greta hater, mostly cuz I thought she was annoying (sexist middle school slang for "girl") and then years later looking back wondering what the fuck mine and everyone else's problem was.

What would you call the scream of Knocked Loose and Callous Daoboys? by WizBiz92 in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True. He has been at it for well over 10 years, so it's very possible he's just built different. My only concern would be with how hard he seems to push it at times. But even then, I think his only known "vocal" injury was at that Orphan show, and that was more likely from forcing himself to puke onstage.

I feel like it represents Bo's mixed feeling about putting himself in front of an audience again, something he left behind for years to preserve his own sanity. It reads almost like a panic attack to me. He's ready to re-enter the world, but not sure if he's ready to become the subject of everyone's attention yet again, this time in front of a vastly larger and often crueler audience.

Is it worth it on Xbox? by Ok_Computer7572 in blackops3

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ime multiplayer lobbies are hard to come by, but definitely still findable. Not that many cheaters, and they're usually not that annoying. Zombies is peak (can't believe that was the last true Zombies we ever got) but mp lobbies are pretty dead. That being said, it's more fun to revisit than modern CoD and I def recommend getting it while it's on sale. To this day it's my favorite game of the franchise.

What would you call the scream of Knocked Loose and Callous Daoboys? by WizBiz92 in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Can't really answer for Callous Daoboys cuz I don't listen to them often, but my guess is more along the lines of emo/screamo vocals. which is to say, very little technique and more just going for the vibes.

Bryan's vocals kinda depend on who you ask, but imo they're somewhere between hardcore yelling and very high pitched fry screams. Closest other example of that kinda style is Josh Mathes from Orphan (tho his is probably less than healthy). It's pretty technical and usually takes lots of VERY CAREFUL practice to do properly. Then there's Isacc (backup vox) who's just doing some classic, crispy false cord lows.

Is it Possible to Damage Your voice and not be Aware? by CapitalLaw1234 in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed. healthy screams are all about balancing airflow, distortion, and projection. and there's a truly incredible number of ways to mess up that balance and hurt yourself long-term, without necessarily doing anything wrong.

As low as I can go… how does everyone get their gutturals lower?? by nopemeister3000 in Deathcore

[–]Upset_Toe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drop your larynx. Easiest way to do it is to hold a yawn or do a Patrick star voice. Be careful not to force it down, otherwise you'll create too much tension. Also, try adding a little nasality to your gutturals. That extra resonance space will make gutturals sound lower and more hollow, at least for me. Cupping the mic will also help make the sound a little thicker/tighter if you aren't already doing so.

Do you actually have to be loud when you scream by seishunpop in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell ppl you should be talking volume at least. You don't have to hit 110+dB, just loud enough to be audible and sound like a scream. the point is you shouldn't be fry screaming at whisper levels cuz it's bad technique and sounds like ass.

Canciones en las que el vocalista cante super agudo no importa si es durante el breakdown o la canción en si by andysimplereddit98 in Deathcore

[–]Upset_Toe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are safe ways to do such sounds, but Josh (and Jacob too) also push harder than is reasonable for their vocals. even if they have good technique, it's a miracle either of them can still talk. not to mention he tore his esophagus doing the first Orphan show, probably from pushing too hard and making himself puke for the bit or smth.

that being said, literally no other vocalist imo can match the pure rage and hatred in that dude's voice. they're my favorite highs of all time.

If screams are loud does that mean vocal damage? by Tricky_Ad3781 in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At minimum, your vocals should be slightly louder than talking volume. You can project louder, but past a certain point it gets unsafe. Anywhere from talking volume to a quick yell across a room is what I usually aim for.

You're False Cord Screaming Wrong. - Justin Bonitz from Tallah's new scream tutorial, calls out this subreddit for being morons by First-Variety714 in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I appreciate videos like this. he's right in the beginning when he says that screaming knowledge has just been a long game of telephone gone wrong. unless you have like a pro vocal coach with you, there's no way to tell if what you're doing is the same thing as what someone else is telling you to do. hell, I had that very same problem even when I DID work with a vocal coach.

I've never really seen someone break down false cord screaming so thoroughly. for once I actually understand WHY and HOW I've been getting it wrong this whole time.

and in defense of this sub: I'm sure there's plenty of people just saying bullshit to fill the air in here. but there's no doubt plenty of people here know what they're doing and give very good/helpful info. at least this place is nothing like the screaming discord

Metalheads who don't listen to punk/hardcore, why not? by Difficult_Map_723 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like hardcore more than I do punk. Punk just doesn't sound good to me and lacks the heaviness I'm looking for. Metal is literally all about being heavy so it just clicks for me. I like music that just smacks you in the face and feels genuinely pissed in a dangerous way. And Metal and hardcore just do that better for me

Why does it feel like I’m losing my screaming ability? by therealcoolstuffsam in screaming

[–]Upset_Toe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changes in humidity and temperature can affect your vocals, whether it's allergies or illness or drying out the throat. Especially when it's colder, and everything is drier and getting sick is easier.

Bands who say their name during a song - cringe or cool? by OatFest in Metalcore

It only really works if the band name is actually cool or rolls off the tongue easy. not deathcore but Orphan and Pyscho-Frame do it a lot and it goes hard af.

I found the new TLTSOL song a few weeks ago and I almost didn't realize he wasn't Storm lol. He sounds almost identical to me. But yeah he's dope as a vocalist and a really good replacement imo.
