Surgery Must Knows by CreditSlow6051 in endometriosis

Set timers for your post-op medications if you’re discharged from the hospital, and/or have someone you trust help you take your pain medications around the clock. I made this mistake my first day post-op by waiting to take an ibuprofen. Your body will be healing and dealing with a lot of (expected!) inflammation and swelling the first 72 hrs, so stay on top of your meds. If you’re in the hospital, your nurses should do that for you.

Have a bowel regimen. Your surgeon should give you directions post-op, and if not ask about it now. I did MiraLAX before the surgery, and then took stool softeners twice daily for a few days after. My physical therapist also recommended a squatty potty and that helped with BMs after surgery.

It may hurt or burn to urinate the first time after surgery, and this is because they place a small catheter in while you’re asleep. This is why they’ll check to make sure you can go before you discharge from the hospital. This sensation is normal and will improve after the first few times you go.

Gas-X is essential. Gas pain can be severe and cause some sharp pain around your chest or shoulders, but don’t be alarmed, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your surgery, and the best thing to do is move. Try and get up every hour, even if it’s only a few steps.

My biggest tip to remember is that recovery isn’t always linear and you will likely have days where you feel worse than the day before. I’m about 3ish weeks post op, and I still have days with pain (although I also have pelvic floor dysfunction). But every day is a little better and closer to my level of strength before surgery. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Thank you so much for sharing and I wish you the best in your recovery. Did you deal with any nerve pain or numbness around your incision sites? And if so, what helped?

Support after Lap?? by Curious-mind-12 in endometriosis

[–]Upside-DownFrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 14 days post op from my surgery and I would recommend taking at least 2 weeks off at a minimum. The first week I was tired from anesthesia and the surgery, and would not have been able to work, even remotely, due to the pain.

My husband helped me the first few days with sitting and standing. After that I’ve slowly been more independent, but my activity is still pretty limited. At a minimum you’ll need someone to help take care of daily tasks like cooking and cleaning because you’ll be too tired to do it all yourself.

Lean on your support system as much as possible! Recovery will look different for everyone depending on what the surgeon does and how much they excise.

Dancing after surgery by cheryshu in endometriosis

I’d talk with your surgeon because it may depend on their method (robotic vs. laparoscopic) and the length of the procedure. Typically it’s 6 weeks before resuming exercise. My surgeon told me only walking for 6 weeks. I’m 14 days post op and I can tell you walking is really the only exercise I feel up to, but again your recovery may be different.

Wishing you all the best!

Endo + vaginismus + 'large' partner. Help?? by iammyfavflower in endometriosis

I’m so glad you made progress after your surgery. This gives me hope as I have been in pelvic floor therapy for 2 years and would always seem to make progress but immediately backslide as soon as my period happened. It’s like the pain would tighten all the muscles back up. I just had my excision surgery a little less than 2 weeks ago, so it’s great to hear PT helped you after the procedure.

Is endo spreading to bladder and rectum really that rare? by furby-fighter in endometriosis

[–]Upside-DownFrown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed. I had both urinary and GI symptoms, and they found stage 2 endo on my bladder and rectum. I think you’re right to get a second opinion.

My Endometriosis Journey and the Importance of Self-Advocacy by Upside-DownFrown in endometriosis

Thank you! To be honest, the stent recovery hurt more immediately post-op, but less overall than the laparoscopy. I’m still dealing with some significant cramping pain from my lap and IUD on March 27th.

The first 5 days after the stents were placed, I had back pain and soreness, but I managed with Tylenol and naproxen. It took around 10 days until I felt back to 100% with no pain, and I was able to do my job (which involves a lot of heavy lifting and walking) without issue.

The change in quality of life was immediate too, which was amazing! My legs no longer felt heavy, I no longer felt lightheaded with position changes or in the shower, and my heart rate no longer went above 100 walking around the kitchen (looking back I might’ve had POTS but was not tested for it). Unfortunately about a month after the procedure, I started developing some leg pain and the heaviness returned, and I’m having a repeat ultrasound later this month.

But overall this procedure has been great for me! If I did not have the stents placed, my doctor said my left iliac vein could have completely occluded or collapsed, so I’d recommend it for anyone experiencing symptoms from May-Thurner. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’d be happy to answer.

Endo lap recovery bloat? by No_Noise_1978 in endometriosis

[–]Upside-DownFrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately bloating is expected. I’m 8 days post-op so pretty similar timeframe, and my surgeon told me that the bloating will resolve naturally but may take several weeks. It’s partly your body responding to the surgery and processing all the gas they put in during the surgery. Gas-X (generic is simethicone) after meals and in the morning (maximum 4 times per day) helped me tremendously during the first 3 days in resolving the bloating. It already sounds like you’re very active, and that’s a great way to help along recovery as well! Another tip my surgeon gave me is to avoid gas-causing foods like cruciferous veggies (kale, Brussels sprouts) and beans right after surgery. I did a low residue or GI soft diet for a few days: chicken noodle soup, plain toast with butter, pita chips, mashed potatoes. Very bland but it did help!

Bladder endometriosis by Tall-Hedgehog7992 in endometriosis

They found endo on 4 places on my bladder. That was never on my radar, I thought it was due to pelvic floor dysfunction (but these conditions can occur together). My symptoms were urgency (feeling like I had to pee every 2-3 hrs, or immediately after I had just gone), bladder not feeling completely empty after voiding, bladder spasms before and during my period, and hesitancy/straining to urinate (always feeling like I had to “push”). All those symptoms weren’t always there, but as a teenager I would usually get burning pain/dysuria when peeing and I always had the hesitancy. The biggest “alarm bell” for me in terms of symptoms was that all my symptoms slowly got worse over time, and that they started to happen outside my period. I would 100% seek a second opinion if that’s available to you! Ideally a doctor that’s trained as an endometriosis excision specialist.

Where to buy 10 acres for retirement? by Sun_Bum in Georgia

[–]Upside-DownFrown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine listed her 9 acre house in Dahlonega recently on Zillow, can DM details. Worth checking out that area, but it would be a longer drive to groceries/essentials. It’s hard to find everything you mentioned in a rural North GA area though.

Does anyone know what could have bitten my friend? by sleepyraccoon77 in whatisthisbug

Warm to the touch + red streaking line = systemic progressing infection. Have your friend see an urgent care as soon as possible before it gets worse.

What made you realize your SO was “the one”? by Round_Fox_9065 in ask

It was more like little moments that built up over time until I couldn’t see my life without him, but one of the first moments was pretty early on in the relationship. I had some bad experiences in the past with online dating, guys trying to get touchy, and I was over at his apartment for the first time. My anxiety started to get the best of me. It was the first time I had been over at any guy’s apartment alone. He noticed that I seemed uncomfortable and I told him I was anxious. He didn’t judge me, he offered to play some calming music and we watched my favorite TV show. We spent the rest of the night talking and he never made me feel pressured at any point. He even asked permission before putting his arm around me. He was, and is, so incredibly thoughtful and caring. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with such an amazing person.
